Ice Ice Baby

No pun intended. Not sure what you mean.

i made a thin ice pun base on your comment about thin ice as you did not make your post a pun based on the prior posts - the slick move would have been to slide your post in without freezing out the opportunity to fish through the holes.

unless overly literal, then it is a hard, cold surface(edit) to penetrate.

A brief interlude from ice rink building.

Saturday - Day 1 of Long Island CX at Sunken Meadow State Park
Open Men, 60 min race

http://www.strava.com/activities/233528630

I spent all of my high school years running cross country races at Sunken Meadow State Park which is regularly cited as one of the toughest high school racing courses in the country. I had high expectations of the cx course utilizing most of the cross country course, but was disappointed when I arrived and saw that the whole course was laid out solely in the picnic area. I completely understand why though to eliminate conflicts with other park users and to make the race as visible as possible.

After a real quick "ready, set, go!" I failed to clip in and missed the hole shot. Halfway through the first lap the leader took off and was not seen again. He is a cat 1 cx racer and a roadie stud on LI. Anyway, I was't feeling great and ended up in 4th.

I went back to my parents house and took a shower and drank a few beers along with an awesome dinner.

Sunday - Day 2 of Long Island CX at Sunken Meadow State Park
Open Men, 60 min race

Same course, just a few minor changes, plus some rain. I nailed the hole shot today which was important bc after the start you get dumped into a series of slippery turns around trees with roots and leaves.

Eventually, the winner from yesterday passes me and I stayed with him for about 1.5 laps before he is gone. However, staying with him gave me about a 15 sec gap to the rest of the group.

So, after seeing the 9 laps to go card, I plodded on and finished in 2nd losing again to that cat 1 roadie stud. I will take it and am happy to finish my racing season.

More details of the ice rink are coming soon, but I am very worried that I have a leak in the tarp 🙁 I am hoping with the very cold weather over the next few days that the area where the leak is originating will freeze solid and I will be able to spray water on top of the ice. fingers crossed.

Thanks guys.

Back to building the sidewalls. It looks a bit rickety at this point but I used the 1' strips of plywood and held them up with the paving stones.

Then I used 1" pipe insulation to line the top of the plywood. This basically serves three purposes. These cost 80 cents per 6' section.
  1. main reason - softens the top of the wood so it doesn't rip the tarp
  2. holds the adjacent pieces of wood together
  3. provides a bit of padding

Then it was time to lay out the tarp and start filling it with water.

So far so good. I have a bit less water in it than I wanted to by this point. I developed a leak, but have not been able to determine the exact source. My evidence is water pooling up outside of the rink. I hosed in a lot of water last night and as of this morning, then ice level has not dropped at all. So I am thinking with temperatures in the teens last night, the hole may have frozen shut. fingers crossed.

I tried standing on the ice this morning, but it cracked loudly, so I still need more time to increase the thickness. With temps well below 30 degrees at least until Sunday I should be in good shape with the exception of the area where the flower beds are located. I will take some more pics today and give an update tomorrow.

Im surprised that the sides won't blow out , are the patio blocks the only thing holding the boards from failing ?

Yes. So far so good, but there is only about 6" of water in the deepest part so far. I am hoping for snow to help provide some support too. This is definitely my slight concern. I have been filling it slowly and have more stones to provide any additional support if necessary.

Thanks guys.

How high up on the playwood does the ice get? Do you have to let it get up to the pipe insulation?

Stans bro?!

Best part about those pics is that the young man was getting involved!

This seems like one of those projects where it will get better with each year you do it.

Good luck with it!

Bike Stuff - So I rode my bike today for the first time since Sunday.
http://app.strava.com/activities/235781143 I did the typical Skylands 30 mile loop. It was mega windy for the first half of the ride then it turned into a tail wind and I didn't mind it so much. What the hell is up with Strava caving in to the Everyone Needs a Trophy crowd with their KOMs based on the current year now too? I dislike, whatever.

Ice Rink Stuff -

We skated on the ice today. The ice is super smooth and crystal clear. Really cool! We got in two good skates today and are heading down to Mennen Arena soon for a high school hockey game.
