Let me follow up with some things that I've been working on outside if cycling. First there is that room upstairs that has been my ongoing project which I picked back up in the late fall. Thats when I did all the molding in the room. I sheet-rocked this room like 4 yrs. ago and re-did the lighting and replaced the leaking radiator. At the time I also ran cable into the room as well as cat 5 wire. Over the Christmas break I finally finished painting the room and now we have the min-iggy-man cave. This is now where the kids play their video games.

I'm not sure what that white squiggly line is next to the window, prolly a ghost in my photo machine.

Yesterday my DJ-Iggy machine arrived, this was actually ahead of schedule. Me and the kids were hootin and hollerin when this showed up. My kids were more makin fun of me, I was really psyched to get this. I started loading my music into it, its a neat machine. Getting a mix right with fading and layering songs does take time. I can see myself wasting a lot of time with this shit. It gives me more appreciation for DJ's who sample songs within a song, to get it right takes some skill.

Thanks Jimmy!

Cycling
It was a rest week this week so that means I ride my bike less. Yesterday I joined Chris G, Kirt, Woody, Sean and JKuhn at Hartshorne. I've ridden this place enough times so when I think of Hartshorne I don't get too excited. Riding Hartshorne with friends makes it way better, Chris G can make Hart & Allaire ride a lot better with his pacing and navigation. This ride put me at almost 4hrs. for the week. Tomorrow is going to be cold so I'll prolly ride the rollers or go out briefly to cap the week off with 5hrs.

Hartshorne seems to be less affected by rain then a lot of other trails. The place was dry and firm yesterday. Despite the fact that very little TM goes on at this place I'd still give it 3 out of 5 stars. Some of the trails are eroded and blown out but overall the place still has flow. With a combination of hills and flats there is just enough elevation to keep it interesting. Aside from an occasional rock outcroping the place is practically stone free(hendrix ref). The park offers downhill and cornering skills as you weave through the single track. You can put in a loop here in about and hour, if you peddle over to Huber you can add another 45 minutes. Huber is a mini Hartshorne, less miles and elevation.

Calling you out:

White Clay is a 3
Hartshorne is a 3

How does that jive? Please explain in a 500-1000 word essay. Thanks.

1=Suck
2=Fair
3=Good
4=Better
5=Best

The fact of the matter is there are a lot of good places to ride. Some are better and few are best. Most people get caught up in claiming everything is the best.

I am objective. Being located in the middle of NJ with most trails located less then an hour away I don't have a home course. So I kinda travel all over checking out trails.

White Clay is good, I'd put it in the same catagory as Hartshorne. WC is maintained better but the overall riding is the same as Hartshorne/Huber...imo.

Nobody is objective, fool. So does amount of trail have any bearing? Can you compare Clayton and Mooch North? I wound think 2 trail systems that are the same would be differentiated by the amount of trail, good or bad.

Agree that everyone says their home court is the best.

Clayton gets a fair rating, its too small to be anything else.

Mooch North- Better. Some would argue that its 5 star material based on the quality and extent of technical stuff. The one thing that most would not argue is the fact that Mooch is better than places like Hartshorne, Mahlon or Kitattiny.

I am the great oz.

OZ sorry you are not qualified to rate mooch (my bias O) on your limited access but I still love you...

What about adding + or - to your grade system ?

Yeah Mike, that is an option. It gives me a little more wiggle room when rating a place. However its more fun to tell Mayor Matty McMooch that Allamuchy is a 4.
The oz has spoken.

Lets just agree/disagree that mooch waway and ring/skyland are top 1 2 3 in which ever order you want to put them. Jungle takes 4th and everything else is mediocre at best in NJ...

Sourlands is far from mediocre if u like rocks.

2-Day It was cold out so bagged any ideas of a road ride. I know there is like this competition for riding in the cold but to be honest I want no part of that shit. More power to ya's out there in the coldest part of the day racking up hours on the bike, it ain't me. If I was on xc skis then I'd go out in 2 degrees but on the bike I am more selective. Plus I work outdoors so I get enough exposure to cold temps.

This morning I met Clapper and Kirt at Chimney Rock. We waited until 10am to go out, it was a balmy 17 degrees...still warmer then 10 degrees when I woke up. As we were riding around Clapper told me he would rate CR a 3 out of 5. I concurred. Like most trails in NJ CR is good. The controversy comes in when your rating 4's and 5's. Its easy to distinguish a 3, rating above this becomes harder to do. Breaking up is also hard to do.

Era of Good Feelings

Riding with friends is always better I say. I like the winter because I have off from work on weekends and can get together with others to ride. My training may be suffering from lack of structure right now. I have been on the road bike very little since November but screw it. I am really enjoying the mtb thing. My mtb skills are getting better and if I can prolly get into tempo shape if I get back into the roadie by mid-Feb. Thats my plan and I am gonna stick to it...I think.

Haven't heard this song in awhile. He can't sing but he's got style and can tell a story. I wonder what ever happened to Biz Markie?
Also...I don't know what the fuck this chic is singing about but she has my attention. mysterious blondie

Your mancave looks solid for a good viewing experience. Needs more sound system though.

yeah, it does need more sound. 40" tv looks good but sound is crap. I have to work on this. I need a little mini-fridge as well next to the make-out-couch.

Jimmy what are my options for better sound quality on the cheap for my tv.

People to Listen Too

Etta James was a great vocalist. Recognizable voice, great style and soul. Few people reach this iconic status. I'd put folks like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Otis Redding and Frank Sinatra in this category. I think Norah Jones and Jack Johnson could be icons as well but time will tell. If they do a tribute album to Barry Manilow it could be all over.

The Training the training the training the training

This was a good week. Had some really diverse workouts. Thats what keeps it fun.

Monday- 3hrs at CR with Clapper and Kirt. Kirt bailed at about the 2hr. mark but I dragged Clapper around with me for another hour.

Tues-30 min. rollers.

Wed
- 2hrs. tempo on road. As Norm pointed out in his thread JRA in cold weather blows, I agree with this. Typically I go out to ride after work. As I mentioned I work outdoors, so after being outside all day in the cold, it can be rough to go ride in freezing temps. I defy you to be cold on a tempo ride.
The wind really killed me on this ride. I can't seem to hit the 20mph avg. during these winter months. I blame the wind. My HR is in tempo mode but the speed is not there. Maybe I'm not in race shape...whatever. You don't know what you had until its gone.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/143524945

Thurs-30 min rollers.

Friday
- 1.5hrs at Allaire. Damn that was fun. The ground was frozen solid, I put in close to and 11mph avg without even trying.

Saturday-1.5hrs xc skiing. Yes snow is back. Mixing it up with skis and bike is awesome. XC skiing is a great load bearing exercise that works the whole body. Youcandoit!

Sunday
- heading to the Watchung Reservation for more XC ski goodness.

Not an Icon

Some people just have a way with words. ODB is one of them, I mean he just did not care. I guess that's why he died at the age of 36. He couldn't sing but I do find this song appealing...is that wrong?
