Ice Ice Baby

Now that cyclocross is starting to wind down it is time to start building up my backyard ice rink. I still have one more weekend of racing coming up with on Long Island at Sunken Meadow State Park. They will be 60 min races on Saturday and Sunday. Then the 2014 cyclocross season will officially be over for me.

I posted pics on FB but I was asked to start a thread about my off-season project. This is what I have been building so far:

Details to come soon.

awesome, this reminds me of the childrens story the value of tenacity: the story of maurice richard that chronicles maurice and his father building an outdoor ice rink when he was a child, and how those lessons carried over into his adult life and hockey career.

You should consider a white or clear liner , the thicker the better .
The blue tarp and any dark collar attracts the sun will will work against you trying to keep it frozen .
A tarp for a rink that size is usually in the $250 price range .

Yep, but the blue one was less than half of that price. It should be good enough.

I think it would be a good challenge for Luke to run refrigerated coils to the skate rink from your central air unit. This way you could skate regardless of temps.

So this is the before picture, you can sort of make out the orange flags:

I had some hard boundaries on the sides, the deck and a tree on either side. It is fairly flat with only a couple inches of slope, but I decided to go on top of the flower bed adjacent to the deck which adds a few inches too. Over all I think I will be able to get away with 10 inches of water on one side and maybe 4 inches above the flower bed. View from the other direction:

I ordered the tarp from some place online, blue was by far the cheapest and I spent a little over $110 for the 82'x25' tarp. The dimensions of the rink was planned at about 55'x21'. Here is the tarp sitting in my garage next to my son's bike:

For the sidewalls, I went back and forth for a while between 2x12's, plywood and pressure treated vs regular wood. In the end I went with about 1/2" regular plywood for about $13 a 4x8' sheet. Home Depot ripped them into 12" sheets. Here they are sitting in my vegetable garden:

For support I am using some paving stones that were ripped up from an old walkway. Here are some of them:
