BIYF Winter 2015 Smack Down

Props to those who rode today!

My excuses, in no particular order:
- I hit a traffic pylon thing @ WCC yesterday and my pride, hands and knee hurt. Mostly pride
- it was raining
- I worked until 3 and didnt take a bike with me
- Norm needed a head start
- it was raining AND cold and my rapha kit was at the dry cleaners
- I haven't done housework in 6 years, no better time than the present!

In all honesty, I planned today off. BIYF ALMOST got me to throw a leg over a bike when i got home from work just to score some rain points, but I thought better of it.

Tuesday
Was up earlier but was a little worried about black ice but found really none of that

Ignorance is bliss for me. On the way out I didn't see the black ice with my light. But on the ride home in the light of day I saw a good amount of black ice that I must have ridden right over. Perhaps since it was on dirt roads not as slippery?

Anyhow. 3 pts for me. +1 ride +1 park +1 dark

Managed to miss all the fun at Otto Farms this fall so took a ride over there today - Frozen solid, a little bit of ice on the back-stretch, but ridable. lots of foot prints, and horse prints to keep one out of their seat. Warmed up nicely, then froze on the ride home.

a bit over 2 hours and 23+ miles....road + Cold Laps! and a couple stream crossing.

3 points

Schuylkill River Trail and Wiss. I purposely started out down near boathouse row to get paved path miles since I figured it would be a gravel grind type of day.

I wanted to get some climbing in so the fire roads at wiss were the call after yesterday's rain. I poked in to the Lincoln side first and was surprised to see it frozen and 100% mud free.

Gateway to fun

Rittenhouse to VGI was frozen with some pretty slippery ice flows but very rideable. Turned up one of the fire road climbs at VGI to head back south, and once I got up top near the pavillion area it was just sheets of ice. Super fun to ride but slow going:

Rode Lincoln back south and onto the SRT after sunset. Nothing like a cold spin on paved path after sweating in the woods.

+1 ride, +2 SRT and Wiss, +1 Dark = 4.

1/12 - I had no desire to go out riding in the cold rain, even if was worth 100 points. So, I waited until evening and then headed to the beach for a ride in the dark. I had to be careful, since in some areas, a layer of sand was disguising ice underneath. The wind was pretty calm... it was an enjoyable ride with the view of NYC all lit up.

+1 ride
+1 new park (sand)
+1 dark

Total: 3

1/13 - Headed back to Natco Park to explore some areas I didn't get to last week. About half way through, I misjudged the depth of a stream, and my front wheel sunk right in. I was forced to put my feet down into the stream, which meant freezing cold wet feet for the rest of the ride. And now my shoes smell like a swamp.

How was your day honey? After work tandem ride with Mrs. Oleg

Very, very cold....

1ride
1road
1cold =3 points

6 points total

And the good news is you absolutely crushed it today....

on the scoring front, rides for a day are added together - so

1 ride
1 road
1 park
1 cold or dark

4 points.

apologies for not making this 100% clear.

who drives the tandem? - my wife already told me she has to have the brakes, even if she doesn't steer.....that is problematic.

Thank you for clarification.

I will take the cold point and use dark point later on in a week.

I drive, the bike, it is a total goof and a great equalizer. I never have to wait for her to catch up.😀

Builds communication in your marriage, get some exercise and have fun.🙂

Cold point? Average temp of your night ride was 31 degrees?

It feels a lot colder than that. Water bottle was frozen In less than 1hr.

If cold point is a problem, I will take the dark point, but I'm getting this f***ing point.😛

Failure to launch at 6mi today...got about 50 yards down the trail and realized all that water wasn't close to frozen yet. Rebooted and went to CR for the first time in years. A lot of sneaky ice patches along with some full on bobsled course sections.
