Lewis Morris Challenge

Yeah I figured it was the old course. It's almost the reverse that you've been doing, but 5/6 of the way through you come down the steep switchbacks. There you need to bear right, go to the fire road, take a left, go downhill, left onto the start of last years course. Rooty section at the top, down that washed out section to the bridge. Don't go over the bridge, instead go right around the bottom of the hill to the s/f.

Yes this is correct and a great description. A few other changes are also in the course which makes is closer to 7.

Curious if one of the other changes is the go-around that drops you into the middle of the gravel downhill on the backside? I'm speaking in terms that only people really familiar with the park will understand of course.

i know the park real well, any one care to give a step by step trail by trail route from start to finish?

Just curious, are most people here category 1? I haven't raced before, but I registered for category 2 because at 6 miles, category 3 would have just been too short.

I'm pretty much expecting to get crushed. 😀

Rollers are waaaay more fun clockwise. Heads up for those who haven't ridden in a while...as you get to the end of the rollers (which would normally be the beginning) there's a log across the trail, which I assume will remain for the race. Not huge and easy to clear.

I heard yesterday that with the course changes, it's about seven now, and that cat 2 is now two laps rather than three.

Anyone have an updated .gpx file of the course?

A map with route highlighted wouldn't hurt

Cat2 only 2 laps - I was looking forward to hurting myself with 3...

Change class..? Buy a one day license.

Can't do a one day for Cat1, you must buy a license.

really? two laps for sport? wow. the winning time will under be 1:06:00.

The course is a bit longer than the last few yrs & a bit slower in reverse so I'm thinking it will be longer than that.

I'm probably going to do the race now that they change the course up a bit. Props to Marty's for trying to make it more interesting.

I have confirmed that the race is now 2 laps for sport and 3 for expert.

Joe,

any idea what the average lap time is on this course? I know Paul was riding it yesterday, maybe you can ask him.

I'll ask paul what his times were if he was in fact timing himself. I have never done a timed loop in this direction. My best the other way was just over 29min. So maybe a little over 30? Either way expert race would probably be 1:30-1:40 somewhere.

Norm,

You seem to know the course layout & probably rode it at some point, any thoughts?

My random thoughts, from the Over-Analyzation Department:

1. Regardless of the staging, the dump into the ST is going to hurt. Aside from the road going into the ST, you're hitting it at a hard-hard left hand turn, more than 90 degrees. Aside from that bit, the start is predominantly climbing so the hot-flashing-burnout types will be reeled back in early.

2. That steep section will suck more than you think at about mile 2.

3. Be most careful on the fast downhill around the halfway point with the excessive gravel. That's got "washout" written all over it. Note that if they cut that in half with the small diverted section it's not an issue. This is a good section to note in the pre-ride.

4. On that note - I'm trying to think of modifications to the loop that could add a mile and I really can't think of how they would do that.

5. The best part of the course to know is where it dips into the woods at about 7/8 of the way through the lap. If you pre-ride just to know this turn, it will dump you into that climb (the first climb from last year's race) with momentum. If you hit the brakes and lose momentum, it hurts. This is coming off the yellow trail, almost back to the pavilion. Bang the left off yellow. Last year you were coming up and made a right.

6. The bench cut section at the end of the loop isn't the most race friendly trail, IMO. That would be my next thing to note on a pre-ride. Get to know that trail.

7. I think I did 31 per lap last year at 4 laps, but a bit shorter course. You make the lap longer by a bit but drop a lap, I think your top guys are in that 30/31 realm. The time spreads here won't be as crazy, so Kirt I'd say to expect 35 min/lap maybe? Again, this is the old course, not a 7 mile course.

8. On the course additions. It's basically adding a slight uphill piece, which is fast, then a fire road downhill which is like 20+ mph material. It's not a lot of time to add really. The ending bit is different than last year's start (it goes along one side of the hill, last year when up the other side) is a bit of a push, time-wise.

9. The pros at 4 laps will be sub-2 hours.

10. Our society is a base-10 numbering system. Thanks! And good night!
