Ask an automobile mechanic.

I'd be pretty pissed to be honest if my handbuilt in Germany engine by a specialist engine builder had a defect and a dealership tech has to tear it apart on the floor to rebuild it.

It should definitely be a swap. Also just seems inefficient and expensive to have a dealership tech open it up, then have bring in higher ups to review what the engine issues were, etc as opposed to sending it back into the factory for teardown and inspection. And then used as a core for warranty rebuilds.
Mercedes engines use 229.5, 229.52(replaces 229.51), and now 229.71 viscosity, so make sure if you don't want your Mercedes to be serviced by a dealer you purchase the right oil for your year and model.

The process of the investigation, removed the head today and all is OK, tomorrow I'll be separating the engine from the Integrated Starter Alternator which is in between the engine and transmission and I'll be inspecting the bearings *NOTE: this don't ever happen and the oil got sent to a laboratory to see if it's the proper oil since the car has 13k miles and never got an oil change at a dealership. Any body shop knowledge? Someone hit my truck while it was parked. They'd like to keep insurance out of it. I'm undecided. Just trying to get a guesstimate of the damage.

did it catch the door too? hard to tell from the pic.
Exactly. Yes, hit the door too, but you really can't tell unless you're looking for it. If I were paying, I'd leave the door alone.

My only concern with leaving insurance out of this is the inconvenience factor. Insurance will get me a rental while the car is in for repair.

There's your answer then. Unless this guy is a friend of yours why even worry about helping him avoid the insurance claim?

Silver paint will require a blend into the door to look right. I'd say $1200-$1500 easily. And check with the body shop; it may end up on CarFax anyway and if so, might as well go through insurance unless you have a high deductible. Some insurance companies will waive the deductible for a hit-and-run, too.

EDIT: Door too? $1500-$2000.

What happens if it had the wrong oil? Warranty voided and the customer foots the bill?

That will be in between the customer and MBUSA, once a case is open service department and technician gets paid. There are many legal procedures that MBUSA have, due to the fact that this vehicle is around $115k, probably the manufacturer goodwill certain cost of the repair and parts. Lower model vehicles we never send oil samples to be analyse, In fact is a rare procedure. And yesterday I just started to dig in deeper

Yes, a small scratch on the door and the wheel too. Not too worried about fixing the wheel, but I wouldn't mind being paid for it.

Out of curiosity, what's the sae range of the required oil? My motor takes a ridiculous 5W-50 full synth

0-40 with different viscosities, 2019 and older 229.5, 2006 diesels up to 2012 229.51, diesels from 2012 to present 229.52, gas engines from 2019 to present 229.52, and a new gas engine that just came out takes 229.71 I believe it may be 0-20 I may be wrong

Did you get a police report though? In case they get cold feet when they see the bill?

Everything seems to be 0-20 these days, why is that? Is it an emissions thing, are they building engines to tighter tolerances, or have the additives in the oil gotten that good that there is less shear even at lower viscosiities? Also, what do the intake valves look like on that tear down, curious to see what the carbon buildup looks like on the MB DI motors.
