Patch Kit, or Spare?

Just out of curiosity...Does everyone carry a patch kit? Or do you bring along a big ass spare tube when you ride? I'm new to the Fat Bike scene and after buying a couple spares, am amazed at their size and if I'd be better off just carrying a patch kit. Not looking to go tubeless(had bad luck with it in my niners). I am also wondering how often do you flat? TIA

I carry both. A tube and a glueless patch kit. I have a couple CO2s and a Mammoth pump attached to the frame.

I wouldn't bet this to be the norm, but I flat nearly every time I ride my fat bike. Mostly it's because I do something completely retarded, like ride through a pile of glass while on the train tracks or something. I've only flatted once or twice in the woods. And only at Chimney Rock.

I flat about the same as my regular bikes (not tubeless on them, either).
I started out with just patch kits, then downhill tubes, now I just carry a full-size fat tube in my Camelbak.

New to fat riding but i used to carry tubes than went tubeless on my 29er never had a problem....right now i'm carrying a full size tube in the camel back ....

waiting for a good tubeless system....

Thanks Guys, I'll probably stick a spare in my camelback for now, am thinking about a gas tank or 1/2 frame bag, I just started looking around online and really like the options that are out there.

or you ride over trees with big ass thorns

I have never changed a surly tube on the trail in 5-6 years:hmmm:

See going slow has its advantages 😀 but I do carry a spare, 2 co2's and a pump.

Might want to double up from now on... because of your comment here, a catastrophic sidewall tear is imminent.

Does anybody ride with a lighter (non Fat Bike) tube, or is a heavier (Fat Bike) tube still the best option. I’m new to Fat Bikes and 215 LBS light.:hmmm:

I've tried this. It works, but not worth the trouble in my opinion. I used a downhill tube (26 x 2.5-2.7). You have to pump it up to around 30 psi to get it to fill the tire, and when you back it down to normal (6-7psi) pressure it doesn't feel right, like it's not filling the tire. It is good enough to get you out of the woods, though.

Other people run them all the time to save weight and swear that there's no downside. Maybe depends on particular brand? Lots of discussion on this topic on the fatbike forum on MTBR.

I just carry a big tube so I only have to change the flat once. Like Pat said, you can run a DH tube as a spare but you'll change it out at some point. A fat bike tube is only a little heavier than a DH anyways so it's not that big a deal...

I tried a 2.7-3" dh maxis tube on my CL/BFL combo and it went flat in my basement over night. The small endos and 45/50 mm rims can take them, but not the new crop of fat tires and wide rims, just asking for trouble.

Speaking of CO2, a single Big Air will inflate a 3.7 tire to around 12 psi.
(Actually it's propane, not CO2)

Wondering what everyone carries to address a flat tire on their fattys. Tubeless or not a spare tube seems appropriate plus a patch kit. What do you carry to re-inflate a Fat tire? CO2? How many and what size cartridges? The "Big Air" doesn't seem to be available at present. Do you also carry a hand pump? What one works best for the volume needed? Apoligise if this has been asked already but couldn't find it and want to avoid the long walk back to the car with the wife.

I'm now tubeless. I carry a Qtubes Light 2.4-2.7" tube, patch kit, and a small pump. A high volume one is better. It takes a bunch of strokes for sure, but not as bad as you might think since you only have to get the tire to 6-10psi. If racing (or dealing with the impatience of your riding buddies), I think 3 16g CO2's will get you there quicker.

cheers,
Pat

I have been tubeless since my first fat bike ride and always carry a patch kit and a full tube. I used to carry a Big Air can (then used it for something else and couldn't get those any more) and later 2 CO2s. Some time ago I bent a rim and my front (Bud) tire was absolutely flat in seconds. The 2 CO2s got the tire to 3 psi maybe; I was lucky my buddy had a pump (Lezyne HV). Now I carry a Lezyne pump HV and no CO2s since it's very fast to inflate and you can "refill" if you have leaks trying to seal w/ Stans, or spot another rider, etc.

For me a tube is a must. Two weeks ago I got a side rip on a brand new tire and the Stan's was coming out like water through that. If I would had a tube that would have been a long, wet, cold walk out of the woods. I'm now looking at adding some "stuff" to the Stan's so it can plug bigger holes (coarse corn meal & glitter).

I stuffed my saddle bag with a spare tube and 3co2's. Im running tubeless and that is not an excuse to bring a spare tube.

Thanks all! To start I will carry a full size tube, some CO2 catridges, and will check out the Lenzyne HV pump and a patch kit and then pare it down from there. See ya on the trails if and when my Lurch arrives!

Birzman is now making 25g Co2s...They are spectacular. 1 will fill a 5" tire from flat to around 8ish PSI, the 4" tires higher obviously...
