If you had to pix one canine to ride with...

Rescue a pit bull pup, there are hundreds out there. Super athletic super loyal dogs.

I've had my girl for 5 years and she keeps up with me on all my rides.
Plus you save a ton of money by adopting

before I got divorced..I had a lab..loved to ride with him (Bodie). Only problem was he had a good bit of hair...hard to get all the ticks off of him. He ended up coming down with Lymes deases..got him fixed..but I'd never want to put a dog throught that again. I think a short hair canine would be best for just that reason.

I agree here, pits are super athletic... The money savings doesnt just come in the adopting but in the general health of the individual dog and the breed... Some breeds are super hardy... Pits are on that list

I ride with my dog... I went thru a rescue to get her... She is a Red Heeler which like Pits are often found in rescues... Super hardy, super loyal and ridiculously athletic...

please rescue a mutt, a breed anything that may not have gotten a chance. So so many in need who are against the odds. Katie came from Tenn born and raised in a crate, via a kill shelter from Ohio again a crate, too some wonderful folks who fostered her. My and family's most loyal and devoted friend and #1 mtb partner.

katie-dog is AWESOME.

i've personally seen both sides of pits and the good side i really like. that said, i'm sorry, but i can't trust a dog that's 50%.

that said, i love my golden so my vote goes to her but for pure, multi-hour rides i'd say border collie.

I read an article on trail dogs a few years ago - I think it was in Dirtrag - where they mentioned that mutts really are the best for trail dogs because they don't have the strong specialization of some pure breeds and tend to be more loyal and obedient when running free. That is, they're more "trainable" for running along with you. I honestly have no idea if that's true or not -- never had a trail dog myself -- but it supports the notion that rescuing a mutt pays off all around.

Mutt! There are breed traits that make some dogs less reliable off leash (sighthounds for example). However I think that early and consistent training is much more of a factor in the success of having a well behaved dog off leash. Getting a young dog will help with this.

Not sure if you're a new or experienced dog owner but training will begin the moment you take your new dog home. Be prepared before hand and grab a book or two so you know where to start ASAP. My rescue is very stubborn and it's been a long road to break her of many bad habits and lack of training before we got her. I wish I had taken the time to prepare before hand and get a head start. She came knowing 2 things: pee/poop outside and sit. It's been a long road from there 😀

I'd vote golden, mine wont go more than 25 yds away and come right back. Black lab mixes are also great breeds but mine was a hyper spaz all the time. The Golden just hangs and wants love.

😡 Three rescue pits of my own. Best dogs ive ever had. One was even a bait dog found in camden. Sweetest, most lovable, and most loyal dogs bred. They'll do anything to make you happy. That 50% could be put to any breed thats not taken care of right. Not just poor badrap pitties.

I love my rescue pit! Its to bad they get a bad rap 🙁

But seriously adopt something, pit, mutt whatever...Find a dog with the right personality and you can train it to do anything regardless of breed.

Rescue - Adoption is the way to go

This board flat-out rocks. Thanks to everyone for suggesting a rescue and for adopting. I've mentioned before that my wife and I volunteer with a rescue and it's great to see this kind of support. Much love.

If the OP is interested, we can help out in any way with a new pooch. Our website is www.cominghomerescue.org and our available dogs are posted online. My wife is running today's event at Petsmart in Verona but they're probably packing up by now. Anyway.

Cheers to everyone!😀

I agree! Bless you and your wife for doing this. I heard this saying before "if you need a real friend, get a dog"

That's what I've got too - a Rhodesian mix, a pound dog. Sadly, she is too old to go far anymore, but she was a trooper in her hey-day. She did a 13 mile loop with us around the Smokey Mtn Natl Park "mountain people" houses in her earlier years. Since she is very protective, she is always leashed and she learned how to run next to the front wheel while leashed, how to stay on the same side of the tree as the bike, even jumping sideways when the bike goes through a puddle (that can surprise you!).
