2013/2014 XC Ski Thread

Decided last minute to do a Triple Park yesterday. 26r shows up w/ his dog and I ask him if he realizes we have to walk some road sections and that the loop takes 6hrs. Turns out he's totally unprepared for the task so we stay in the Mooch. Climbing was tough and descents were terrifying. Maybe he'll post stats. Maybe next week i can find some skiers w/ some yarbles....

Today is my birthday, it took me two tries to type birhtday. I've been drinking Ommegang Abbey Ale, tasty. So let me tell you about my weekend adventure to VT. Since i've been drinking at least now i have an excuse for mispelled words and grammer errors.

Saturday morning me and Mary headed up to VT, Bennington actually. On the way up we stopped at Browns Brewery in Troy. They are a sponsor for Battenkill, I've had there beer before and when its your bday wknd you call the shots.
This was a great place to stop for lunch. Oatmeal Stout on tap for $3.75 a pint and the food is good( I had the Oatmeal stout and browns ale). I highly recommend this place, if your on your way to VT or Bkill stop in...its on the way.

We stayed in Bennington at the Best Western, $100 a night with breakfast and a clean room, good deal. We checked in then headed to Manchester to walk around and check out the outlets...the kinda shit you gotta do to keep the wife happy. It was not real cold so this was enjoyable to walk around from store to store. We got hot chocolate at one point so that was fun, then we got Thai food. Not bad for Vermont, food is never incredible in this state...your better off sticking to a burger or cold sandwich.

After drinking too much beer that night I got up in the middle of the night to take a leak and get a drink of water. In the bathroom was a cup with water in it, so I drank it. Turns out those where Mary's contacts in saline solution...the good thing is I only drank one of them.

Real VT...bonerbonerboner.

The next morning we went to Prospect Mountain to XC ski. This place was only 7 miles from Bennington and I've always heard that this is an awesome place to xc ski. Let me start out my saying that this place lives up to its reputation. Prospect Mountain is an old dowhilll ski mountain dating back to 1935, it went exclusively xc in 1991. This place has a nice mix, punchy uphills, twisty's, wide open downhill to tuck without fear, 20 minute climbs...By far this was the best place I've ever skied.(High Point,Minnewaska, Mohonk, Grafton, Mt. Snow) As I passed other skate skiers on the trails we just gave a nod with an ear to ear grin...the conditions where that good. Such a different feeling then passing a roadie on the bike. Looking at my Garmin proves my love for this place, highest HR on Skis, fastest avg...it there was a fun meter it would be off the charts. Yes I'm going back at some point this season, this is real xc skiing.

Beauty and the Nordic Iggy

I did give Mary an hour lesson on xc ski's while at Prospect. She has gone xc skiing before but being outdoors in 10 degrees is not really her thing. I must say she was better at dowhills then Soundz. After an hour she was shot and let me race around skating for 2hrs. Afterward we stopped at Man Of Kent on the way home. This is another must stop-in when going to or from VT. Great beers on tap and the food is good. I had the Browns porter and Fullers ESB on tap. Its funny how I can remeber what I drank but I can never remember what I ate.

Its my bday and I'll XC Ski if I want to.

Today I was supposed to downhill ski at MT Creek but they didn't get any new snow and my buddy told me it was real windy up there. We postponed the skiing for later in the week when its warmer and sunny. I went into work and was happy to see 2-3" of fresh snow. This was just enough snow to skate on, although I did find grass underneath on occasion that seemed to pull the rug out from under me. I found some good holes with a snow pack base so I didn't bottom out. This was no Prospect Mountain but any day you can skate ski on your birthday is a good day.

There is a sound that fresh snow makes when sking on it...as a xc skier this is one of the best sounds you can hear. You can hear my phone going off towards the end, listen for the cricket sounds.

Anyone have a trail report for Wangchung? do they still have snow, ice, slush, pixie sticks?

Warmer temps today let me lay down my first set of tracks. First lap was tough but after the tracks were set, next laps were much easier of course. Even had my first couple falls today as I was getting up some speed. Looks like I may only have a couple days left at Liberty. That snowstorm dud on Monday was a bummer.

Liberty State Park Nordic Center is closed for the season unless we got another storm. Had my last learning session there tonight after work. Bare spots galore and it was like skiing on a snowcone. I'm heading up to Windham tomorrow to do some snowboarding. It should still be winter up there.

End of a good day

Spring Skiing.
Despite the warmer weather and no recent snow falls there is still plenty of white stuff out there to enjoy on skis. The hard crusty, icy pack has gotten softer recently, which makes for good skiing(if you time it right). I took a road trip on Saturday to skate ski Minnewaska in New Paltz. With a 1’ base there should be good coverage for another 2wks. I was the 2nd car in the lot at 9:15, with a temperature of 40 degrees. When I left at 12:30 the lot was full and cars were circling looking for a parking spot.

The recent grooming at Minnewaska set the trails up nicely for skating. The snow was a little soft and old, nothing beats fresh snow & grooming…but pretty damn good for March. I focused on my technique and paced myself to put in a 3hr.effort at tempo pace. Doing so resulted in my fastest avg. pace at Minnewaska and the most mileage on skis to date(7.1mph avg./20miles). If Battenkill was a skate ski race, I'd say I'm ready for a top 10 finish. Its more likely I'll finish with the last 10 this year on the bike.http://connect.garmin.com/activity/457333542

The end of winter and melting of snow is always bittersweet for me. As much as I like riding my bike and the relaxed feeling that warmer weather brings saying goodbye to winter means no more xc skiing. This winter has helped solidify my love for skate skiing. What I enjoy in this technique is the speed, rhythm and full body workout I get when skating. There is an art to it I enjoy, there is a beauty to it I can't describe.

Jim are you going to this? I would like to replace my touring skis I broke. I have to take my son to soccer in LI tomorrow and can't make it.

I believe they have the same skis I broke in there rental fleet, it they are selling them I'd be interested in buying. PM me if your going, ideally someone could pick them up for me.
Thanks

think they would have anything with a metal edge?

I would guess that they don't have skis with metal edges because they aren't needed on groomed trails, and these are their rental skis.

Jim let me know if your going to HP.

I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. I was hoping to possibly ride Round Valley depending on what my friend who lives near there tells me about trail conditions. I'll let you know if I decide to go to High Point instead.

I'm probably going to grab a set of whatever they have, being able to get the right size used boots/bindings/polls at least and if I need to I can replace the skis with something mountain biker approved.

NNN and BC NNN are non-mixable. You will be stuck with crap til you rebuy everything:popcorn:Except poles................

I'll probably be fine with standard NNN, I'm not Brett but I'd like a ski that can at least turn in some snow better than my 40 year old 3 pin all wood skis with leather shoes 🙂

you got to get the step turn thingy down. lean back on those heels pivot and step. It's subtle but gets the job done...

You may be able to mount NNN to an edged ski since its smaller but not sure. You will have to step turn cause they won't turn for shit in the normal fashion. Tryin to keep you guys from wasting time and money sure is hard. Whatev:hmmm:
