2023 garden thread

Gone for 4 days. Made sure there were no zuchs or summer squash even near ready before I left. Not too bad. Two of the yellows got big but everything else is reasonable.

Also, tomatoes and cucumbers (mostly Picolinos).

Plums are solid this year despite having a case of black knot fungus which will need invasive treatment this winter. Still lots of pears, but the wasps are starting the damage them. Anyone have luck controlling wasps from sucking out the bottoms?

I have two pears, a peach tree, and a few apple trees that were established by the previous owner. I trimmed the trees up last summer to try and reduce the over growth. I get a few decent ones but most fall victim to bugs. I need to learn more about tending to these bad boys to yield a better crop.

It is quite a bit of work to get really good fruit. Sticky traps, spraying a couple times, thinning. Anti deer strategies..
We just cut the bad parts off, and freeze the rest for pies/cobbler, or make apple sauce.
Randomly we'll get some good ones to just eat.
Also keeping the water spouts cut down, and winter trimming.....
but it is rewarding when it works, so.......

Yet more stuff. Was turning the acorn squash to check for bright orange color and the stem broke off (oops). Anyway, color is right, rind is hard, and it's been more than 55 days since the fruit set, so definitely ripe. The spaghetti and acorn squash are baking in the oven now.

Beans and cherry matoes are my staple, my asparagus long beans didn't work out this year for some reason. Likely due to the gazillion beetles having orgies in my garden or the lantern flies. Also ten more squashes like this one and bigger since no one wanted more wasp sings from a few weeks ago.1000004370.jpg
