Going Long and Hard.

Cool, I'm not the only guy who commutes with a HR strap. I feel like a badass bunnyhopping curbs with a powertap. I will have to go through my history to find some rides when I didnt have the powertap, but I don't remember it being super accurate. I read that they use known elevation and weight for their calcs, in addition to the other important metrics. If you have your body/gear weight in wrong, that will probably throw things off.

On a side note, I saw your name on one of the leaderboards way down by me, actually more like 20 miles south, over by lakehurst air base. Was that from the longest day ride perhaps?

Had to be Longest Day way down there. The segments are weird. Some people pick crazy start/stop points. Somehow I managed to get 5 or 6 KOMs during my trip to Brew. They make it kinda fun once you find out where they are. Best of all, you don't need to hit the lap button on the Garmin when you start or stop so there's no fudge factor.

Thursday.

Commute into work after my wife got home. Legs feel terribly tired. Work be's piling up. Shop was slammin' because of the awesome weather. Finished up a project or 3. The baller bikes are coming back. This one is quasi-baller.

This guy upgraded from a Vin Deisel to an actual TT frame. He gave his Vin Deisel to EJP. EJP wants to do TTs. I laughed harder than I ever have in my entire life when he told me that. It was kinda mean, I'm a jerk sometimes. But to my defense, he asks me to give him high 5 nearly every time we see each other as his way of making fun of my gimpy shoulder. While we're on that, a reminder, my shoulder still only has about 60% mobility despite many, many hours of PT exercises and stretching.

More bike porn. No one cares about my shoulder.

Awesomest crank on the market. Well technically, 2nd awesomest. A standard GXP with a Chris King BB would be the awesomest :D

You'll have a couple more weeks of me grubbing shamelessly for cash. As a bike commuter, this is one of the few causes I can get behind and have some kind of personal attachment. I'd like to get somewhere around $500 total. So everyone reading give like $1. It'll help make our lives out there on the roads better.

That's all I have.

Small donation made Jim.

If you have a garmin you can upload the workouts from that.

What do you get with a paid membership to Strava?

I uploaded some workouts. I was hoping to see myself get some KOMs for the local hills. Then I remembered this guy Maurice rides around here.

Something to shoot for.. :)

Wednesday.

Does anyone else use Strava? If so, have you noticed they are now putting in a wattage number despite not having a power meter? I wonder if they're using the same algorithm that Cyclops uses for their PowerCal. Anyway, it seems darn close to being accurate, at least during this ride. -Jim.

Well I my Iphone came back and it seemed to have the whole ride (only lost the last 3 miles). Even though it would not wake up with about an hour and a half to go.

I did not get any power numbers though. I have been testing a Powercal and wanted to compare. The Joule did not like the rain.

What do you think of the PowerCal so far? That thing would fill in a lot of blanks if it's even close to accurate. It's one of the reasons I'm sorta holding out on buying any power products at the moment.

Friday.

First off, thanks to anyone that's donated so far, it's very appreciated!!

Day off the bike completely today. Good day for it, plus my legs just don't feel too terrific at the moment. Doing back-to-back centuries followed by a hill murder workout wasn't one of my better ideas.

Tons of cluster bombs at the shop today. We had one too many of those "problem" customers and then on top of that an order we placed didn't show up. I had to strip parts from bikes on the floor to get a couple work orders out the door. Ugh. This weather has sorta caught us off guard a bit I think.

On a good note, I laced up my murder wheel during lunch. 16 spoke radial-laced wheels take about 5 minutes to build :D

Despite wanting to go 100% murder, I actually took Ted's advice and went with normal black Sapim CX Rays and nipples. Plus after getting yelled at by my wife about painting the basement this seemed like a safer option. It's still murder, and custom. Now I need to start stock-piling parts for this build. The TT season is coming up fast. Possibly a bit too fast.

That's all I got for now.

I'm having an issue finding someone to do a vinyl for the rear wheel. The guys at Seven offered to paint the logo on, which would be sick, but it would also destroy the re-sale value.

Anyone have a suggestion on a spot that can make a 24' round vinyl of this logo?

Just the logo part, not the words. Thanks sons.

24' - are you building Stonehenge? It's the anti-Spinal Tap

.

"David St. Hubbins: I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf. Alright? That tended to understate the hugeness of the object."

Can't victory circle graphix help you

I've got a die-cut machine at home. If you supply a vector file I should be able to cut it out for you.

Inches. 24 inches!! Wait here...24". Better? I forgot about VCG. I'll ask Skunk for the artwork. If he'll give it to me I can give it to Cruiser Don :)

PS- The wind blows.

I am having beta issues preventing me from retesting and trying another test to get new settings, but with my current settings, it seems low at low efforts and about right at steady state L2 work and high above that. And really high when I am MTBing. The Joule crapped out in todays rain. It was the first ride after coming back from Powertap (it had stopped saving the rides that it showed on the screen, I may have screwed that up my self) So testing was to resume today.

Hm. Well, I still think I'd like to test one out. EP on one is cheap enough that there's really not any risk if it doesn't work out.

On that note, I secured a PowerTap wheelset in which to run some numbers to see what my fitness looks like. I'm only 82 miles away from the 1,000 miles for this month, which I could theoretically do tomorrow and then just take a week off. That'd be nice :D

Sunday.

Today was another nice long day. Did another version of the whole Round Valley and ADA loop thing. Started the ride with Jean-Louis, Joe Mundi, and Dusty Balls. Joe died in the face and Jean-Louis had to be back early so they peeled off after Round Valley. We did go a little hard during the beginning of the ride so, that happened. As a result though I took back the KOM on Round Top Road, so that also happened.

Me and Dusty hit the ADA portion after RV. The roads in that area are my favorite around, seriously, it's really nice out that way. The people that complain about the riding NJ clearly haven't done enough exploring yet.

We also hit the HackleBarney portion of my dirt road loop. The Balls wanted to do some more climbing, I'm game. Always game son. So the loop ended up like this...

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/152907911

Well, all my loops look a lot alike, but that's because I've found a lot of the cool rides and spend most of time on them instead of screwing around all the time.

100 miles in like 6 something hours, I think there was just over 7k of vertical in there.

Tomorrow we'll be out in the dirt if anyone cares to join. 50-60 miles with just under 5k of vert.

-Jim.

Wait, Dustin out lasted Mundi?

I can tell you that your power on the MTB is way WAY lower than you think. If the PowerCal is reading high on the MTB then it's not remotely close.

Having said that, it's not all about the bike. Wait, I mean power. At least on the MTB.

Yeah, by about 70 miles. Joe got popped pretty early on. Dusty seems to be getting strong. That loop is pretty hard, you know those roads out there. I'll start twisting his arm to upgrade.

Power on MTB. I don't think it means anything. It may be me but I honestly can't see how it could help, you really have no choice of when you need to go hard or not. I feel it will read either 600 watts or 100 watts. And your average will be like 200 watts. Maybe you've found otherwise because you actually have one?
