Chain Wax Discussion thread

Question for @jShort and @krink. I know both of you have commented in this thread. I haven't completed the waxing procedure on my SS yet.

With the muddy section coating the bikes during Saturday's race, what did you do post race to clean the waxed chains? Did you re-wax with the crock pot again or drip wax? Or did you have a back-up waxed chain ready to go on?

I lightly washed with a sponge and then hit it with the air compressor to dry it out. It had a fresh wax and it still seems good.

We got the whole Silca setup at the shop. I went to go set it up but the 100 bikes in the schedule forced it into a dark corner of the basement.

I didn’t do any chain specific maintenance. I just sprayed off the bike. It was my 4th ride on it since build. Still plenty of wax. Rode it yesterday for 2 hours. No issues at all. Still dead silent. Do have a second waxed chain ready for when it starts to squeak though.

In a somewhat relevant topic, what would you pay to have a shop wax a chain?

Assume 2 scenarios.

1) Everything is new.
2) Everything is not new. Which means pulling and degreasing entire drivetrain.

Also, make this a number so low we throw all of our stuff in the dumpster 😂

You mean what would someone in Summit pay, not here in the hood.

SILCA sells pre waxed chains. It seem like they charge 50-75ish for the prep and wax. That wouldn’t include cleaning the drivetrain. A few squirts of degreaser would take care of that though

$50 is what I feel is a good number. Seems sort of absurd to me that anyone would pay and not just make the investment but…SUMMIT.

Really? I’d guess 20% of the bikes brought in for service. Still preferable to the 3 in 1 oil people.

wd40 is actually a cleaning solvent, designed to displace water from mechanisms, when it dries it gets tacky and attracts dirt, its one of, if not THE worst thing you can use as a lubricant
