Bummer Jim, sounds like you ran into a string of bad luck at Stratton. Hopefully you can get back up there before the snow melts and redeam yourself.
When old people retire they go somewhere warm, like Florida or AZ. I want to go to Vermont, or at least upstate NY. To me this is the best of both worlds, it means great skiing in the winter and equally awesome cycling in the other months. I'm trying to sell my wife on this idea, while she likes VT I'm not sure she would want to live there year round. I still have close to 20yrs before I can retire, putting kids through college blows. Whatever, I am enjoying these cold snowy winters a lot.
Prospect Mtn is 7 miles from Bennington, its southern VT but despite this it still gets a lot of snow in winter. What I love about this place is that its an old downhill place that was converted into a XC ski center. The old lodge has a wood burning stove and fireplace to add charm. Its filled with locals, avid skiers from out of town, old hippies and families whose kids race XC. A hamburger costs $5.00 and the owner doesn't care if folks crack their own beers in the lodge. I call this real VT.
Saturday was really good skiing with fast conditions. I cracked the 8mph avg for 20 milles. This is the equivalent of the 20mph avg on a road bike, I can't prove this scientifically, its more based on feel. I wasn't wearing a HR monitor but It felt like my HR avg. was in tempo. Sunday I skied with Lars,(someone I met at a Marty's ride a year ago). I'll just say that when your name is Lars...your a really good skier. I ran into him last year at Prospect, he recognized my Mtbnj jersey. Wearing a cycling jersey in this place gets some attention, a lot of the locals are cyclists. Lars gave me some skate skiing tips which helped improve my glide. Even thought I was a little tired from the efforts of the day before I was still able to ski close to an 8mph avg. One of these years I'd like to compete in a XC ski race.

Sunday was not too cold, 18 degrees and snowing lightly. This feels warm considering the weather we've been having. Mary decided to rent snow shoes and trek around while I skied. Now she wants to get snow shoes. I don't know much about snowshoeing. What are good ones? What kind of shoes do you wear when you snowshoe? I'd like for her to get into it, this way she'll have something to do in VT when we retire.
The happy couple
