Barnegat Lighthouse
It starts with a lighthouse, why a lighthouse, why not. NY has the Statue of Liberty, Ca has the Golden Gate Bridge, China has the Great Wall, Kansas has the world’s largest ball of twine. Icons like these really pull an area together. They stand the test of time, and provide inspiration for all who view them.
Worlds largest ball of twine.
Barnegat Light would still be a vacation destination even without the lighthouse but with it this area is transformed to a legit coastal community with a rich history. The lighthouse is really old I think it was built before Mitch was born. The town itself has remained less touristy, it’s the furthest point from the bridge coming onto the island, it still has remained a quite retreat for families, fisherman and those seeking solace on its water.
Saturday evening I got back from Barnegat Light after spending a week with my family, my brothers family and my mom. A week with that many family members can get interesting but the house was big enough so we all had our own space. The house was really close to the beach, I could hear the ocean at night when I went to bed and the seagulls were my alarm clock in the morning. I’m not sure what those birds are saying when they caw but like the sound of a dog barking in the distance on a quite dawn I find it peaceful. Every morning Mary I and would wake up before everyone else and kayak, go to yoga or just cruise on our bikes. By the time we returned the family was awake and just finishing breakfast.
I tried paddleboarding one morning the locals call it standup paddleboard (sup). Actually Mary and I took a yoga class in the bay on a sup. Yoga is very relaxing. Yoga on water is even more relaxinger. Yoga seems really popular now or because I practice yoga I am more aware of it? Kinda like when you’re looking to buy a new car and you notice the car you want on the road a lot.
I look like I just got layed in this pic. This was after yoga on a paddleboard. Yoga brings about a sense of calm and contentment, like someone can tell you that your house just burnt down and you be like...k.
Well anyway sup is also really popular these days too. It seems that every other year something new comes out to do on the water. Remember board sailing? Well now there is kite boarding but I digress. After renting a board and paddling around the bay I find sup to be a yet another way to enjoy being on the water. Everyone says that sup is a great core work-out, honestly I don’t give a shit about core workouts. Sup is cool because it’s easier to see fish and crabs in the water and if you gotta take a leak you are already standing.
Going native.
While sup is cool, real adventures on the water can be had with a kayak. These crafts are much more seaworthy, nimble and faster on the water. Sitting in one you create your own ballast and feel at one with the craft and water. Man tries to invent new ways to travel on water however what the Eskimos began 1000’s of years ago is tough to beat.
Yay...KAYAKS!
Coming home from a vacation is always hard. It’s like leaving your mom and going off to your first day of school. There is a comfort in vacationing. Relaxing with family, doing what you want when you want, it is so much more fun than going to work every day and trying to squeeze some fun in between. I’d rather play every day and squeeze a little work in between instead. However, once back into a routine the daily toil is not so bad. If it were all play the concept of vacation would be foreign. For now I enjoy the moment and cherish the memories.
