Would a place like Ray's MTB in Ohio do well in NJ?

I was riding my road bike by some vacant warehouses and wondered if an indoor bike facility like Ray's MTB would work here in NJ. What do you think?

Funny..

..I've been wondering the same thing. I think it would...I'd argue there are probably statistically more mtn bikers in the NY/NJ area than in that area of Ohio, just by sheer size of population overall, yet folks flock to Rays from all over the country, so I would imagine rider traffic at a place like it here would be decent. If it was near a train line, you could get a decent amount of NYC traffic, too. It certainly would be a great option when trails are too soft for riding.

Im pretty sure this topic was brought up a few months ago. But I'll be damned if I can find it.

I think on top of that, many opinions suggested rent would be atrocious. But then if people will drive to Ohio, they'll surely drive to south central NJ.

There are already indoor skate parks in the central NJ area, so its quite possible with the right ideas.

My friend's family runs Shields. I don't ever think to go there tho. I need to keep that place in mind more. My riding friends hit up Hackensack SP. When my DJ is ready I will be at both

Goodvibe- I would be interested in this as well and I have experience laying out plants and converting warehouses. There is a ton of materials out there to build up features and such. It seems that there are quite a few tech types on this board that could help out with plans and formal design work. Fee structure could include memberships similar to what gyms charge.

Oh the possibilities.

NJ has too many Lawyers

I believe that's the numero uno reason it'll NEVER happen here. Lawyers aside, there would be no lack of riders hitting a place like that on the daily and I think it's be a huge success. I've been to Ray's a few zillion times and every trip was worth every penny!!

There are skate parks popping up all over the state. The lawyer excuse holds no water. If someone could get the funding and location, there's no reason it couldn't happen.

I think this idea was brought up on PhillyMTB before and there was a ton of support for it, but no one willing to fork out the money to get the ball rolling. How exactly does the idea of signing a waiver before entry work, in reference to the lawyers subject? Lawyers chime in please.

I am very good friends with the folks that worked their asses off to get the Sayreville skate park open, which I believe was one of the first concrete parks in the state open to both skaters and bmx/park bikes. I think I even put someone on the boards in touch with Sayreville officials to see what the timeline/agenda was for opening other such parks.

I agree with Norm, it's very possible, just a matter of someone getting that huge of a warehouse space and funding.

would you believe me if i said i have it on pretty good authority that someone has already started looking into this?

Anything's possible. I highly doubt this is the first time anyone's thought about doing it. The fact that nobody HAS is interesting.

Until the first kid gets hurt and some ridiculous lawsuit gets through our awful courts and shuts the place down.

Using that logic you should never leave your house.

I'm sure lots of people have thought about it. I've thought about going faster than the speed of light. BFD, really.

It's a unique combination of money, knowledge, and dedication to get something like this done. But it's always going to be a limited amount of money. If you had $15 million to throw into this project, it would happen. But something like this isn't going to get an ark full of VC funding. So the stars would have to line up just so.
