BIYF Winter 2015 discussion thread

If cycling is the new golf, why not make the rules like golf as well: Handicap system. I don't ride big hours and probably never will ride big hours and thus I have never participated in this competition.

Base a person's handicap on the # of hours/miles/(or in my case minutes) they typically ride during Winter. Par nets you zero points for the week. You could play it like a skins game where each week is a new "hole". To win you have to be consistent AND ride more.

Ok, crawling back in my hibernation cave.

thats not bad - it would have to be a calloway system tho....liking exceeding prior week bonus, or highest week by 15 minutes?

rounding - why round, it is a computer. 1:55 is 1-55/60 points. i'd even be up for adding in seconds - well, the computer would be.

minimum ride time requirement to qualify? or minimum total for the day?

i've lost my floor pump.....going to rip apart house and garage now.

I am Lee Trevino in this story.

great, that makes me john daly

I'd say no minimum ride time. If 1 minute is a point, then 2 minutes gets you 2 points.

Real rule suggestion: Strava/Garmin link required.

This is interesting. Handicap based on strava/garmin connect/other from last year?

I think you have to base it off of the persons previous 4 weeks, which strava retains. Last year's winter had horrible weather and people literally didn't ride for weeks. Also, if someone didn;t ride much last winter, they would automatically get more points.

that would be an unfortunate rule as it would disqualify those (like me) that dont use strava/garmin.

I think we can go on the honor system here. no?

regarding points, seeing comments above, IMHO it should just be cumulative minutes (eg., 89 minutes riding = 89 points, etc.)

very simple yet precise.

That's a good point. Last year was a long time ago - and the previous 4 weeks were cold/weather nasty enough to set a baseline

You'll bank a little badass. Anyone can ride when the flowers are in full bloom and it’s 70 degrees and sunny, but it takes grit to clip in when the rhododendron leaves are rolled in tight sleeves and it’s 16 degrees. That toughness doesn’t dissolve when your fingers and toes thaw. It dwells deep inside where you can dip into it when the time is right. I can’t tell you the number of times I draw from the bank of badass when I’m 40 miles into some beat down during the regular season. Remembering all the hard work I put in when the conditions were awful in the “off season” makes it easier to dig deep and persevere the rest of the year.

According to MTBNJ, you aren't tough for riding in the cold doe

team vreeland vs team liong for weekly bonus point....

or we can just bet on who goes longer......

as an aside, i think a handicap would best be done as a multiplier, rather than a handicap. not that i'm pushing for that.

I did not like teams, but if you must-😛

3 teams-

1 Jim and Liong

2 Team MTBNJ

3 The rest of us

This winter is going to be colder with more snow than last one:getsome:

See you in the woods.

Handicap would be easy, strava and garmin give you a year to date.. 1/1/14 to 12/28/14.. Take the ratio of Mileage per week of contest vrs last years YTD. Could be a competition within the competition.

We are well behind on snow already, when it coming?

JUST FOR DISCUSSION!

so a rolling handicap - like a bowling league - 90% of difference off theoretical max (everyone gets one), or 95% of attainable - which means no handicap over attainable, or 95% of average (meaning negative handicaps for those above average)

i'd also throw a small bonus for improving average

----------------------

i like the continuity idea too - a consistent effort to ride makes a better athlete (medical references not cited.) my gut says ride 4 days bonus, 6 days bonus. i know some don't like bonus, but this is valid.

still trying to get a feel for the weekly series idea - there would have to be a compelling reason for it not to be the wtg.

------------------------

as an aside, Jim has Tuscobia coming up, i'd expect a recovery period, like he falls asleep for a couple days.???? we need to get behind him on this - hopefully we can track, and he can hear our digital cow bells.
