Drones overhead tonight (many)

I've listened to about 2/3 of this whole episode. If you entertain the idea that the guest is credible (which I don't have a reason to doubt at the moment), there is some interesting discussion. The episode starts with the NJ drones, so it's right there if you want to get into it, and the guest immediately debunks the lost nuke theory with some compelling arguments. One interesting point is these drone sightings have apparently been happening in early December for the last few years, but for whatever reason it really took off this year. They do eventually talk about the lack of good videos of any drones, but also acknowledge how difficult it would be to get one with your typical phone. They also tough on AI generated videos and how it's hard to trust anything you see now.

There's also a discussion of the guest's history around UAPs and the the gimbal and gofast videos, which in itself is a pretty fascinating topic. They talk about the potential for military tech that's way outside the realm of what we currently know, either by us or other countries. And of course because it's JRE the discussion eventually goes way out into left field regarding aliens and the idea that we are all going to be cyborgs some time soon, and that if aliens were here they would be cyborgs that will come to save us. But the talk does reign in (maybe?) a little bit and talks about all of the Bob Lazarre stuff and how it could be related to top secret military tech. A bunch of interesting thought experiment stuff, but of course by this point its gone way off the reservation as it relates to the purported NJ drone sightings.

One separate topic that was discussed, which I find to be way more plausible and frightening, is the fact that quantum computing is likely to render modern day encryption pretty useless. This would essentially grant control over every digital space to whomever wins that race. Maybe there's a big caveat that was missed in the discussion, but thinking of how that would unfold is a bit unpleasant.
Clif notes version pls

@rlb

I can only imagine what the public must have thought in the 1940s.....with not only nukes being tested.....But an entire town being build...Then being incinerated by bats carrying small bombs that were dropped from planes......yes this did happen.

The amount of people that knew the crazy things going on at that time is probably pretty low. Lots of the stories came out so much later.

Quantum computers can’t scale currently so higher complexity computations aren’t realistic.

For now.
Yeah for now, but the idea is that some day the technology will come around. I guess it’s a matter of how. Will it be like AI where there are a handful of competing major players all incrementally “improving” things? Or will it be one government who figures it out first and has it to use at their disposal.

@Patrick yeah the logical progression would be quantum cryptography but I think it would need to be widely available to work.

The government arrested Zimmerman when he released PGP since there was not enough computing power at the time to break the short keys.
Of course that ran on widely available hardware/OSs. I think it will happen fast once they get it sorted - just saw some advancement in quantum error correction.

the major players are the government, research, and the porn industry.... Government is funding it - definitely. I saw Independence Day, I know things.

Yeah I'm sure some people were freaked the F out, especially since there was no real information sources aside from news and radio at the time. Not that we are much better off now with facebook, reddit, etc. The internet just feels like wasted potential at this point. But anyway...

More "official" news that there have been no official sightings. Seems like he's pretty thoroughly grilled the players on the topic. Regardless, I'm still intrigued by the NJSP statements on them tracking something with the helicopter. Maybe some day we'll hear more on that.
