Kittatinny Valley State Park Conditions

This is a major traffic problem and will 100% cause extensive delays in both directions….obviously far more heading south. There is still heavy traffic on the weekends for those heading north into Sussex County or to those spending time at Lake Hopatcong. It’s a cluster F
just before Oak Ridge Rd? Do you mean just before Berkshire Valley Rd? (Oak Ridge does not run to Ret 15)

I'm out for the time being due to an injury I had to get taken care of. If you ride here, please post locations. If there is enough damage, I'll take the driver over there once I can.

I have pretty much ridden every trail here the past couple days, past weeks storm had no effect on the park. Only tree I found was was at the start of the orange diamond blaze at the 206 parking lot. Go get some.

What’s the consensus on brushing back some of the tall grass along some of the trails? Is the Park Service receptive to it or is it a no go?

Any areas in particular you have your eyes on?

I have done this in the past as a representative of JORBA with the park manager’s blessing-
There is new management that I have not been in touch with yet.

@Stef any intel here?

There are really only a couple of sections that need it and they are largely concentrated in this section:

Can't speak on legality or permission, but I would highly recommend an articulating hedge trimmer for this type of work. Parks tend to see it as a "less dangerous" option over a string trimmer or brush cutter. Or just use a grass whip if you can find one. I'd just call the park office to mention that you want to cut back the grass that is in the trail in order to reduce tick bite chances. NJ state parks are usually very accommodating in that regard.

No trail work can be done without a permit & scheduled. Any maintenance needed has to be reported to the office. If you tell me exactly what needs to be done I will notify the park

Tall grass/weeds need to be trimmed back from either side of the trail in approximately the area circled in red in order to lessen the risk of picking up a tick.

anyone know how KVSP trails fared with the storm yesterday?
while I have not ridden up there today I live near cranberry lake so perhaps 4 miles away-ish. When the storms came through here yesterday it was meh, hard rain not wind. I don't think anything special happened in this area and I was over in tranquility cutting trees on trails in allamuchy north from past storms with no new stuff that I was seeing. obviously I could be wrong about KVSP so take it for what its worth.

Ah okay. Listening to the scanner yesterday, there were many areas of downed trees in the Blairstown to Springdale/Fredon to Lake Iliff area. Looked like a very small hail core, so very narrow path of damaging winds too. But if anyone determines that there was moderate to major damage, I’ll head on over one day.

There are a few trees down on Black trail. The worst one is blocking the entrance from the White trail near Goodale. The other two are downhill from there a bit.

So I ended up contacting the park office myself, explaining what needed to be done, and they had me fill out a volunteer form. This morning I brushed back the Andover Junction trail which was very overgrown. They were quite nice to deal with and appreciative of my interest in the Park.
