A Runners Thread..... :-)

I used the mcmillian calculator today and my 29:15 5m race time should be good for a 17:40 5K and 2:52 marathon! of course it's not that simple, as i haven't done a run longer than 13 miles in 4 months, so i probably wouldn't fare that well in the full, but I'm till psyched that my race time translates so favorably into other distances. Shame my 10-mile race was so damn hilly. a very positive end to my first year back running in 15 years.

already signed up for the NJ marathon again in may where i hope to go sub 3 (and qualify for boston '11), and I hope to get some bike riding in next year. i miss some of my riding peeps and early mornings at waway and ringwood!

i was at ringwood yesterday bro, just watching with the big man. looked for you, shoulda called i know.
5K this saturday against a good buddy and equal match. gonna be interesting, it might be the 2 of us going in the for the win (and he might decimate me for 14th place, but heh, you never know).

The good luck ran out and I ran like garbage today. 8:20 5K on a not-difficult course is almost a half minute slower than last weekend for no good reason. Guy ahead of me was 54 years old. Ugh. One more race this year in Norwood 10/24 so I better show up strong or it's going to be a long winter.

I finished a 5K last year with a 65 year old man one step ahead of me at the finish line.

I was slow at that race but seeing him that fast gave me some hope and inspiration for when I'm in my 60s.

Btw, if anyone is interested I posted that I have a Nike + iPod pedometer in the classifieds with the tuneband shoelace adapter to use it in other shoes.

I ran a 5k in Hoboken on Sat and also got passed by some old guy near the finish. I hope I'm still cruising like that when I'm older. I actually ran faster then I ever have and managed to shave off a full min from my last 5k.

BTW that should have been 18:20 5K.

I ran 17:44 the previous week. 10/24 at Norwood is supposed to be super fast so I'm gunning for under 17:30.

Has anyone here tried the Nike+ tracking thing?

I just started to run again after 4+ years of nothing but riding.😀 Went out and got me some new Nike shoes. Super comfy. And so much liter than my old pair. Any advice for getting back into shape?

Several months of 30 miles per week will get anyone in shape. Set a time or distance goal of some kind to works towards. Good luck!

I've avoided this thread for months as I'm no longer a runner of any sort. Years of shift work and a few injuries just beat it out of me. Back in the army I'd do the 2 mile PT test in nine minutes and change. I did a few marathon distance runs, but no formaly recognized marathons.

Fast forward twenty pounds and ten years... I still have to run a couple of times a year for my job but what used to feel like liberation now feels like punishment. This past weekend someone I know ran NY in 3:01.50 and he's over 55! I went straight out and ran five miles last night when I heard about it. My legs are still screaming "WTF?!" but I reckon I'm back the game. I went so far as to buy a pair of flash new brooks today; shoes more in tune with my current build than the wafer thin New Balances left over from my lightweight army days 😉

Pray for my achilles!

start off slow to avoid injury man. i've had three minor injuries this year (my first back to running in 14 years) and lots of stretching along with only slight (5 miles per week) increases in mileage has kept me healthy and running. start off at 20 miles a week and stay there for a month to get the kinks out. remember to stretch. good luck!

My shin muscles are killing me on every run so far. The pain goes away after about 15 minutes but it hurts again the next day. I am trying to stretch it more so we will see.

A few months ago I switched my running shoes to the Nike Free. My quads would be tight after a 5 mile run and my left achillies would hurt. Since I switched to the frees my pain has gone away. My legs feel stronger too. I'm completely sold on the barefoot style of running. For people with lots of aches and pains when they run I would recommend finding a shoe that mimics barefoot running. I know nike makes them and I think vibram has some sort of sock but I don't think that is for running.

I'd like to start running since I'm finding less time to be able to get out on my bike during the week. Anyone know of a good, informative running shop in Central Jersey that will help me find the right shoe? I have an old pair of Saucony Progrids but I think they are the wrong size... 😱

Yeah it's hard when your body remembers what it was like to go fast. I ran two days in a row, got up and rode at Allaire this morning and as I sit at my desk I feel like a 90 year old man! I plan on taking the running very easy. A couple of days a week to supplement my overall fitness, rather than an end in and of itself. The enthusiasm of that first evening has given way to reality and I'm just happy to finally be lacing my running shoes back on after all these years.

look for a road runner sports or another shop that videos you running on a treadmill. makes a huge difference in them putting you in the right shoe. i'm small and light but still require a stability shoe because of how i overpronate (roll my feet inward). but as goldsoundz said, a bigger more cushioned shoe isn't necessarily a better one for you. i'm much happier and faster (and injury-free) training in my asics DS-Trainers, which are a 10-oz performance trainer, than my 2140s (12oz trainer) or an even bulkier Kayano (13oz gel-packed monsters). i feel the ground more and initially a less-cushioned shoe takes some getting used to, but for me there's no question the super bulky trainers are a law of diminishing returns and may even cause more injuries than they prevent (as the barefoot running ethos claims).

and shoes change so much, those old sauconies might be completely different now and might not work for you as well as they used to. shoes are so much lighter and comfortable now, be open to all brands.

Try to get to a roadrunnersports or anything of the like. They will put you in the right shoe if you're not sure what to get. It's worth paying retail to find out the first time. I never did because I know I'm flat footed so I stick with the motion control stuff.
