Do I even like this anymore?

So I broke my ankle a few seasons ago and that led to a pretty long hiatus from biking (not due to the injury - I just didn’t get back in the saddle).

So anyway, now I’m 54, 20 pounds heavier (a considerable amount given my target weight is about 145) and in terrible shape.

I got back into riding both road and MTB this season and am wondering if I even enjoy it anymore. I’m discouraged by how slowly the fitness gains are coming and how the damn scale never seems to go down. Rides seem like chores, hills seem like suckfests instead of challenges and I’m generally just grumpy af.

Perfect example is I was pissed I couldn’t get a ride in today but I also didn’t want to ride anyway so I’m just in this grumpy “nothing is going to make me happy” vibe.

The point of this post? No idea other than I just felt like throwing my thoughts out there. And this is certainly cheaper than therapy.
Quit your day job, apply to be the lead driller on a 3 man hard rock mining night shift for a few weeks and check back with us.

^^This.
Or buy some dumbbells and sneak some quick weight training into your schedule. Put on a long Rammstein playlist for motivation.
I'm quickly closing in on 70. Strong coffee; long walks; weight training (single set/many reps); a quick simple mix of stretching, yoga, and tai chi; plus lowered expectations have kept my rides enjoyable. Good luck.

Ok I think I need an emtb to demo. Size small. Something that’s not ridiculously expensive.
If you're in Hillsborough, you're just up the road from Halter's. jdog has been on the e-bike train for longer than most and the shop has a great selection. I'm in PA but I used to work in Hillsborough and then Somerset, so I go to Halter's fairly often. My other LBS is Guy's in Feasterville, PA. They have some e-bikes and friends have had their Santa Cruz and Trek e-bikes repaired there (I gather they are one of the last legacy Trek dealers who are not a Trek-exclusive shop), but I haven't gotten the impression they are pushing them as much.

Chiming in with my 2 cents… This Summer has been getting back into having fun in the bike (52 + 30 pound’s overweight but down from 60 so making progress). Few things I haven’t seen mentioned as much- think about indoor cycling. I SPIN twice a week during the week- helps to lessen the grind on the trail. Warm up. If there is anything I loathe it is my warm up- 30 minute routine and I PROCRASTINATE doing it and I need to admit it makes a huge difference. Finally set weekly goals- I set them every week and I can count on one hand how many times I hit everything I wanted to do and I don’t sweat it in the least. It still helps me to plan.
