I think it has been long enough since Ben did this last series that we revisit these threads to give some of the newcomers a chance to get known. So...

How do you make a living, what do you do for work?

I am a project manager for a civil engineering firm for Transportation GIS projects. I specialize in knowledge of linear referenced (route and milepost, i.e. two lanes from 0-1 and three lanes from 1-2) systems and how different systems interact with each other. I am in more of a database management role that a GIS geek. I basically manage data for various agencies from the federal highway level down to municipal level for anything you see along the roadway including pavement width, number of lanes, type of pavement, type of roadway stripping (lines), location of ,manholes, inlets, pavement marker, etc..... pretty much anything out there we have close to survey grade positional information on it. I am specifically proficient in a federal highway system that determines how much funding each state receives.

Currently I do nothing, nothing at all. I am unemployed. I am still getting paid by the last company I worked for (NYSE) though, through October. I was in IT. That's a vague answer for now. I have to get back to my day job, which is doing nothing. Writing more than 6 sentences at a time is too much like work. Boy I'm pooped now.

Summer-build cabinets and furniture for an ultra high end mill shop.

Rest of the year- teach organic chemistry lab and teaching assist orgo lecture while finishing my masters degree.

I'm a sculptor of high school minds. I teach special ed geophysical science (9th grade) and AP as well as college prep environmental science (11-12th grade).

During the summer I chase 9-14 year olds on my MTB.

Prior to teaching I was a hydrogeologist at a large environmental consulting firm doing Hazmat stuff for the govt.

^what company ??

As for myself, I am a structural engineer that specializes in the design, inspection and rehabilitation of bridges (both highway and railroad). Licensed in NJ and NY I have also performed Resident Engineering services for projects under construction.. ON a related note, after 12.5 years I am leaving my current place of employment (vry short commute) and starting Monday at a new company (very long commute). Time for some new opportunities and experiences !

i'm a CPA. i don't do taxes (other than my own) and for that i use turbotax. but i stay up on tax stuff, so i can answer tax questions with better than average accuracy.

what i do do (huh huh, doodoo) is help write those financial statements that get released quarterly and annually for a pharma company. i file our press releases, 10-Qs and 10-Ks with the SEC. that info gives people the idea on whether to buy or sell our stock. i also am the liaison between all of us accountants here in accounting and IT. i'm an sys admin on one of our new accounting systems and i help get systems rules put in place to help with segregation of duties rules, or just general stuff like automating notification emails when our numbers get consolidated.

i was a music major in college, so i had a pretty different career path up to when i was about 27/28 years old. back then i played my bass and wrote some music for student films to make my money. i actually don't miss that as much as i thought i would.

i ride bikes to stay sane.

I noticed where your lunch ride started once during the winter contest, before I give up that information, do you work for FHWA 🙂

I'm a rocket scientist and brain surgeon. In my free time I own a Security company that installs Burglar & Fire alarm systems, CCTV, Access control and data wiring..
I also deal with anything that beeps in your house.. If it beeps, call me and I will tell you it's not my alarm and you need to change the battery in your smoke detector. That takes about 20 minutes per call and they still don't believe me that it's not my system beeping.

Creative Director & Designer

I love what I do, have much-many creative freedoms and work on some neat projects, however I hate sitting in a chair all day. Chair sitting sucks.

Bike crash test dummy is my part-time job. Full time is R&D director at a global consumer products company, developing new oral care products that are mostly sold outside the U.S. Will be with the same company for 30 years in January so planning to bail (retire) by mid-2016 latest. Then will be full time CTD
