Its too cold for bike frames!

I agree, that's part of the frame and should be covered, but didn't the OP already say he's *not* the original owner? If so it clearly states he's not covered.

Thats true, im not the original owner. Actually something I looked into before I ever bought a used frame...I was told by some pretty reputable sources that the warrenty was still in effect, however a shop would not dissassemble/reassemble the bike for you if you needed the frame replaced. So since I can handle the labor, I was ok with this. However, this is not the case. Unless you are the original owner, your f'd. This IMO, is total horseshit. You buy a used car, warrenty is still in effect. I bought a used garmin...garmin still warrentied when it broke. Thats pretty lame. Guess im lucky that it was just the chain stay and not the entire frame.

I totally agree about it being part of the frame, im just passing along the bullshit that I was told.

20 or so years ago, warranties weren't always transferable on cars either....

Bum deal though Joe...

actually Tim, my 1990 mustang gt was a great example. I bought it in 1992 when I was 16. Started drag racing it and power shifting the hell out of the trans. Blew the trans, broke the locker in the rear. Went to ford (car had 6yr 60,000mile power train warrenty) and they replaced the trans and rear for free. No issue with not being the original owner.

I'd still call specialized and talk to them no matter what the warranty says. My frame was out of warranty by about a year when it snapped and I got a replacement. Sure, it was a different company, but still....they have to say all that stuff and cover their asses, but you never know what you may get until you ask.

And yes, not a suspension piece 🙂

Yup, thats what I did. I emailed them the picture as well. See what they say.

At the end of the day... a hundred bucks is not a terrible price to pay for the replacement

If they don't replace that thing for free you should drive out to specialized headquarters (wherever the hell that is) and jam the broken stay up someone's ass. Just my opinion.

Sorry to hear about your FSR link. I'm not sure if you will be interested, I use to own 07 or 08 Stumpy and I had replaced my old swingarm when I decided I sell my Stumpy. I crashed my bike and had a big dent but it was still workable. If you want I can give it to you and save yourself a $100 and try it if it will fit. The dent on the swing arm did not alter the space between the tire and swing arm. I was using it like that without a problem but I had to replace it before I sold the bike to get a decent offer on my Stumpy. Let me know.

Here's the some pictures:

Thats awesome man, thanks for the offer. Only thing though, your SJ was a 26" though correct? not a 29er? I dont think it would be the same length 🙁
Thank you very much though. DId spec. replace yours under warrenty?

Yes Joe it's a 26 and I also paid $100 for my new swing arm but because it was my fault not the same as what happened to your Stumpy, they should replaced that under warranty.

There isn't a single bike company I know of that extends warranties past the original owner. Resale does not figure into most peoples' new bike purchases in the same way it does for car purchases (since cars cost an order of magnitude more than bikes, typically), so companies don't use more comprehensive warranties as a sales tool, in the way they do for cars.

$100 out of pocket for that ain't bad...

Every chainstay I have had tried to warranty was met with the same response from Specialized's warranty dept. "Not technically covered, but we'll send you one this time." But those were all for original owners.

Some of the smaller companies have transferable warranties. I know that Turner does. In fact, I broke my chainstay in the exact same spot as Joe's, and my bike was two years out of warranty and I wasn't even the original owner. Turner sent me a new one for free. But I recognize that this business model wouldn't necessarily work for a huge company like Specialized, Giant etc.

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but how does Specialized know if you are the original owner or not? Are they asking for some kind of documentation to prove that you bought the bike? If not, then it sounds like the issue is that they don't want to cover it at all which kind of stinks.

Usually because 95% of people would be doing this through the bike shop they brought the bike from.

Hey gtluke, do you have a close up picture of the failure? It would be interesting to see if the component failed as a result of fatigue or if it was a sudden brittle failure. A fatigue failure is usually distinguished by "beach marks" emanating from a crack.
