Power Lines Area

Aaaand another thread is lost to the quagmire. Although I think I've seen that photo too.

Word is there was a guy with a chain saw who "claimed" to be a mtber. His claim was that the place was fast and he wanted to make it faster. He got bitched at hard and walked away. So hopefully hes done.

Most likely like it was a hunter. Not a mtber

Did you catch him Fred???????

It's Log... Log

Is there something special about this log? :hmmm: Someone went through the trouble of cutting it, then moving it. The cut is relativley fresh, maybe a week or two tops. The fallen tree has been there for a long time. There is a nice amount of sprocket teeth grooves to measure it's time laying across the trail. There are other logs or small piles before and after this particular log, but they all remain in place. It was laying across the trail on the 9/26 riding towards Middlebush. On the way back to 27, maybe 20 minutes, later it was moved completely off the trail. We put it back where it belongs, notched out sprocket area and all. Today, same direction towards Middlebush, again, off the trail. Again replaced. I don't want to do 'unauthorized trail maintenance' just maintain existing trail maintenance. I'm still guessing its a hunter or hunters because it is near a field entrance path. At least that is what I hope. It's just odd that it is the only obstacle that's been deliberately and routinely tampered with.

A few guys from the shop did. The told him to cut it out. Well not literally. 😡

I was at six mile today and on the red trail someone built a bridge over one water crossing and planked up a big log crossing. The bridge is a bit sketch bc its kinda high and about 18 inches wide. The log crossing is finally rideable.

They are both constructed solidly. However i am not sure how long the bridge will last. There have been 2 others in that location and they were taken away by the raging waters. Hopefully itll hold.

The bridge is nice but after first big rain, that thing is toast. The main fault in the bridge is the 2x4 supports from the bridge to the ground, once they are knocked out, the span is too long to support itself. It is stupid to do anything but normal maintenance on that part of the red trail because you aren't susposed to ride on it. That section is hard coming from the canal but is a bridge like that really neccesary?

Well it may be the most technical section of the park but once you square the line up it really is not to difficult. I have no idea who put that bridge in and what the purpose of it happens to be.

It would be nice however to have a bridge crossing in that section. When the water level rises and it gets colder, it will not be so nice. Trick is finding away to take the steep section out. Its a bit scary descending onto a tight little bridge of that sort.

I find it mucho interesante that just as hunting season begins there are bridges being built and logs cut out. WOnder if the bridge was built for the same reason as the log removed- easy carcass draggin'?

The bridge has nothing to do with carcass dragging, it was built for mtb's. If you were dragging in that area you would just hit the edge of the fields, not go down the up and down red trail

Agreed. That would be a hell of a haul to make it out that way. Every now and then something pops up here and there. Some of it sticks...most of it ends up in the water.

In terms of logs being cut out, it is very possible that a hunter would do that, so he can roll his hunting stand in along the trail. I noticed a trail in MD that was similarly cleared (logs, debris) and a new hunting stand erected just up the trail. The new metal stands can be rolled in and erected pretty quickly.

This makes more sense. What I know of hunters (step-father and his cronies all hunted) they wouldn't go clearing spaces to drag them out. Tracking a deer can lead you all over creation. Few hunters would be so naive to think they would hit a deer and down it on the spot. Very often it's a mile before it drops dead.

I did some pretty heavy digging today near the powerlines.

Have a look and let me know what you think when you see the results.

It cleared up and I got out after all with Dirty Bert and Tommycrash. Was pretty dark when we got back by the power lines to see your handiwork but I sure enjoyed riding them. I turned around to hit the one near the tree stand...very smooth. The gulley one I couldnt see anything on approach until very late due to darkness but was still smooth and wow you moved a lot of rocks and junk out of the bottom. Flowed nicely.
Thanks!

I hope to add a bunch more stuff like that this spring.

There is really endless potential if I have the time or help.
