Fair Hill Race April 10

So who is going? I plan on riding it as the first race of the season. For anyone who has ridden it, what is the terrain and race course like? I would presume its fairly flat and not all that technical but I wanted to double check.

If anyone wants to car pool down let me know.

I'll be there!

The spring Fair Hill course is a little different than the summer race. But the trails throughout the park are similar -- pretty fast and flowy, with a few short power climbs. It is, however, quite a bit more difficult when it's wet.

Yep. It'll be a 6-7 mile lap with a good bit of open space. There's about a mile or so of fire road to start each lap. The trails are smokin fast (when they're dry) and there really are no major technical challenges. Mostly smooth and rolling with fast sweeping corners. Since the speeds are so high, it's somewhat difficult to pass on the trails, even though they're wider than most MASS courses. For the last two years, the race winners were clocking average speeds of 16+ mph. If it's dry, expect a blistering pace.

Have to eat a huge Turnpike greasy breakfast, wash it down with a jumbo soda then take the hole shot. We'll get the front of the pack at least

The start is tricky for this one... being that its so wide open, it's easy to put yourself in too much debt early in an effort to get the holeshot, or even hang on to the group depending on your class. If you're in a three lap race and can pass well, I would try to stay relaxed at the start and sit mid pack going into the woods. I'd try to be somewhat patient with your passes as people will come unglued from the opening push to the singletrack. That said, if a strong rider gets the holeshot, you may never see him again with this strategy. It's a tough call for sure. If you're on a singlespeed in a geared/open class, you have no choice in your strategy. Sit back and pick people off in the woods.

This is my first expert shot. I have no doubt I will go way into debt, crack and then explode sometime mid second lap. No doubt I will have chosen the wrong gear to run and either spin like a gerbil on meth, or grind my newly rebuilt knee into dust.

Either way, I will be loving every minute of it.

It's too far of a drive to only race 16 miles or whatever. We all know I have zero shot at winning a cat1 race at this stage but I'd like to see myself lay down 3 steady, strong lap times. Dress rehearsal for the big dance on the 17th son

Why you so worried about me?

Don't think she's "worried" about you. I bet she Just wanted to know if you were going cause that would mean maybe mandi would want to race it. I don't know about you but I like to line up with people I know...it sorta cuts the nerves down a bit

+1 on that...it's always nice to have someone to make you smile and laugh at the start line!!!!

Bshow's description of the FH trails is spot on. For N. Jersey folks that have never been there, the closest aproximation would be Stewart, or maybe a much more fun version of Lewis Morris.
As we've discussesd, Dave. You have the right gear. Going out too hard and not blowing up, well that's in your hands.
