Earlier this week me, Kirt and Clapper went to Jungle. It was nice to ride there at an non race pace, the only time I ever go there is to race or pre-ride the course to race. The new trail Boon was awesome.

Friday a bunch of us went to Wayway and rode the good stuff that isn't in the race course. It really is amazing how much good shit is at the place. Me and Kirt are going to go back and put an epic 3+hr deal together in there. We just did 2hrs Friday which is nothing for us endurance guys.

Kirt, Craig, Seth, Nelson, Robson, Utah, Jeff
It was nice to get together with these guys and enjoy a non hamma pace. Nelson led the tour. Unfortunately Seth busted his new de-rail-er(im not going to google the correct spelling) and had to cut it short. Craig headed back with him. Robson was steady eddy on his niner and it was good to share some riding time with Jeff who I see all over but never get a chance to ride with. Brett found us after pickle and joined in the fun.

Last night I partied hard up at the neighbors house. They have the ultimate party house. There basement was showcased a couple years ago on the show Mancave. Needless to say we killed it on da dance flo.

Me and my main squeeze ho.

Tonight its over to my neighbor's across the street for Christmas eve dinner and then all the family over tomorrow. Life is good.

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, or good times to whatever it is you choose to celebrate. Peace out my bitch's.

Yes Iggy it was great to finally get to ride with you and some of the other race team members during the off season. Good times at Wayway.

Has Kirt been drinking iodine? His legs are a really weird color, unless that is just panty hose. Which would still be also weird.

Today

I met Kirt at his house for a road ride today. We started at 9:00, kinda late but I was at the Nets game last night with the family. They got spanked for there home opener but I didn't feel bad since I paid $5 ea. for the cheap seats on Stub Hub but we sneaked down to the lower section and sat 3 rows up from the floor behind the Nets. Jay Z is a friendly dude.

Yeah it was windy today, but conditions were not bad. We hit some good roads in Hunterdon County, Hill and Dale, Rockaway, Guinee Hollow, and we kept the pace light and bullshitted our way along. We made the obligatory stop at the Pottersville general store to grab some fresh baked goods and hot coco. It was fun going downhill towards the general store at 45 mph with the wind blowing me all over the road.

I forgot to turn my Garmin on at the start but figured we did about 62 miles in the 4 hr. range.

There are the essentials when working on the bike. Stuff like beer fridge and tunes is what I'm talking about. I've got my old boom box and CD's down stairs to entertain me while I work. The instant download is very easy and an effortless way to acquire music but alas, its soulless. There is something to be said about holding a CD in your hand.

I was around for the age of albums but I gotta say that they blow compared to CD's as far as ease of use. The artwork on album jackets was really cool but putting a needle on a record is too much work and records don't last like cd's do.

The download age just kills the idea of listening to more than 1 song from an artist. The whole concept forces musicians to come up with some flashy shit to get your attention for 5 seconds before your on to the next trendy song.

I still download music but I've become more appreciative of my cd's and my old boombox in the basement. Putting on the Stones Some Girls and listening to it from beginning to end gives off this great 1978 vibe. Or if you want to know what 1982 was like listen to Inxs Shabooh Shoobah.

I predict a download backlash within the next 5yrs, the 8 track players will be coming back.

My first physical audio was a Supertramp 8 track. I had a few others, but the only other 1 I remember was something from Zeppelin, In Through the Out Door maybe. Randomly I listened to Presence on the drive home tonight. I rarely listen to LZ anymore.

I park across the street from the Pac Center. The lot was littered with broken beer bottles this morning. When I was going home Newark was teeming with drunk white trash for the Devils game. Newark is awesome.

You want soulless? The Pottersville General store makes a digital download look like James Brown. It used to be ok but in the last few years it's gone really downhill.

The muffin I had this moring was awesome. I paid $3.33 for a fresh baked muffin and hot chocolate. Not as quaint as Coco Luxe but you have to pay double $$ for quaint. Pottersville GS serves a purpose as an active hub for folks rolling through.

