Cathedral Pines

Some guy pulled 9 laps in my Cat 2 30-39 group! 9 laps! As a mortal I dragged myself around the course for 7. A ton of fast guys out there today.

That's incorrect. Nobody did 9 laps...check out his times.

R-fizzle was running a 34/18

A great race all around. Very well run by very cool people. All the racers were very courteous, both in passing and being passed. CP will be on my must do list every year from now on.
I feel ok today but I was pretty beat up last night. My wrists and butt were not happy, not to mention with my shoulder, which met a tree head on during a momentary lapse of concentration. I had some really tough competition out there...Ben was charging hard after a bad start, and Estebon and I were wheel to wheel on the start of lap 8 untill he crashed and hurt his hand. Might very well have come down to a sprint. Psyched for the win though, I couldn't have asked for a better ending to the season. Huge thanks to Panhead for the support!

Congrats to all the participants and thanks to the organizers. This race is a nice end of the year endurance event to keep a training focus in the fall weather before some holiday downtime.
As was the case last year, perfect weather. Course was dry, very fast.
SS for me this year (34 x 19), managed 7th place with 7 laps in 6:04:51. Tough to make the podium in the open category, but a bit of satisfaction as the oldest guy in the field by 5 yrs.
I witnessed lots of displays of good sportsmanship (playing hard without being a douche-bag).
I'll pencil in this race for round three next year.

my splits...
Lap 1 10.3mph
Lap 2 10.3mph
Lap 3 10.4mph
Lap 4 10.3mph
Lap 5 9.84mph
Lap 6 10.1mph

rode with Commandostyle the entire race. we purposely went a bit slower on lap 5 in order to kick it in on lap 6. we picked it back up in lap 6 and his last lap was his fastest at 10.5 mph thus finishing 2 minutes ahead of me. I would have had done the same (oh well) if not for the cramping at the end. but my last lap wasnt too shabby and still faster than the previous one.

never had an athletic endeavor go so perfectly according to plan. perfect pace and hit my goal exactly. sorry, I am rambling but I think I am still on the post-race high 🙂

Thank you for the results pooriggy.

My splits were better than my race plan but then that's probably why I wasn't able to do the 7th lap 🙁

My splits:

Lap 1 57:45.9 11.4mph 57:45.9
Lap 2 50:37.9 11.9mph 1:48:23.8
Lap 3 51:42.9 11.6mph 2:40:06.8
Lap 4 58:10.7 10.3mph 3:38:17.5
Lap 5 57:00.8 10.5mph 4:35:18.4
Lap 6 58:12.9 10.3mph 5:33:31.4

My plan (pic below):

2nd place Cat 2 40-49

M/44 7 Laps 11.7mph 71.000 miles 6:05:38.2
Lap 1 54:39.2 12.1mph 11.000 54:39.2
Lap 2 50:29.2 11.9mph 21.000 1:45:08.4
Lap 3 58:53.1 10.2mph 31.000 2:44:01.5
Lap 4 50:51.7 11.8mph 41.000 3:34:53.3
Lap 5 51:34.9 11.6mph 51.000 4:26:28.2
Lap 6 50:11.8 12.0mph 61.000 5:16:40.1
Lap 7 48:58.1 12.3mph 71.000 6:05:38.2

The day started with me heading north to Rob's house to share the ride to LI. Got there about an hour before kick off, not really a need for a warm up.

We where like a herd of cattle at the mass start, it took me 2 laps to settle into a pace. I started too conservativley and got caught up in the herd.
At the start of lap 3 I was feeling good and definitely in a groove when I flatted. The Stan's wouldn't seal the hole so I had to put a tube in. All the people I passed went rushing by me as I fixed the flat.

Oh well...my new goal for the race was don't get lapped by the VTC crew. As I finished lap 3 I shook it off and knew that I had a shot to do well, there was over 3 hrs of racing left.

I found Capers at the start of lap 5 and we road together for most of that lap but he had to pull over and adjust his brake cable that was rubbing on his front tire.

