Beginner Rides?

Girls have cootys! Seriously though, there will be some beginnerish rides at Cranks around the Campfire on saturday August 27 at Camp Allamuchy. Last year Muon and I led the beginners on a real epic which was long, but slow paced and avoided the trails which could throw you off the bike. Plan is to do a guided ride in the morning, probably at Stevens because the race will be going on at the Mooch. Plan for the afternoon is to follow parts of the Mooch Madness race course, avoiding the rockier sections of the course. all rides will begin and end at the BSA Camp. Picture is from last year. Come on out!

Thanks for the info Zip, I have been considering the Cranks event and was wondering about the level of riding. I'd very much like to come but I'm a little hesitant. I did the "beginnerish" ride at Stephens at Jorba fest in June. I have many things to say about that ride, ha ha! Would be cool if any leaders of any beginner rides at Cranks chat with me (seriously) to get some rider feedback (message me here). 🙂

Stumpy, It would be good to hear your feed back about other beginner rides you have been on. In a group it is tough because everyone comes in with different skills. In the long run, it is important to find people to ride with who are learning and progressing along with you. That is why being at Cranks around the campfire may be beneficial, it is a weekend where like minded people are gathering to do one thing,,,Ride! I will be a ride leader on saturday at Cranks weekend. If there is anyone who would also like to lead a ride contact dan at the ride allamuchy website. If there are more ride leaders we can have have more groups to better match skills.

Thanks Zippy, I'm definitely considering it, but like I said, hesitant to do a group ride. If I come it would just be for the day on Saturday and only if conditions are dry. I'd even be up for just meeting everyone and hanging out but it's $25. If I knew for sure there was a "beginner beginner" ride then I'd come out for sure. 🙂 I've been to 24 hrs allamuchy several times to watch and cheer friends on.

Does JORBA have written guidelines for the leaders of group rides? And if no, then why not? I'd be willing to help write them. I have a Masters in exercise physiology and I'm a published author, a rider, and trained in first aid.

Hey Zippy, I was just looking at the Cranks schedule. It says Saturday 9:30 "advanced beginner/intermediate" so I think I'm out. Doesn't look like there are any skills clinics or any beginner rides or anything else I can participate in on Saturday. So maybe I'll stay local and ride....or go dancing.

You should come any way--I'm sure you can prob find someone to go out with. Or just hang and meet some people... If I wasn't racing, I'd go out w/ you.Trying to remain on my bike for 4 hrs. will be a 1st for me, so I won't be looking to do any extra! Let me know what your schedule is like and maybe we can meet one day for a ride. I can talk to you about those JORBA rides if you'd like also. You may have been on my beginner ride 2 yrs. ago??

Thanks Pedals. Awesome that you're racing...I hope you remain on the bike for 4 hours and have a great ride!! I'll watch the weather and think about it. I can't really justify spending $25 and not even getting a skills clinic though it would be cool to meet some MTBNJ'ers. I can see me wandering around aimlessly asking, "ummm...does anyone know Pedals, or maybe Zip or Jam??" Ha ha. 🙂

I didn't ride Jorba Fest 2 years ago but I'll message you to hopefully meet up. I have a 4 day weekend coming up and then a 3 day weekend for Labor Day (woo hoo!)! I have new tires and some new gear so I'm ready to rock and roll.

@22... keep me posted on what you're doing, I'd sure like to show even if it is $25 and sketchy on Beginners. SOMEONE's got to bring beginners out if we riot...

I have a new Specialized rock hopper 29" I got in April, did Jorba also.. and haven't been out on single track since! I'm dying to and tough to find anyone to go. I am in for riding with you and exploring the different mtb trails around, only done Stephens and Allamuchy. I'm avail evenings after 6:30pm and weekends. Send me an email: whatareodds@yahoo.com so we can exchange #s. When are you going next?

@dorsey met you at JORBAfest. I lost your info and felt bad. I posted about trying 6 Mile Run, tho I recall you're a Northie like everyone else... and you're more advanced than me fo sho. but let's all stay posted...

I can take you out on a beginners ride at Deer park or Stephens. let me know when is good. Evenings 5:30 ish? I'd be happy to--let me know.

BTW---There is no $25. charge to come and hang out for the race.

OK... thanks. I'm usually free, not Tuesdays though. Friday is Beginners day at Cranks. 9am and 4pm rides. I'm jobless so I may try 9am. I did find out that a daytripper fee is only $10, not $25. Won't be there Saturday.

I did a JorbaFest Beginners ride at Stephens... I fell hard. I don't think that's beginners. I don't know Deer Park. I did Allaire once and I'd say that was easier. But there's this huge jump from "offroad" dirt/gravel paths to sudden roots, stumps, trees, rocks, etc. Is that just the way it is?

I can ride Tuesday (tomorrow) but not until 6:45ish..
I'm down w/ Deer Park / Stephens... I can also show some newbs around no problem.

Jess, I was thinking the pink loop at Stephens would be a good start.--Or DP park in 2nd lot and start at yellow. This week isn't good for me, but next week is. We'll figure something out.

@deF .. I remember when I was starting out riding true singletrack 5 years back. I was 33, and all of my previous riding had been on pavement. There were lots of crashes, scrapes, bumps and bruises, 2 ER visits (nothing major in the end), crying, and swearing I would never ride trails again....yet riding again anyway. There wasn't any place that I felt was "easy" because of the NE roots and rocks they have everywhere. But I just put on pads and rode anyway, at my own pace (slow!), walking up/down stuff where I felt uncomfortable, follwing the lines of people who took the time to show me the "proper" way to get over/through the technical stuff, and yes, crashing (still do!). With practice, I built up my stamina and my confidence over the years and now the rocky rooty stuff is fun!! Stick with it, and take people up on offers to take it slow and show you around. I would offer to take you, but I don't know the NJ trails well at all and have a tendency to get very lost.
Good Luck!

@Pedals I could try the Stephens pink loop if you would show it. I'm unavailable Tue/Wed nights next wk (30/31). Would M/Th/F work?

Pedals, if this works for you, I can do Thursday or Friday too - I think the pink trail at Stephens or even a loop at DP would be perfect! That is where I really learned to ride (thanks to Pedals!).
