I wouldn't go there for free....if it was the last ski hill on earth, I would sooner move to florida and take up golf. What do people think of creek these days?
I like Mt. Peter better than Campgow for newbs. Avoid Creek at all cost. What do people think of creek these days?
Boy hasn’t tried boarding yet but will probably try campgow with him on bunny hill.
Was at Blue on Sunday but for tubing. Wasn’t crowded. Maybe it was the weather also scared people away. Road conditions were okay for 4WD pickup. Blue mountain road was closed and got stuck behind plows in NJ on way home. Took 3hrs vs 1.5.

Check out Bear Creek or Shawn weeknight or Sunday. Not sure what they will get you for pass, lesson and/or rental but a smaller area will give you everything you need. What do people think of creek these days?

If you can get the passes on sale its hard to beat the price to go to big snow at the American dream mall. 6 2 hour passes for 100 bucks or 3 2 hour passes with gear for 100 bucks. I think it's really the perfect place to learn to ski or ride. It worked like a charm for my 5 and 8 year old this year 6 times there over the course of a year and they absolutely crushed it at blue last week when I took them for the first time outside.I've never heard of Mt Peter! Looks like the best price for lessons. I wasn't going to do lessons but not bad price.
But $40 at Campgow on our own and 4 hrs is plenty too.
Edit: Ah you know what! The mild hills at Colonia Park - Somerset NJ is perfect and free!
I'd do lessons for a first timer unless you really know how to teach. Kids also tend to listen to others better than dad.I've never heard of Mt Peter! Looks like the best price for lessons. I wasn't going to do lessons but not bad price.

its a good spot for beginners, better than campgaw IMO.I've never heard of Mt Peter! Looks like the best price for lessons. I wasn't going to do lessons but not bad price.
Shawnee isnt terrible for beginners, the terrain is good, the crowds can get a little crazy....id recommend week nights if you can swing it.I'm just jumping back into skiing after a long time off, went to Killington a couple weeks ago and got bit by the bug. My kids (11 & 7) want to start too. I'm thinking maybe Shawnee for lessons for them. That Campgaw place seems convenient. Anyway looking forward to getting back to some of the PA/NY spots. This season is off to a promising start with the weather. Might even go to Creek next week
I hear Creek and think shitty snow with dozens of 13-17 year olds who have zero lift line etiquette.Creek is still the worst mountain I have ever skied in my 46 years doing this sport, id go anywhere else.
Hey, I was one of those. 50 kids on a bus from Queens, what could go wrong? Haven't been back since they took down the tennis bubble lodge.I hear Creek and think shitty snow with dozens of 13-17 year olds who have zero lift line etiquette.

Holiday weekends there are insane we made ghat miatake once but we usually go Sundays at opening and its not bad the top is definitely on the steeper side for a true beginnerWas just at Big Snow for the first time on MLK Monday. It's pretty convenient and nice not to have to deal with weather. "Snow" is surprisingly soft. Seems like it may be a good place to learn on a weeknight or other off-peak times. Lines weren't too bad but the "first time on snow" crowd there is insane. No one there seems to ever have been skiing/boarding before, but that didn't stop them from going up the chairlift to the top for a full Blue run! Some scary dangerous situations i witnessed, and no ski patrol or line mgmt. Other than that, there were some logistics that could be improved: Locker area is way too tight and crowded. They rent jackets (which seems strange when we live in a place with a real winter) but they are mostly red with the Big Snow logo on it so it looks like everyone works there (very confusing). The magic carpet doesn't have enough grip/they don't clean the snow off of it so people kept sliding backwards into each other. Carpet/lifts stopped so often with all the newbs falling getting on/off. The beginner area is like a wide luge run (aka funnel of doom) with a couple turns - we quickly took my son off of that over the wide open slope on the other side for better learning. He did ok on the gradual slope but 1 run from the top didn't go so well. He can't pizza hard/well enough to truly slow down and i'm a snowboarder so don't really know what to tell him. Tried to get him to turn perpendicular to the hill instead to slow down, but he couldn't do that too well either. Gotta get him some real lessons.
