Going Long and Hard.

Ps - nice job on the Seven gig; forgot to mention separately.

Also, what about plain old grease in the bb? I'm thinking Phil's or Park. The German magazine Tour gave me the idea about winterizing and they used it to seal the gaps in the seat tube a clamp.

Vreeland, its going to be too cold for a century tomorrow. Do a RV loop Monday so I can join you, prolly get some more peeps to join in Monday.

No, it's gonna be too cold for you to do a century tomorrow. I'm immune to cold so for me it's just another long day on the bike 😉

Poop and Stuff.

Friday was a recovery day. No bike. I took the opportunity to drive in early and modify the front fender for Rusty.

You can't really see what I did but it's there. I cut the front of the fender off so it's flush with the back of the brake caliper. Also custom bent and filed the bracket to tuck the fender up as high as it will go against the underside of the fork crown. It's pimp.

With the addition of the final few green bits Rusty is complete. Green Profile Slim Jim clamp, green Salsa Ti Skewers, and I chucked on some trusty Vittoria Paves. Blah-Dow!!

PS-I also stripped and painted my bench. Baller green. It's Motorex green. Everyone else in the shop did theirs as well. Shop is baller now.

First repair at new baller green bench? This ninja's PowerTap...

Yeah. The new Pro+ hub is pretty awesome. It's 50 times better than the previous gen SL+. I think I'm gonna get one, it fits my budget and style. We laced it up to a Velocity A23 so it could also be used for cross if so desired. The A23 is just a clincher version of the Major Tom. Sweet.

Saturday.

Commute. You know the drill. Always with the commute. Guys were coming in complaining about the cold all day today. I seriously rode in without booties and in fall gloves still. Really don't mind the cold at all. That or I've just lost all the feeling in my hands and feet. Either way I win I think.

Long day planned for tomorrow. 'Tis the season for the long days. Everyone bailed on me so I may try to see how quick I hit the Sandy Hook Loop. It'll just be me and my iPod. A little Suicide Silence should net me a 5 hour trip :getsome:

-Jim.

Nah, I was at work then. I'm doing the Sandy Hook ride tomorrow. I'll wave as I go by your crib at about 9am and then again at like Noon 😀

-Jim.

Reason for cutting the front fender that short? I have mine pretty short right now and it will be even shorter when I get my Sheldon nuts.

Can I ask what kind of of tension you aim for with the A23s? Just built a set for fun and don't want to smash my face into the ground. 🙂

They seem like strong rims that should take higher tension, but what do I know... 🙂

Kevin, the Force brake comes down pretty low and when I squeeze it the fender gets pushed into the tire. I cut it 1/2 way into the brake caliper.

Fred, My Disney trip took care of a good portion of my Quarq fund. I also lost about 5 days pay from doing the CX race so the rest of the Quarq fund went into the family budget. I can get a Pro+ for noodles, I have a noodles budget.

Steve, I don't know, I build 90% of my wheels by feel. Only the higher end stuff needs to be measured, something beefy like an A23 with double-butted spokes can get wound up super high.

Sunday.

Sandy Hook Century. 6-hours. I thought I was gonna slaughter this ride and come back with a sub-5 hour loop. Made it to the end of the hook in just over 2 hours. Apparently, I had a really nice tail wind, which I found out during the 4 hours it took me to get back home 🙄

I honestly don't know what to say about the cold anymore. It really doesn't bother me at all. This ride felt exactly the same as a few weeks ago when it was 40 whatever degrees. My fingers got cold during the first hour but nothing uncomfortable. My bottles froze solid so I only had 1 bottle during this ride. I tried rotating one at a time into my back pocket to melt it enough to eat the ice out of it at least. Need to work on that.

Monday.

Pugsley day at Hartshorne. As per my post in the winter base forum, I swapped these 2 rides in order to keep my points under control. People are starting to cry because I actually ride my bike, which apparently is frowned upon. Maybe if they gave those guys points for how many different fancy beers they drank that day it would even the field a bit. Or add whatever the score was from whatever sporting event they sat on the couch watching to their ride that day. I think I'd still come out on top 😉

Anyhoo. Met Mr. Saw, the G-Man, Sexy Rob, and the Sneeze. We rode around. Sneeze got a flat. We used like 20 CO2s to get his tire up to 8 PSI. We rode some more. Headed over to the Huber. Sneeze got another flat. He didn't have anymore CO2s or tubes. The rest of us rode back and I stole his car to go pick him up. That was the end of our ride. We went home. I got 3 points for today, plus the double would be 6 points. I'm just gonna keep track of my stuff here from here on out so no one's forehead vein explodes.

This is really my biggest problem this time of year. I ended up on the road bike today and it was like 10 degrees or something and it's not really as bad as I seem to remember. But the bottles freezing kinda sucks.

I have those silly bottles too. They just make it so your beverage freezes 20 minutes later. Need to look into this further. On the plus, I get to eat the icicles out of my beard as I ride so at least I get some electrolytes. And they're homemade.

It's probably got protein in it to from the bugs. Are vegetarians allowed to eat bugs?

Keeping a bottle in the back pocket works for me. I'm also keen on wearing a ss jersey as a base layer and sometimes ill throw a bottle under a layer and then its almost warm. But u may need to stop when u want to get at it.

I know your not a drinker but a few ounces of vodka or rum will go a long way in keeping your bottles from freezing. At least prolong it a bit.

gotta make sure it goes with your drink. lime drink, salt, tequila...BOOM!

😎

So yea. The bed outlet has enough juice to power the blender. Soooo, we can make fresh margaritas as we go throughout the day. Now... who is up for a margarita and mountain bike meet :getsome:
