24-25 Ski and Snowboard Thread

So in my time living in park city, I never heard of an inbounds avalanche.... However, my God it seemed like every week someone died in the "backcountry" like just outside of the ski resort boundary, or when the mountain was closed... My dad's buried at that cemetery on the hill in pc and he's surrounded by victims of avalanche accidents..... Way too many stories of expert backcountry people dying... Enough that I always respected the ropes in the bowls. Our high school science teacher was a ski patroller at park city... She was so awesome... She would have Saturday avalanche classes for us at the top of jupiter... She had some crazy stories.
Just to clear up my previous post, I would not cut ropes on those upper sections of PC. Only saying if I was out there during strike week and noticed a lot of lower terrain closed with good coverage then I'd might poke around for an entrance into it (which I'm sure frustrated skiers were doing).

And that sounds like a really cool science teacher!

We had the same experience at Stratton in December. Limited terrain open, ice everywhere, and people out of control. We did 2 hours and called it. I’ve rarely had a great experience at that hill.
The last fun days I had there were in the late 80's/early 90's.

You need to hit Stratton when it has a decent base and then new snow. You can say that about pretty much all the east coast mountains, but it really rings true there. The glades off the gondola don't seem to need as much snow as the steeper glades as you go north in VT. If west pilot is open, you know the conditions are decent.

I've had some of my best days in the last decade in Vermont at Stratton, usually in March. It's also a mid-week mountain for sure, it doesn't space the people out like Killington can. To be sure, it can also suck.

ya I dont mind that on a day when the snow is great...ill take an hour at MRG and getting some good runs in...vs an hour and skiing anything at killington for example.
100% is better to wait in an MRG line than a Killington line. But killington does have great hidden spots that do not ever have lift lines, even midday on a saturday. I will continue to gatekeep these lifts despite them being listed on the trail map. All of this to say, though, that MRG has the best terrain in the east coast.

Its really absurd when you consider the amount of different skills it takes to become a ski patroller....I used to think....oh I can do this as a side job one day since im a good skiier.....wait I have to scale 50ft high lift towers? Become an EMT? Become an avalanche expert? Deal with idiots all day...in the case of tri state area mountains....drunken shit heads? Ya no thanks.....They are INSANELY underpaid.
I was at Bald Face a bunch of years ago. Conditions stunk with a big rain event the week before we got there. But our cat was from the east coast and the guides knew the terrain well enough that with some exploring and hiking we had some fun runs. Everything was fine for the 4 day trip except for the last day last run down to the download point. One of the people in the group (John) hit a tree and broke his leg. The guides' changed from a "laid back having fun" vibe to instant militaristic like engagement. They had John stabilized, strapped in a sled, down hill and in a helicopter to the local hospital in what seemd like minutes. John ended up in and out of the hospital so fast that he made our flight out that afternoon with his new cast and crutches.

I'm sure PC patrollers are in that same category and will also engage quickly and efficiently when needed. Not to mention the knowledge base of the mountain over the years. Most of the people that ride those lifts wouldn't touch that job and responsibility for under $100/hr.

You bring up a good point about working for the free season pass. Back when season passes could be in the $2000 range people didn't mind being underpaid. Now, if the pass is $600 it's not as big of a perk as it used to be.
Very good point. I feel like the sweet spot at Stowe (our "local" mtn since the 90s') was when the season passes were $2k a person (right before Epic). For a family of 5 that wasn't able to go every weekend, I don't think I ever actually bought a season pass. But there were discounts on day tickets using AmEx, or just going half day or specials if you searched.

It might just be nostalgia but it seemed like the mountain ran better overall. Your point makes me think that there were better qualified/better people working at the mtn as it was a bigger perk back then.

She was awesome, wish I could remember her first name...

OK UPDATE....so as I was about to respond to Don....I thought about it for a second....What was her name???? When this happens I usually text my old buddy Nick who I went to school with in Park City....Nick moved to Park City in 1980 and knew everyone in the town....So im like who was our awesome science teacher who was a ski patroller and took us up to jupiter and used to teach us avalanche safety, etc.....So he's like oh ya...Mrs Preston. Im like YES!!! Then he hits me with....Did you remember that she was one of the finalists for the teacher in space program? And I did not remember this....He was like yes, she was good friends with Christa McAuliffe and had a picture of them together on her desk. I did not at all remember this....but I didnt have her as a teacher until 1989, few years after the Challenger....he had her all thruout school...during the time she was also doing the teacher in space program.

how about that shit? As I said to @Norm ....if she got thru to ME, one of the WORST students ever who HATED school...she must have been an amazing teacher...and she was.

Apparently there is a group of people still maintaining what’s left of the old Snow Bowl ski area across the road from Mahlon Dickerson. Who knew?

We were told it's a bit of a fight club thing. Pretty sure the county isn't super happy with it being used but they don't stop you either.

It's relatively wide so it doesn't get tracked out super fast. The winter of 20/21 was amazing up there...almost a month of powder dumping every week.

That's a wild story! Wish there was a way to "repay" great teachers (also coaches, ski guides, and patrollers lol) later in life when you realize how impactful they were.

A big "hell yeah" out to Mrs Preston! 🙌

Hit pico today. It was suprisingly meh. I figured with all the snow and cold temps it would be nice packed powder. It was only like that on the green trails. The rest were hard, icy or cookie-laden. Going to sugarbush Monday. Hoping for better.

Gore today. The wind from the past two days beat the piss outta the mountain. A lot of wind scoured bare spots and boiler plate ice. Upper peak had some wind coverage on Hawkeye and chatimac but everyone found that out and it got scraped by 12:30 ish.

Sugarbush was great....Killington yesterday, not so much. Crowds werent bad, but typical killington wind storm and ice.

I was rather annoyed on saturday at Sugarbush....and its pretty commonplace now.....The lift line will be a complete shit show because there will be nobody there organizing the lines and getting people into groups...so the line clogs up and goes twice as slow as it would if every chair was properly loaded.....However, they will pay someone to stand there and look at a tablet checking everyones face to make sure nobody is swapping passes, etc.....Just one of many examples of how its all about the money and fuck the user experience...but I realize im pretty much telling you that the sky is blue 🙂

Drives me f'ing nuts when there are empty chairs when there is a line. From my past experience, Sugarbush typically has people working the lines on the weekends.

Gore is my home mountain and it's been real rough. We need a 2 footer in a bad way.
