BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Trenton, NJ
Tuesday, January 13, 2015

Actual Average Record
Mean Temperature 26 °F 31 °F
Max Temperature 36 °F 39 °F 70 °F (1890)
Min Temperature 16 °F 23 °F -8 °F (1912)

That might be right if I was in Trenton. Right on the outskirts but right on the edge of Hopewell, which has some of the lower temps in my immediate area.

Kevin's strava includes temps - will wait for him to 'splain.
his ride was this morning, cold - my house (about 20 north of him) was sub-15. link to my weather station on first post.

i'm ok with garmin temp data - seems kinda silly that they don't resolve their temp to 10ths.

yes, my temp data was from my garmin

How accurate is Garmin temp data in the cold? I know the data in high heat is crap.
Mine always seems to read low. Like if I looked at the header on my 510 during my ride, it said 10 degrees, but my home thermometer said 15. If you look at my temp graph, it shows 10 or below, which I dont think it was that cold.

Just know that it is always darker and colder when Kevin rides. There will be no explanation.

Not for the light pattern. On an SLR, if you set aperture really high like F/22, it naturally does that. I think it has something to do with the way it's shaped like some polygon:

Interesting, I learned my thing for the day so I can veg out now.

It's garbage. I think very few places in NJ will be below 15 degrees at all this week. But really, whatever - 14, 15, 16, in the end it's not going to say a 25 degree ride was 14, so it's still just cold.

Yes and yes.

OK Everyone - Stay on the pedal (haha) - last week, after 2 days, there had been 51 rides logged!

It rained on monday, and last week had a holiday, but we are only at 17. Get in the race!

One of the peculiarities of the series scoring system, is that if there are very few participants in a week, it doesn't bury the non-participants....same is true if everyone participates at the same level (as it should be)

get out there and bury your competition, in a friendly way of course - even a couple rides give you the advantage - don't wait till the end to pick your week to "win" either.

Do it! - when have you ever returned from a ride and thought i should not have gone......

yeah, maybe remembering your anniversary would have been more important, but that is guilt talking. wasn't the ride's fault.

Walking Pat's walk?
https://www.strava.com/activities/241108007/overview

3 total
1 ride
2 parks (RV & Crush-a-monk)

I think I'm at 8 for the week.

Yes I actually spent 45 (well over) minutes in both. At the end, I questioned the sanity of this as I was walking up these brutally steep blue trail in the preserve. I know I've done this before, and said I would never do it again. But I did it again. Please make me never do this again.

Got to the power line and was going to go all the way to the municipal building as the trail goes all the way, in theory. But it's so overgrown I made it 50 feet then said screw it. Rode the power lines back, and stopped briefly to look at a piece of property that I once knew. That's a vague statement but I think I'm going to write something for Ken based on it. So I'll leave it at that.

I continue to ride this park and think, "Boy, serious potential to make some fun-ass shit here." It's a shame nobody does anything with the park. At this point, I think there are at least 4 trees down in the main trail. I imagine the Eagle Trail is almost gone now.

Saw 2 dudes/punks walking around in 2 different spots. Not sure what they were doing but the second time one of the kids gave me a peace sign. Later I smelled a campfire so maybe their friends were camping and they were trying to figure out where they hell they were supposed to go. Or maybe they were just looking for somewhere to get high. They should just sit on one of the logs in the trail. Obviously nobody from the park ever goes there.

At the end, saw a hunter with an orange getup. Kinda looked like a teammate. It's an unintended consequence of our team colors. One thing I noted was that he seemed really happy & friendly. I guess maybe that's just the right attitude when you go walking around dressed in orange with a gun slung over your shoulder.

My dad used to know, or still knows, the guy who owned this car:

ha, interesting, jp requests photos, i always go past that section near the golf course and think if anything cool could be back that way

it would all be fieldside/farmroad - the cleanup from sandy, and the install of a new set of power lines the last couple years had the access road cut in rather clean - it has grown in alot since then. I've gone the other way across 202 and into those fields along the powerlines too. the CNJ train path & pipeline to the sourlands is more fun....maybe friday. https://www.strava.com/activities/93382809

i did get to run with the bulls today, well, cows. make some noise before getting there, not to spook them, and they jog along with the bike on the other side of the fence. the pen that actually had a bull in it, gave that one an extra wide berth.

today's bike lean - this is new.

also found out they sell hunting permits for back there.

posted a few in the past,

if im not mistaken my allaire ride this morning has no point? due to the fact I did allaire yesterday.

I decided to go for another ride just to gain points. do I earn dark point on this???

1 park + 1 ride = 2pt

https://www.strava.com/activities/241137985

You always get 1 point per ride. If you ride Allaire every day, you get:

Mon: 2 points
Tue: 1 point
Wed: 1 point
...etc...

But a second ride in the day does not get you additional ride points. Only 1 "ride point" per day.

So today you get at least 1 ride point. What park is that in the link? In terms of dark point, I don't see a start time on your Strava link.

You are a BIYF winner!

the ride at allaire would count for 1 - assuming it was more than 45 minutes. but only 1 point a day for riding. i'm going to call this a road ride?? since it was less than 45 minutes on the sand... so sand is still available for tomorrow!

looking at the time of your post it probably didn't qualify for dark (45 minutes of riding after sunset)

1 for riding today
1 for road

get that sand with an up and back tomorrow! nice job.

i'll update your form info.

Intended to ride 6mr late afternoon but found the trail off of canal rd to be surprisingly muddy. Since I don't like riding in half frozen six mile grease I quickly turned around and did 18 miles on the tow path.

2 pts (1 pt ride, 1 pt new park)

Awesome! No dark point is fine. Sand is next. Thanks!

1 ride, 1 park (Camden County College)

I was happy to get a ride in, left philly @ 3:45 and didn't have lights with me. A few frozen puddles on the corners, but overall fast conditions. I saw 137,000 deer at the entrance to 1 mile. They apparently all pissed themselves at once because it smelled like it in that whole section of woods. It could have just been my gloves, but ill go with the deer theory.

speaking of deer -

Pro Tip, from today's ride.

when following 'deer paths' - the use of a water bottle in cage is discouraged.

Talking the Talk

First mtb ride of the year. Thought it would be totally lame, just a local park with paved paths, but found some dirt and even some singletrack in the woods by a creek. Have to explore more in daylight - looks like it goes further but a section was flooded with ice (which I was breaking through and this was deeper).

ride + park + dark = 3 pts
