OOS MOGA

Its not.... just OOS talk. Typical NNJ climbing but prolly a bit on the lesser side but there are rocks to deal with which tends to beat you up a bit.
There is 1 switchback climb that can hurt.

I doubt you would have issues at JH

Personally.... I cant imagine riding JH without clipless

Oh... trees tend to be tight and if you are riding on wide bars.... might want to control your speed a bit.
Agree with all this .. other than clipless. I wouldnt want to ride there on clipless at all, let alone if i was new at them. Just the fact you asked, would make me choose flats. But...im a flats 'fo life guy. Some trail there are tight for wide bars, but I was on 780's last time there, on my hardtail, and didnt leave any fingers behind.

Have you given up on clipless?
No not really I will ride clipless again but need to get some cleats and better shoes. I wasn’t a big fan, really didn’t like how my feet were attached when going down hill but gotta give it more time

Had a conversation with @rick81721 at Sourlands one time regarding riding clips on chunks and he also prefers flats.
Personally... my shins will get murdered if I was on flats and the ability to pull up really helps to get over the rocks.

But I would agree with Arnold that if you are new to clipless.... JH is not the park to practice on them.
However.... and I can be wrong but @Tim seemed pretty proficient on clips when I rode with him at HM.

No need to force it.
Its a preference thing... it works for others but it may not work for you.

I only rode 2-3 times so I want to give it a shot and also might try Shimano eventually as well. It wasn’t terrible just suspect I may prefer flats but a place like Nassau I may really like clipless

Do you have cleats? I have M530 pendals that I am not using if you want to try them out.

New shoes picked these up pretty cheap $50 from the 5.10 site sale. Hope they are as good as advertised but I also found out my Addidas soccer flats are great as wellView attachment 95534
nice find and not a weird color. I forgot to order them when they had the extra off. Really didn't need another pair extra some high tops which aren't on sale anyway

Alright. I gotta ask. How brutal is JH and why? Side question, I've been riding clipless pedals for the last 7 months or so. I've put the flats back on here and there to prevent bad habits from forming. I am fairly proficient in getting in and out of the pedals when needed and haven't tipped over in months. Should I put the flats back on for this ride? I like the control that clips give but don't want to shatter my legs on rocks...
I recommend pads. Jungle requires skill. Check out some videos online to give you an idea. One good one is Seth’s Bike Hacks Jungle Habitat

I need all new cleats which is why I haven’t ridden them also the shoes are a half size too small but not gonna get new until I am confident what I would like

for me on flats I've been focusing on putting pressure on the pedals to get more traction on the tires. But when ever I go back clips, my brain can't seem to comprehend the pushing down and clip release motion. Same reason I can't drive manual or dance. I'm guessing I just need more practice so it's more automatic instead of thinking about it.

I had no shoes to ride other than the soccer flats so had to get a pair but the soccer flats worked great

When clipped in it was really uncomfortable going down hill because I usually press my heals down and I couldn’t get comfortable hurt my calf but it might just take time

I was on flats at HM. 😛

So in all seriousness, I completely understand the logic in that if I was even asking the question I should probably ride flats. On the other hand every time I go back to flats lately I wish I was riding clips. But that's in familiar parks. I am at a point where I am ready (I think) to ride clipless nearly 100% of the time. I have had some pretty hairy moments and got unclipped in time.

I don't want to turn this into a flats vs. clips or a Shimano vs. Crank Brothers thread but @BPaze definitely try Shimano before giving up. It's a way different feel to Crank Brothers and I find it significantly easier to get into and out of SPDs vs egg beaters. Just my $.02.

I've only got 1 mountain bike and it has 780 bars so that should be interesting, too.

All in all I am really looking forward to it. I've been wanting to get up to North Jersey to see what it's all about. The only rocks I have really ridden are at Chimney Rock. I rode Port Jervis twice and High Mountain once. Just enough to whet my appetite...

Your post selling the mallets made me want to try them out as well I like to try things different and keep open minds instead of just saying I don’t like it

You'll be fine. You were beasting at HM and that's kind of a taste of what JH is like. A little less climbs, more/bigger rocks, if I remember. This will be my third time going to JH and I've been on clips on all three. Probably because I'm just used to it from my road biking days. Go with you're most confident with, which I assume will be flats.
