6 Mile Run Conditions

Fatbikeable!

Left canal almost to Blackwell's. Off the bike 4x just to finish uphills

Went from 27 to the canal and back via red and blue this am. Conditions started deteriorating quickly in direct sun by the time I left mid-morning.

27 lot was nearly empty when I started out. I guess 20 degree temps are not for everyone... or they're smart enough to stay home when it's this cold.

Earlier on, some small patches of solid ice on red but otherwise completely rideable. Lots of frozen solid ruts and still firm trail conditions at 9ish.

Higher water levels and icy mud at the concrete bridge.

I saw this unleashed guy wandering on red near the long boardwalk on red. Assumed he belonged to hikers but they never showed. Lost dog?

Blue was a different story. Expected it to be a quagmire near the steel bridge but it was surprisingly good.

Going deeper toward the canal side there were two big patches of ice and more thawing mud. Wiped out trying to cross the icy part below on two wheels.

The "Gogo Bridge" is still out.

While it was still in the mid-20s by 10ish, any trail exposed to sun was starting to thaw. I originally wanted to do white and orange but instead made a bee line via red straight back to my car before things got worse.

But first I had to cross this little creek on red near the Jacques parking lot. Looked sketchy so I hoofed it across. Did not want to write another check my skills cannot cash.

Bridge on red near the intersection with blue was restored. I'm sure it's old news to 6 mile regulars but was a nice surprise for me.

So, overall rideable but get in and get out before the sun has a chance to melt trail surrfaces back to mud.

Blue was a different story. Expected it to be a quagmire near the steel bridge but it was surprisingly good. Concrete-like mud and ice-free.

So, overall rideable but get in and get out before 10.

Did you see Warren and me out there (two old guys, I was rolling the fat bike) ??
Never sure who is going by.

We were still good at 11:00 with just some knob marks in the sunniest spots.
Hitting the last section before the 27 lot after the pipeline was a mess.

Must have missed you or it did not register in my noggin. Did you notice how many times I admit to wiping out in my trail reports? Sometimes I hit my head. LOL

I did see a group of 5 or 6 looking through the under brush for a lost garmin. If you are reading this, why do you need gps at 6 Mile? You can't get lost, it's basically a lollipop. Kidding aside hope you guys found your equipment.

That was Ray Z (i think he is on here) and group if they were on bikes. There was also a hiking group.

One other thing - @w_b and I stopped to clear a snapped tree top blocking blue.
Also threw a few other branches off the trail.

There is quite a bit of work that could be handled with loppers and a hand saw if anyone wants to go at it.

Can you give me some spots? I’m literally in ignore mode when riding now. I figure spring is the time to get all of this.

there are grape vines, and branches hanging, or sticking out all over.
Blue between the first boardwalk (head high trunk) through blackwells water crossing has a bunch.

guess we should break it into sections.

Was there today hiking on the Canal Side with my pooch and I can mirror the comments @CNJRider. Was still sub 30* but the sunny spots got slick quick. Additionally near the metal bridge a drainage line formed and created a gap like 18” or so. We can most likely put some pipe in and backfill it. @Patrick and @w_b were on the move.

I unfortunately think I lost my pocket knife during the hike. Problem is I don’t know where on Blue/Red. It’s got some sentimental value and hoping someone might see it. If not I guess I know we’ll be hiking it again.

Hopefully my light picks up a shimmer. I’ll keep an eye out.
