Generic Pro Road Cycling Thread

Well this was obvious based on the 2020 TdF route.

I keep waiting for him to retire early. He looked tired this season. He is beyond financially stable and has very few goals left to accomplish in cycling.

Lowest number of sprint stages in years AND they’re in the mountains on day two? My bet is Giro then the Olympics.

But you're classifying him as a sprinter and he's not a true sprinter. He's never been a guy that wins on the SPRINT stages. He wins on the hard days, when none of the SPRINTERS can hang around. That's actually how he's won his green jerseys. He collects all the points on the days when the sprinters can't... and he's fortunate enough that he's still fast enough to be close on the sprint days so he's moping up points for 3rd or 4th or 5th or sometimes 2nd. I'm not sure about Olympics... the course reviews Ive seen have said it will be a climber's course, so i can't see him giving up a chance to further his legacy to race something that isn't at all suited to him. I think he missed a solid chance at Olympics Gold in Rio... If GVA was there at the end, Sagan could have been there easily, but he was rolling around on the mountain bike... don't get me wrong, He did pretty well before the punctures and i think he would have had a decent result, but I don't think he would have been around for the win.

I do agree with Jmann above though... the only thing that makes me question it at all is that he seems to just not care... or at least that's the image he puts out there. On the other hand though, I don't think that anyone gets to the level that he's gotten to without caring and being deeply competitive. He's got the record for green jerseys now right, winning another just puts him further in front and makes his legacy that much more permanent. What he wins the magenta and green in the same year. I think it also depends on what his sponsors say. I just can't see Bora or Specialized being happy with him sitting out the TDF.

Like you said, he is kicking himself for Rio when he choose to do the MTB race only to have GVA win the road race when Sagan can typically out sprint GVA. Sagan will definately be in for another green jersey just to check that box of the most.

Rio was a lot of punchy climbing for an Olympic road course, or at least it felt like it. As for the tour, barely any TT kilometers, mountains day two, very few sprint stages? WTF?!?!

This tours only goal seems to be neutralize Sky uh team In2us 😉 while sticking it to QuickStep. They’re gonna get a Frenchman on the top step if they have to run over everyone else with the commissars car to do it.

While GVA had a very quiet year as far as WINS go, go back and look at his results he had amazing consistency through the year, he was top 5 in so many races in is pretty amazing.
