BIYF Winter 2015 discussion thread

+2 the best year was the first no bonus no extra points just straight up riding.

I will only say that there should be something to reward consistency, so a strong points base for each time someone rides. .

I see where you are going with that😉.

This year Im shooting to beat you in time. If I keep my momentum of the last 6 months combo that with you having two extra mouths to feed, the odds are looking bright:getsome:

It was never straight up riding as the first year had all the dark, cold, commute and weather points and that year you got more points for the longer you rode. These were all designed to allow other people to contend with peeps like liong and vreeland because they easily beat everyone with hours. I have always said j can't compete in just an hours based comp because I don't ride that much, just everyday. The arguments with points for different stuff if to broaden the field to include more people, again, which seems like the point to me.

Spence, if you can't beat me this year, there are major problems.

Got it!!! I didn't think it was going to be that drastic for you.

New target for me then. Ride more than 75% of Jim Vreelands hours!!!

Well, i have been riding more than I would have expected and the last fews weeks I have avg 6 hours, but my average before that was 10-12.

Rather then set up the contest to award points for different stuff so as to compete with Vreeland and Liong why not use these guys as a bench mark.

Maybe you can't ride as much as these guys, but hey its a contest. There will be winners and losers, why add a bunch of nonsense to it.

Regardless if there is a contest or not, Vreeland and Liong will continue to ride a shit ton of hrs. If others need a contest to get out and ride over the winter then great, use these two as motivation...although I haven't heard much from Liong lately.

Also I'd like to see a hunger games on bikes, paintball guns in JH. May the odds be ever in your favor.

The only rule should be the Inverse Proportion of Wheels Rule. The fewer wheels you ride on, the more points you get. Tricycle, lose 50% of the points. Unicycle, double points. Otherwise, parts is parts.

Pat if you really want I can try to put some time into a Strava-parser.

Mebbe two divisions again (pro and sport?) to let the long riders slug it out and give everyone else a shot at winning something too?

ya, you should also make a category based on age, hair color and weight, like a under 30, under 150lbs and brown hair

Thank Norm - the way to go might be to use their interface like veloviewer???
then the form would could be "enter date/time OR strava link"
Unless really bored, hold off.

this is not a green light for hating on strava.....

veloviewer should have a little language for creating strava based competitions for closed groups....

i gotta get the unicycle fired up......wheelie time count?

The advantage with using their API is that, well, it's meant to do that. The problem is that they limit you to only being able to see/use your own stuff now, so I couldn't use a link from someone else, and get the info. At least that's how I understand it. Velo Viewer used to be such that you could drop anyone's user ID in, and see the data update. Now you gotta be you.

Screen scraping is rife with problems though, obviously.

Make it simple. Points for hours ridden regardless of how those are hours are ridden. Do we really care if someone rides 10 hours in a week or 10 hours in a single day? It's all the same. People aren't doing multi-10 hour days. MTB vs. Road is irrelevant also, it's still all hours. Guys like Kevin would take a hit because he doesn't MTB. No bonuses for anything, no extra points for anything.

^ this ^

its gotta be real riding: no trainer/spin time.

keep as simple as possible: time in the saddle, outside.

as iggy said, winners and losers. so who cares. I have no chance of winning but love these contests as they add motivation to get outside in the cold. and the time aspect drives me to stay out longer than I might otherwise (need those points!!!)

just clarify: how to round? does a 1h 55m ride count as a 2hr ride or a 1h ride? round to nearest 1/4 hour, 1/2 hour or nearest hour? or, need to be over the hour to count (e.g., 1h 55m is 1 hour, not 2h)

If cycling is the new golf, why not make the rules like golf as well: Handicap system. I don't ride big hours and probably never will ride big hours and thus I have never participated in this competition.

Base a person's handicap on the # of hours/miles/(or in my case minutes) they typically ride during Winter. Par nets you zero points for the week. You could play it like a skins game where each week is a new "hole". To win you have to be consistent AND ride more.

Ok, crawling back in my hibernation cave.

This is interesting. Handicap based on strava/garmin connect/other from last year?
