24-25 Ski and Snowboard Thread

Enjoyed sugarbush the past two days. A surprising 2” of snow on Friday while at Lincoln. They fixed castle rock lift unfortunately as I was looking to enjoy the hike instead.

Saturday at Mt Ellen. Did 4 runs and ended up slipping on ice and banging my head. I didn’t want to even try after.

So I hit camelback with the family yesterday... Not that I enjoy this very much, but there is always work to do... My son is doing well and can get down most things, but his technique needs plenty of work yet..... Same with my wife... Whose skiing soooo much better than last year, but, still needs alot of work...

But, for a Saturday, not complaining, skied from 930 to 115 and got in 19 runs

Took the kids to Blue Mtn yesterday. Got a late start after church and thought it would be a total crap show. Quite the opposite. It wasn't overly crowded and the season pass access to the VIP lanes is awesome. Never waited more than a couple of minutes for the lift. Kids and I were happy playing on the side hits and introduced my son to the bumps in the trees. The little section of "glades" off the top of lazy mile gave my kids and me lots of entertainment. Will be back again next weekend and there may be some natural snow coming too...

Got to ski with 2 of the 3 kiddos last weekend in Stowe which was a treat as they are all off to work and college now.

Conditions were very decent and the crowds weren't too bad considering it was MLK weekend (although we skipped Saturday).

Coop - side hit

Coop doing a drop in one of the woods. I was a little nervous as the landing was on the flat side but he was confident and then rode away from it well. All the leg work he has been doing in college for football has made him strong and nimble.

I've been skiing this section of woods since the 90's. Still fun but definitely tricky with variable snow and the steeper drop in.

i think i'm going to try skiing this week 😬 I've had a used set for a couple years sitting
Boarding is fun for groom and jumps/features but I feel like skiing will open open more backcountry woods stuff that sucks on a board. Or I just suck.

And we had an EPIC Vail Fail Experience:

I got the kids each a 3 day Epic Pass for Christmas. My wife and I skied the Thursday and Friday before MLK. The lines were short and we were getting scanned every time up the lift. My wife was using her phone with the Epic app which they are now promoting but I had my plastic pass as I keep Bluetooth off on my phone.

Skiing Sunday was fine but going thru the lift line on Monday (MLK) my youngest has an issue and the liftie says he used up all 3 of his days already and can't go up. I talk to the help desk lady over the phone in the lift line and explain he couldn't have used them up as he was still in Maine the days she said he skied. She also said she had no record of my wife skiing those days.

We go down to the base lodge and speak to her in person. We finally figure out that I had a pass for him from 3 years ago in my thigh pocket in my pants (which never seemed to be an issue if it's been there for 3 years).

The help desk lady told me multiple times the Epic Vail system is fool proof and has checks and balances. But she also said that on busy days that there can be confusion at the chair lifts.

After a long while of heated dialogue she finally put back the 2 days of skiing on his pass.

- The Epic App doesn't pick up all the time and will grab a nearby pass even if it's 3 years old
- The lifties got mixed up between a 19 yo boy and a 50 yo mom on more than 2 days of skiing over different parts of the mtn.
- The pay for parking at the mountain is also utter BS. I can understand Sat and Sundays. But my wife came to meet me at 1pm Friday with no lines and the lots full. Yup $30 for an hour of parking (past 2pm is free). With the mdern technology it should be based on volume.
- The Buddy Pass they promote for pass holders is also a ripoff. Even with the Buddy Pass Coop's friend had to pay $230 for a full day ticket.

I haven't skied in more than a few decades but feel like I would want to be on skies on steep groomed and variable condition trails and some traverses into the woods (especially heal edge). But once in the woods or steep slopes with good grip the board is amazing.

I still have a bit of PTSD from my boarding days. Fell on a flatter section of woods at Steamboat. Quite the adventure trying to get up and out of there. Not sure skis and poles would have been much better since finding bottom was tough.

Anyone with experience with Indypass? With young ones these smaller mountains (shawnee, big bear, bear creek) are totally okay with me. And two mountains near my besties place in MA. Which every year he asks to go the Jay peak too. Getting in line with the commoners every time you show up at a mtn to redeem tix sounds like the only con.

When we went to blue to tube. There was a mix of passes etc. Yearly youth pass was coming up canceled. We spent more time with guest services than tubing. They reset our cards and gave is anonymous/no name guest passes and started the 2 hrs fresh.

The worst by far is if you fall on a flat section (like you said) but even last week I had to un-buckle my back foot during a traverse and I kept post hole-ing until I grabbed a nearby tree branch for some assistance.

wow, JFC....how do they enforce this? I mean camelback charges $45 to park....but not like I actually pay them...what are they going to do? take me camelback jail? lol.

And it all just another example of how its all about the $$$ and fuck the user experience. Sucks.
It wasn't overly crowded and the season pass access to the VIP lanes is awesome.
so this works for ikon passes also...at least at camelback....it was great, I was hot lapping the line.....the line that they were not organizing, so it was a giant clusterfuck.

Hey, looking for recs for the Catskills. Since we have little kids my wife and I have had limited time to ski, used to weekend at Stowe all the time before kids. Any recs for preferences for Catskills resorts? Looking to day trip on a week day (don’t mind the driving at all). Can ski/ride all groomed terrain and venture into the woods if the coverage is good and not skiied off.

I guess it’s between: Hunter, Bellayre, Plattekill, Windham if there are any solid for sure go tos or definitely avoids. Or is it worth the extra 1.5 hrs for southern Vermont (have ridden a bunch there as well)? Also any good food places to stop before leaving or en route from any of those to grab a dinner before booking home?

No season pass this year, but cost isn’t the biggest concern for a single mid week day. Prioritizing fun with the wife. Thanks in advance!

Plattekill if it's Fri, Sat or Sun AND there is fresh snow. Closed weekdays. Belleayre, otherwise. Both have trees, Plattekill has the steeps. Hunter and Windham, have the crowds.

The main issue formIndy Pass is it's two days at each mountain. Not bad if you're just going to hit a bunch of different mountains. Problem is if you like someplace and want to return, the pass is useless.

My 7yo has a 1/2 day from school on Wednesday so i started looking around the local mtns to see if i could get him a private lesson that afternoon. Everything at the times i need to get back in time to pick up little bro from daycare are already sold out so SOL for us but here's my summary of pricing:

(This is without equipment rental bc we have gear)
Campgaw 1hr private lesson + pass: $160
Mt Peter 1hr private lesson + pass: $189
Mtn Creek 2hr private lesson includes pass: $399!
Big Snow 2hr private lesson includes pass: $309

.This is nuts! I'll probably just have to suck it up and do weekend group lessons for him - then i could expand my research into PA.