My fastest laps where 6 & 7. At this point I stopped looking at my HR monitor and just hit the gas. If I got a glimpse of someone ahead of me it was only a matter of time before I passed them. This gave me the confidence to keep it smooth and steady.

It sucked that I flatted but after hearing about so many other guys who have flatted in a race I knew my time would come. I am just happy that it happened early in the race and was able to make a comeback.

CP is a great place to stage an endurance race, the course was not technical but not boring...it had good flow. Well run event and certainly going to be on my calendar for next year.

Goals achieved....

And then some!
A great day of riding, fun, commaradity, and personal achievement.
Plus, the only hangover is a sore heiny...

The only thing I'd do differently next year is train longer in advance, and try for a better position at the starting line.

Congratulations! Very impressive, especially lap 7. I hope you're not in Cat 2 H2H next year 😀

CP was way cool even though I was only handing off bottles and food. I looked up Jody to thank him for changing my reg with the Doner, Jody is a great guy.

Seeing everybody I know from here and watching the pain rise was fun.

Great showing by the VTC!! I set my watch by Da Prez, lap times were with in a few minutes from start to finish. Doner hammered his way through for a great win, too. EABODS was holding his own until a monster headache took him out. After last years effort, his head must have been killing for him to stop.

Coach Mattyb should be proud of Rob's result, he was hurting but not quiting.

Starting to look like a good SS class next year:getsome:

6HCP definitely met my expectations of being a good time. The venue, the course and the promoters were wicked and the event was run smoothly. Even the parking set up was brilliant. Our cars were parked along the perimeter course. This way every one could set up their own car-side pit area. Oh, and electronic scoring! Awesome!

As to be expected with 250 people going off at once, the first few miles were a complete cluster-fuck and a half. During the first mile there were 3 consecutive hills (practically the only hills on the entire course). Riders were getting hung up left and right. You can hear all the late shifting and crunching deraliurs. Some how I ended up amongst the group that had never learned to mountain bike. One guy fell on me, knocking me over. His pedal got stuck in my spokes and our bikes got tangled. I wasn't going to be dick about it though. When I pre rode the corse I did foresee this scenario happening.

The herd was moving way too slow in the beginning . There wasn't a whole lot of opportunity to pass so I held my position for a mile or two until it began breaking up. When the opportunity presented itself I began passing groups of people, like 5 or 6 riders at a time. Every so often I would jump on the back of a train and eventually pass when I felt the pace wasn't quick enough. It wasn't until the end of the first lap that I finally got through most of the riff-raff. Next year I'm starting closer to the front.

By Lap 2, I really got into a good groove. I mean, such a good groove that it was hypnotizing. It was as if my body was on autopilot, my mind was in a trance and wicked-nasty funk beats were playing in the background. Speed, finesse, rhythm, control, flow...it was perfect. I felt great and thought "I could do this all day".

Lap 3: I started experiencing lower back pain. Sucked it up, kept moving.

After grabbing feed from my pit area I saw pooriggy (Chris) ride by. I scarfed down a Bar and GU then sped over to him. We rode together and chatted for most of the 5th lap. I began having an issue with my front brake cable rubbing against my tire so I had to eventually break off and fix it. My F bombs could be heard loud and clear throughout the forrest I'm sure.

Lap 6: I was a lone wolf. Just about every one I encountered was someone I had to take out.

Lap 7: Foco caught up with me on his 8th lap. Wow! We're in the same cat (SS Open). Roger sure does have a sense of humor. He came up from behind and yelled "Hey Capers, what lap are you on? Me: " Lap 7" Roger: "Oh good, that means I don't have to chase you!" I definitely LOL'd at that one. I let him by and tried to hold on but that only lasted a few minutes and dudeman was gone.

Last few miles I redlined it, Took out another guy in my class and put the pedal to the medal all the way till to the end.

Ended up finishing 10th in the open class which I think is great considaring some of the folks I was lined up against. Kept my nutrition dialed, didn't pop, Felt strong all day and for the most part stayed pretty consistent. I was happy with my performance in the end.

I'll be back next year for sure. A super fun race to end MTB season.
