Irene. Worst ever?

I have most of the standing water out now. Getting a 12 x 8 wool rug out of the basement that was soaked almost killed me. It's in 8 pieces now 🙁
Had to weigh 1000 lbs all together.

Broke a window trying to get it open too. Lame.
Water boil advisory here. Still trying to understand how a hurricane can contaminate city well water. Maybe it's failing tests or the clearwell got flooded. Odd.

What's keeping me sane is that at least I'm not as bad off as fft. I don't have the sea to contend with. Keep Fighting it man

Been dealing with water in the basement and no power since 2A. There is a 100' tree down across the top of our road and there is still no one close to cutting it. We finally got out and got to my BIL's place with the kids. Hopefully th water will leave our basement.

Now I feel dumb for panicking. I thought this storm was supposed to rage all day long? I was gaining an inch an hour and every single thing I own is in this basement.
I got off lucky if this is it.
I just need new rugs and furniture and hopefully my computers can be salvaged.

Power went out in Cranford at 6:30 am and came back at about 2:30 pm. In that time it was enough to flood basements that rely on sump pumps.

I was able to get my generator going just before the water crested my sump pit and my basement is dry. My neighbors weren't as quick or didn't have generators and ended up with 8" of water in there basement.

In the morning I started the extension cord brigade running power to my neighbors. Its good to know I can power 4 sump pumps...my generator kicks ass.
got power?

The end of my street is flooded, the Rahway River comes through Cranford and floods the town. Luckily I am not in the flood zone, my friend who is in the flood zone has a basement filled with water as well as water in the 1st floor of his house. He is in the picture below wading though the street with his older son heading to higher ground to pick up his car. Anyone who didn't move there car in the flood zone is fucked...unless you drive an old crappy saturn like Utah.

Ironically, the only thing that flooded at my house was the saturn. Passenger side window leaked in the downpour and there is an inch of water on the passenger side floor. Happens from time to time, just need to drill more drain holes in the floor.

I have the same one. It is a little loud but my basement and neighbor’s basements on each side of us are dry.😀

Good luck everybody.🙁

We had maybe an inch of ground water in our basement, at most. I have a pump that takes it down to 3/16", and the shop vac did the rest.

Best wishes to all of you that have had real problems from this storm.

Still no power at our crib. We're going to lose lots of stuff...and I know we're lucky. I will never be generator-less again. Ever.

Dam is it windy. I just rode my bike down town to see some local flooding. I got blown about a mile down there with almost no pedaling.😀 On the way back it was a little different. Even though it was flat it sure felt like uphill riding against the wind. I even had to fight with the bars to counter the crosswinds turning my front wheel. Spend most of the trip fearing a tree was going to fall on me.

In the meantime, we just got a call from my moms tenant. They got water in the basement. Since my mom lives next door we can asume the same. My moms 450 miles away and i cant get into that town to check. We will see tomorrow.

still no power here. only things we will lose will be food in the fridge. rumor is the power won't be on until sept 4th.

We were told the same rumor and ours just went back on about half hour ago. Since we have a well we have been without running water too....I think no toilet and shower is worse than the electricity part. Now that the sump pump is back on I wonder how long it will take to remove the 3 inches of water in the basement.

I know people involved with state OEM and that is a blanket statement they are making to everyone to cover their asses... some people will be up sooner than others but with the amount of damage spread out across the state it's gonna take a while to get to everyone so it's easier to say that than to give an actual timeline...

Water main break is fixed I think, we have brown water but almost zero pressure. Pics are circulating of a small dead whale washing up on our beach.

I'm on a slab, so I've got no basement worries. That being said, my dad installed a battery backup on our sump pump when I was a kid using a deep cycle marine battery and trickle charger.

HUGE advantage because you're at highest risk for losing power when you need the sump pump the most.

If no one is manufacturing these yet, it's a million dollar idea. I just want half.

They do sell battery back-up sump pumps that run off a marine battery and take a trickle charge. I have one and so do 2 other neighbors on my block.

The problem with these batter back ups is something usually goes wrong with the charging system. You don't use these back up pumps very often and like most homeowners you don't test them and trouble shoot periodically for problems. As a result when the power goes out once every 5 yrs your battery back up is probably not in 100% ready to go shape. Rarely have I seen anyone get 6hrs of pumping capacity out of a batter back-up.

The best way to keep a sump pump basement dry is to
-have a reliable sump pump(commercial grade)
-have a generator in the event the power goes out
-ideally have a back up electric pump or gas powered trash pump
-don't go on vacation during a power outage🙄