You are mistaken A Very Good turntable with a close to grandy stylus has way much better sound that is lost in digital. It's funny as my oldest daughters boyfriend recently bought a turntable and has been collecting albums which are now costing more then when new. I did a clean out recently and scored him about 50 records from Patti Smyth Band to Frank Zappa and the Mothers. I miss the art work from those old albums with lyrics no less...

yeah vinyl does have a warm sound to it. but you really have to commit to the whole turntable process. ain't no way your leaving a good turntable in a work shop to get abused.

I agree about the download thing. And services like Pandora are a great convenience but def emphasize the songs that are right down the middle of the road even if by an obscure artist. However the newer service called Spodify will change that as you can select the actual album ( meaning full content of a specific cd) therefore getting to hear the cd in it's entirety the way the artist intended.

That said I will never forget getting Quadrophonia and just flipping from side 1-4 over and over on my turntable while looking at all those pics on the cover and booklet and reading the lyrics. And btw Matty is 100% right. I've done systems for people that were super esoteric and when you A/B the cd to the vinyl there is no comparison of the dynamic range and warmth. However we are talking a tuned listening room and 150k of equipment. Which yes even I think is nuts.

I have heard Matty's statement before. I don't doubt the statement, but my question is how? How is it possible that a vinyl record has better sound quality that a digital source? It seems to go against logic.

It's really several things. I personally think a lot of the root difference has to do with digital vs analog compression in relation to the limitations to a cd vs vinyl. You should google the topic and you will have enough to read for a decade

Also consider the cost though. If you put the same amount of $$ behind a digital piece of equipment would it sound better? What are master recordings made on these days? I don't know that answer.

How good did that $60 record player sound?

Most recordings these days are done on pro tools which is a digital format so editing and such in the studio allows you to manipulate the music the same way you can edit a word document (simple analogy). However there are still lots of people using 2" tape machines to record to in the studio for a more "real" sound. As a generalization I would say most pop, RB. Dance etc is done on pro tools while more "organic" music is done on 2" still. I've experienced working with both in the studio. There is nothing like the sound of 2" tape but there is also nothing like the convenience of digital formats. For example on my solo project I was able to email files to people I've worked with around the country, they play their parts and email them back with multiple takes and Ive edited what they played into what I liked most for the song. Before this technological development my dream was to outfit an RV and drive around the country and make music and have people all over play on it. Digital certainly saved my marriage. 😉

Oh a 60$ turntable with crap speakers and pre amp/ amp won't sound better than a cd with similar equipment. We're talking at least a "good" level system

Bringing this all back to iggyland all the music that he seems to make reference to and likes is from the era that 2" tape was the only thing people would ever consider recording a major album on. the only "limitation" was that you had 24 tracks to work with. ( I say limitation in " because this probably inspired and captured the best performances of our lifetimes) of course there were people who linked 2 machines to get additional tracks to work with. Consider that a drum kit alone would use 10 tracks things get eaten up quick. Also 2" machines are big heavy beasts that needed their own small room and needed to be calibrated often. Digital provides infinite amount of tracks on a hard drive.

That's interesting stuff Rob. You got to my point there at the end, which is that you can't take a $1500 record player and put it up against a $50 mp3 player with $20 headphones and say digital sucks.

Of course digital wins with ease of use but I'm surprised that some recordings are still done on tape, since cost is no (real) factor for some of these operations. Kinda neat, in a "maybe I'm really getting old" way.

People get so hung up on having the best equipment that produces the best quality. I call bs on most of it, its just a great way to market stuff. The avg. Norm is listening to music in his car with road noise and an exhaust leak on a some crappy speakers.
and thats why Walter put on weight over the holidays, all that time sitting around in his listening room playing his turntable, eating ham and drinking beer. Its been scientifically proven that turntables make you gain weight.

I just like some type of recording I can hold in my hand and put back in a case. It gives more value to the music imo. + your more likely to listen to the whole recording as opposed to 1 track. Although I always had to skip over Mother on the Synchronicity album by the Police...that song was rough.
