6 Mile Run Conditions

I saw one individual with no helmet....
I stopped counting at 6.
One was a fella (dad?) with a boy who couldnt have been more than 10 or so, both no helmets. As I rode by I said, very sweetly, "what, no helmets?" and he STERNLY said "NO HELMETS"

as Hubby says, "you cant fix stupid"

These are the people who will get this park closed down.

When they crush their skulls in a crash someone will sue on their behalf. They might not want to sure, but it won't be their choice. Their family will sue.

It is just a matter of time till someone is hurt badly. A helmet is so simple and more than ever, comfortable.

I encourage everyone to stop and teach these fools the way.

I bit my tongue this weekend, but in retrospect wish I didn't. To stereotype, I see two different groups of people not wearing helmets. One group knows their way around a bike a bit and probably think they are too awesome to need a helmet, the other looks hopelessly lost like they wandered off the canal path and didn't realize what they were getting into. I saw a lot more of the second kind this weekend.

Honestly I don't get not wearing a helmet period. Has stopped me from getting at least one nasty head injury.

I know. Thats why it pisses me off so bad.
I usually say something to everyone. But sometimes they are not receptive or just keep going. When this fella said "No Helmets" the way he did, I knew it was a waste of time. So as I rode away I said "what if a squirrel jumps through your kids spokes"
Then there were 2 fellas riding that HUGE log, no helmets. There was a girl with them, watching, SHE had on a helmet. Barry says "notice the chick was the only one smart enough to wear a helmet"

Then he came up with an idea. For someone (like a shop...hint)to buy some basic helmets, hopefully at a nice discount. Those of us that care will contribute to the purchase of them, then we make a flier explaining why a helmet should be worn and attached would be a coupon to get the helmet at that shop at a discount or free.

Just an idea.

There are quite a few free helmet programs. At least 50% of the kids in my neighborhood dont wear helmets.

Our kids generation is the first generation where helmets were pushed hard, so you can understand the resistance as 99% of people who have ridden bikes in their youth never wore a helmet and survived. Hell, they did make helmets mandatory for the pro's until the middle 90's. Being that they look dumb doesn't help. Let's be honest, they look dumb.

Most of these on-the-trail confrontations are not going to be received well and passive aggressive stuff while riding away doesn't help. "Grab a helmet next time" is about all you can say.

Sadly I have to agree that most people are going to take it pretty poorly. Considering a bike helmet costs a fraction of what a cheap bike costs, I don't think that's going to be the answer either. Some large signs by the entrances might change the minds of a few people, but I think most people who ride without a helmet really believe they don't need one. I never really thought helmets looked dumb, but I have to concede that they're not the most aesthetically pleasing head wear out there.

this topic comes up every year, at least 3-4 times in the summer. nothing more than trying to explain why they should wear them (i dont care about you, i care about these trails) is all you can do. odds are it falls on deaf ears. where is the next rutted trail thread?

I've seen guys riding with helmets attached to their camelbacks. When asked why not just wear it, the answer is always...it's hot.

hard to recognize them with helmets on. marketing doesn't like that.

remember when football players started taking their helmets off after making a big play, so they could become recognizable.
nfl shut that down -

some of the snowboarders leave them on for the interview - hell, they even leave on their goggles....

----

anyway, some signage might help - like 'not wearing your helmet waives your rights to injury lawsuits' -
but then someone will say, they didn't enforce their rule, and that makes it worse......again, the bridge o'er the raging river conundrum....

It is a culture thing. Skater's would not come if they had to wear helmets.

This guy, Mike Aitken, smashed his melon in 2008/2009 and was in really bad shape. They had all these helmet benefits for him where the only one wearing a helmet was him.

All this helmet talk recently, and I have decided to never let it go by again. Going to use my big obnoxious mouth productively. Now, whenever I see it in any park, anywhere, I will engage in discussion. We should have helmet patrol t-shirts and a big inflatable mallet to bop these tools on the head with, hand em a card stating helmets are mandatory on the trails in this park (this meaning all) and an attempt at reasoning.

who's with me? 😎

Printing a few of these to carry with me. Should be a good exercise in social futility.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Experienced riders know that
accidents can happen and take
the care to always wear a helmet.

Helmets are inexpensive, comfortable
and will prevent you from serious injury
or death.
