Dragons are F'ing Awesome

I plan to have another party after the new year and invite many of the same people, plus at least 1 more 🙂. Then you can bring me wall art and plants if you so desire.
Good, this time it won't be after I've spent four hours in the car, with a cross race squashed in between, and I'll be able to stay awake long enough to attend. 🙄

fact: you and i have worked from home on the same couch, likely with a beer next to us on the same table.

Broken Record

While things do settle down I have found myself as a bit of a broken record in terms of the bike these days. My day usually ends up going like this:

1. Wake up
2. Work right away for a few hours
3. Maybe take a break for a bit, lay on couch
4. Work more
5. Realize it's late, I still haven't posted yet
6. Work until EOD
7. Ride trainer
8. Whatever else

These things sort of go in between the cracks:

* text people
* talk to someone on the phone
* drink tea
* lay on couch

I'm at #5 right now. So I don't have the built-in bike rides there yet. And right now I'm just spinning the legs, not really doing any workouts at all. I watch TV and text while on the trainer to make the hour go by faster.

So I have no real exciting stuff to talk about in regards to riding my bike. I am riding every day, but it's not real fun & exciting, I have to admit.

Went up to Eric & Allison's for a rare weekday visit last night. Nice small group, just 6 of us. They make some good food. But serving butter for dessert is kind of strange. Still, I liked it because I'm a fan of butter. Overall the night was really nice. Need more and more of those nights going forward.

No idea what I'm doing tomorrow on the bike. I just texted Utah to see what he's up to. He's probably shocked I checked in. I'm kind of surprised I asked him what he's doing. A 3 hour ride would probably hurt a lot right now.

Comments

STB - part of me misses the early rides but part of me does not. The roads are so much more friendly at that time of day but they're also 10-20 degrees colder. So, I guess it's an adjustment. I imagine I'll be back to some early morning rides in the spring when things settle in and Life 2.0 is in full swing.

Lance - WFH is a slippery slope, because you don't put a start/end to your day and it's easier to be lazy. I end up starting work at 7:00 and then working until 6:00 some days. Granted I do stuff in between but I do stuff in between in the office anyway. I think the office gives you some limits & bounds which are necessary.

Plus once in a while I need to interact with people there. I try not to, but I do. For better or worse.

I skipped all of November. I was supposed to go in for something or other 1 day but that was still when the Path was out so I ended up bagging it.

I didn't realize that Scrubs ended up that way. That's too bad.

Walter - you know we don't text that much but you usually are good comedic relief. Maybe we should text more so I remember to invite you. Can you show up in a Pepsi truck?

Jake - Indeed, but you saying you put a beer on a table next to where you're sitting isn't exactly a rare thing, you know? Hey, maybe you could actually make the next one, and then we could sit on the couch and have a beer on it together.

And then spoon.

Capers - absolutely. Process has begun 🙂

I put the child to work washing golf balls the other day. Then we watched the Simpsons for an hour.

Simpsons are ok for 6-going-on-7 year olds, right?

Capers is on to something here. I think next party it should be mandatory to graffiti your walls. Life 2.0 should be in the title here.

Golf? Golf?!? Adding golf into my entire worldview of Norm is unfathomable. I've never met you, so that view may be somewhat...skewed. Maybe it's some heretofore unknown bad-ass golf ball launching, squirrel destroying trebuchet system you're designing. I hope.

My daughter also loves to help do almost anything. I don't know at what age that turns into lazy insolence. Hopefully 27.😀

Weekend

Did not have Julia this weekend so I had a lot of free time. I made a list of like 20 things and got to some of them, but not all of them. Does anyone else make a list of things to do and then just keep adding to the list so that by the end of it, you seem to have more to do then when you started, even if you cross off most of what you started with?

My list started with 11 things and ended with 20. 7 of them remain not done.

Random selection of things I did...

1. Trips to the house - I am still slowly bringing my load of junk from the house to the condo. In the process, I am throwing stuff out but there's almost 9 years of accumulation to sort out, and it's a lot. I made 3 trips over this weekend.

2. Clean my dining room table - the process usually goes like this. I unpack something, spread it all over the table, then clean it up. Rinse & repeat. I did this once, but the table is currently cluttered again.

3. Clean up the mountain of junk inside the doorway. Done.

4. Go buy wine. Critical! Done!

5. Go to the bank.

6. Stop by High Gear. Did this twice.

7. Pay bills. Exciting stuff right there. I still need to buy stamps though. So I have these letters sitting at my desk next to me. Oh yeah, I went into the city today. For real. First time since October.

8. Laundry. Well, almost done. All washed & dried but it's just sitting in the drier still.

9. Swing my the Horseshoe race. I did this, twice. First I went in the morning with Andy, who some of you may remember from my summer riding in the morning and on some weekends. So yeah, she's back. We did think about her racing yesterday but I wasn't really a fan of it as I thought it was a bit of a tough venue for someone who's never raced nor even ridden a cross bike. She's excited to try next year though. We left before the As then I came back myself to watch the end of the As, the Cs, and the start of the Bs.

10. Order new Road IDs. Life changes, and you know if I get run over by a car they may call the soon-to-be-ex-wife and she may scream "DNR! DNR! DNR!"

Riding Bikes

I did ride outside 2 of 3 days this weekend. Since I went Friday after work I consider it the weekend. Both Friday & Saturday were outside. I'm still defining new standard loops from the condo. By the time I rode Sunday it was raining out so I spun on the trainer for an hour.

But 2 out of 3 isn't too bad, given my recent past.

Golf

No, I don't golf. I used to hit a golf ball on a golf course many years ago. But I would not have considered myself a golfer even then. More often than not the ball went into an adjacent fairway, or an adjacent-adjacent fairway. It went a real long way though, so it was fun to watch. But hard to find.

Tonight

Heading outside again tonight after I get home. Andy and I are going to head out for a few hours to get some miles in. She's really close to that 2000 mile pie-in-the-sky goal we set back in the summer. She's undoubtedly going to hit it, but her feet may be cold in doing so. Temps are decent today, so tonight should be good.

Just something to occupy my time in the condo when I get bored.

Please explain why you have a bail of golf balls then. If you had them at the house and they made the cut while moving stuff to the condo, you are doing it wrong.

Yes. Please esplain the golf balls.

Last Night

Hit the road last night after work with Andy for almost 2 hours. Temps were nice but we headed out to the Gladstone area and it dipped a bit in spots, especially between the hills. In all, not bad, but my gloves were more for the 50+ temps and by the end it was about 40. No big deal really. It was warm overall which was good.

Andy now just about 29 miles from the 2000 mile goal. 1-2 more rides should get that done. Should be able to knock that out in the next week or so.

Today

I'll try to get out after work. The trainer sits here if I let the time slide, which often happens when I WFH. I think it's supposed to be warm out today? I wouldn't know, I'm WFH so I haven't left the house.

Golf Balls

Here is a story someone sent me the other day:

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnais e jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

So, I went back to the house, grabbed this bag of golf balls that I remembered I had in the basement, and I made a real-life representation of that parable.

Right now, I'm focusing on the golf balls of my life.

That's a cool story Norm.

Here's another one for you to offer yet another explanation as to why you have the golf balls in the first place (which a number of people seemed particularly keen on understanding) ...

To me, it's a good idea to always carry two sacks of something
when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, "Hey, can you
give me a hand?" You can say, "Sorry, got these sacks."
- Jack Handey

You see, those golf balls? They can be what are in your sacks ...
