When you have that nine point two around the corner from the house... make a man spoiled. One bite everybody knows the rules.

this is combo BIYF/"Shop" talk post!

i've been concerned that the ~5 year old rear hub on my mukluk was finally going to bite the dust just in time for the year's first snow...so, last nite i swapped out the old free hub (which on the mukluk 3 hub, requires a complete dismantling of the hub - removal of axle, bearings, etc...sort of a pain in the neck)

i figured, while i was at it, i might as well swap the cassette and chain (way past their useful life). i thought i had a new chainring on hand too, but it turned out i didn't...

anyway, i did the swap, and right away, i could tell something wasn't right...clickity clack...i thought it might be new chain/old chainring mismatch

so, back to the garage, and it turns out the freehub had come totally loose, so, maybe not the chain ring? i redo that entire freehub process once more, paying special attention to really crank down the freehub and the axle locknuts, etc...back outside and...still crap shifting, still clickity clack etc...

so, back to garage again, and reinstalled old cassette and chain...and everything works fine...now just need to get a new 104BCD 30 tooth narrow wide chain ring (10 spd)! @jdog or @jimvreeland what are the chances one of you guys has one of these on hand that i could swing by and pick up?! 😀

Finally back at it. Between work and weather, it's been like 2 weeks since my last ride. Got on the road today, 1/6/22. Bike is fast, even in the work stand.

EDIT- FRAK!!!! I did a shorter than usual loop, forgot about the time!!! Oh well, it still counts towards yearly mileage, lol

Its actually a great place to ride, although its a haul for most of us. It drains like a colander, so unless its actually raining, its pretty dry. Its also an abandoned cranberry farm so there are dikes and ditches with causeway riding with some guys that do a great job of train maintenance. Check it out someti
sweet bro. Never gone there but i do know they have a heavy mx presence there.

From my place ive gone as far as whites bog which is another abandoned bog just north of BB

It was raining on and off and many of the paved roads were more treacherous / slippery than gravel.

Had my first road crash in very many years. It occurred during the first miles of my ride, but fortunately, I was going relatively slowly down the switchbacks on Drakestown Rd - right before the intersection with River Rd. The 2nd picture below is of those switchbacks on a sunny day - courtesy of google maps.

No idea how the Jersey City pic show such calm water, AM commute had a robust WNW wind working in my favor as the bayonne bridge pic shows.

Dropped some miles from Garmin after stopping in Newark in the return. Oh well. Snow tomorrow.

If anyone thinks going out low and slow is a complete mind f$&k, well i went to hs with a girl who’s parents would pack their family up and take this road (rt1) down the Florida every summer... the whole way. It was annual two week prison sentence. 🤦🏼
