Going Long and Hard.

Its totally stacked against you...nobody can beat you and liong straight up and your complete and total domination obviously makes people not want to play...therefore we have to change what was a base race into a game. #hollowvictories

It became more of a game last year when pat won and didn't ride for a few of the weeks. Actually it always had stuff other than others the saddle. This year it swung completely away From actually riding and focuses on where you ride.

Like Utah said, peeps like us don't need the motivation because we ride when we can, wherever we can and that happens regardless of the parameters of a game.

Well I don't know what the heck is going on.... But the recap just does not show up on Tap-$&*%. Or at least it doesn't on mine. So glad MTBNJ posted on FB, forcing me to use the browser... Presto! Recaps galore!!!! Fantastic write up... Really gives us a glimpse into the guts of the race. I gotta tell ya, following along on the live tracker, the period between miles 117-18ish to 121-122.5 I was starting to get really scared for you. I can't tell you how relieved I was come 123.5 and forward..... Congrats again!

The recap is a few pages back, but on tapatalk it's probably like 10 pages back since it only shows like 10 pages per page by default.

Need to refresh each tapatalk page where you see the missing pagers, that will fix it.

Just read this. Awesome recap, awesome race. Well done, solid performance out there. As FatMarc says, respect.

Great recap Jim! Thanks for sharing. It was REALLY great to follow along on the tracker throughout your Herculean effort. I can't even imagine how you pulled yourself to the finish in the darkest hours. #Veryinspiring

I am glad that you were not DQ'd for having frozen food/supplies at the finish.

I would imagine that one of the most difficult things, beyond having the conditioning, strength, endurance and mental fortitude, would be not overheating and sweating and chilling over the 19 hours in frigid conditions. #NZmerinowool

Were racers permitted to have supplies dropped at one or more checkpoints, so that racers would have access to extra clothing?

Aha! I was wondering where the recap was. I have some interest in bathroom remodeling, but very little in those other two things. Again, nice work Jim!

Sucks about Mark and Sveta. Seems like there should be some room for discretion, particularly in Sveta's case.

Yes. I had a drop-bag at each Checkpoint. I carried extra clothing in my rear bag just in case something happened. There was food and bottles in my bags but I just ate what was at the Checkpoints instead.

I actually thought ahead and packed extra blinky lights, another headlamp, a second 4ozs of stove fuel, and another jar of peanut butter for my calorie requirement at the last stop in Winter. I figured if I went through anything I could replenish in the last leg and still pass gear check at the finish line. It's the only Pro thing I did. I believe Mark failed check due to lights as did Sveta. I made sure my lights were fresh coming out of the last stop.

Clothing.

One of the most common questions I've been getting today is about what I wore for this. I never went into it anywhere I think so here's the list...

On top I wore the lightest Craft Sleeveless baselayer, a Craft Windstopper long-sleeve base over that, and my Gore Tool jacket.

Bottoms were Castelli NanoFleece bib tights with Specialized Deflect H20 pants over them.

Feet were 45NRTH Wolvhammers and the super tall Surly wool socks.

Hands were Specialized Radiant gloves, but, my hands seriously don't get cold so this isn't normal by any means. I also think having a bar roll on my bike shielded my hands as well. Everyone else was running Pogies.

I wore a Gore skull/ear cap.

And I also wore a fleece neck gaiter tucked into my base layer. This was a phenomenal piece as it allowed me to keep it down most of the day, stopped the cold wind from getting into my back through my jacket top, and I was able to pull it up over my nose and ears if I needed another layer. Substantially better than using a balaclava.

I have heard guys wearing Google's but can't imagine being capable to keep them from fogging up at that speed. Someone actually makes them with a built-in in automatic fan.
I am the same as you with hands I even commuted in today without gloves because well I forgot them, didn't bother me at all.

Jim, great write up and congrats on the finish! I can't imagine the dedication it took to not only get you to the race, but to persevere and push through to 5th (4th) place in your first time. Wow!

Already knew this but you must have the best circulation ever to be able to wear those gloves in the temps you rode in. You area lucky person.

I fully endorse the covering of the neck gaiter things as well.
