The Great Northern Migration Ride, July 26, Mahlon Dickerson

Thanks everyone, I had a great time!
Plus, no blood for me which is unusual. It was a very well led and run ride. Every group that splintered had somebody on board who knew the place and plan well.
My two favorite parts; when it started to pour and we committed to stay with it, we rode like maniacs. I felt like we were going faster and clearing things that would have slowed me down on a sunny day.
But the best was coming off that one carriage road to the uphill single track where the only way is either the off camber boulder or the verticle root. I was so stoked that I cleared the boulder, I decided to turn around and coach the guy behind me. But once I realized who was next in line, I figured Jeff Lynoski was fully cabable of finding his own way.
Would have loved to hang for lunch, maybe next time.
Also, I realized MD is within doable after work distance for me. So if any of you locals are up for it, I'd love to get to know my way around.
I love these rides. Please keep 'em going and one day I'll be able to help out.

Huge props to Ryan H.! Anyway, as soon as I started to step on it a little after Saffin's I promptly hit a rock and flatted my rear. Ryan immediately stopped to help, braved mosquitoes and God knows what else. He stayed with me the whole time, patiently holding my bike till I got rolling again. Never complained once and I never got the sense he wanted me to hurry up.

No biggie man! I knew it was going to suck to have to change the tube in mosquitoville so I didn't mind lending a hand. Glad to see you got it all back together and were crankin again.

I had a great time riding, chatting, and hugging all the married men!
You mean the married "studs" 😀

I was really glad Jeff was able to make it, the guy's schedule is ridiculous. I mentioned the group ride on Friday when we rode and he was totally into it. As we were getting ready to depart the parking lot he called me and asked which way we were going, he would chase us down....something about an alarm clock snafu. Classic Lenosky, I told him Wall to Stonegate, I'd expect to see him before bottom of Stonegate.

Huge props to Ryan H.! When I saw him in the parking lot I didn't recognize him. With his single speed Gary Fisher he definitely fits into the "sleeper" category". I kinda said to myself "this guy either has no idea what he's in for or he's gonna waste us all". I think we know which one is correct . That's when I found out who he was....all I can say is thanks man! Literally everyone who passed asked if I had everything I needed, really great camaraderie. Because of the holdup with the flat we missed 3-stone but it'll still be there next time.
That was you? I arrived at 9:57, and missed the meet & greet prior to the ride. For some reason, I expected you to be bigger :hysterica:popcorn:

That was cool that you passed the ride info along to the "other" Jeff, and even cooler that he came out. Everyone says he is a good guy, and his taking time to mix it up with us says a lot. How much of the ride did he do?

But the best was coming off that one carriage road to the uphill single track where the only way is either the off camber boulder or the verticle root.
You picked the right line 😉. That rock is my nemesis. I should be able to clear it, but I don't 😱

Yep, that was me....I get that a lot 😀

Jeff is a great guy, loves to ride and loves to see people get out on the bikes. He thoroughly enjoyed the ride yesterday, I knew he would come if he was around. He bugged out after Anrothar's alley, took the left up to the highest point then a left down the hill to the Boulder trail. Ellen bugged out at the same time, as did I. I wanted to do the whole ride, but didn't want to disappoint my son...the time check told me I needed to head out.

The stuff I've seen him do at Mahlon boggles my mind. Last fall for example climbing the Wall reroute he says that I should take the lead. I usually get bumped off a few times climbing that way. Every time I did he literally balanced on his bike and waited for me to get going again then followed me again. He did this all the way to the top. Ridiculous skills!

with that many riders, someone had to be taking photos!! c'mon, i'm jonesing for some jersey rocks here....

looks like a great ride. that's an insanely huge group.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone took any pictures. I'm generally a shutterbug at these events, but my camera stayed in my pack the entire time. Brian Snyder mentioned the same thing he brought his as well just never took it out.

How AM I

Rich,

How are you feeling? We were all pretty worried about you when we got back to the lot and Shaggz gave us the news. I hope you are well and recovering.

I'm doing well. As you probably know after bonking, Shaggz escorted me to the Weldon Rd. I was feeling pretty good. Spinning most of the way, trying to concentrate on conversation with the Shagg Master and ignoring my need for new legs. After about 1.5 mile we turned into the drive way leading to the parking lot. I stood up to peddle and give my last burst of energy.

BOOM, both legs cramped. My quads decided to find out if they could explode through my knees. The knots in both legs were fist size. So there I was lying on the street, unable to move. As I lay there, I was so grateful the Shagg Man was there to make sure no car ran me over (they'd have to get him first).

Some old timer (local) stopped to make sure I was OK. He kept telling some corny azz jokes. I guess he was trying to cheer me up. I chuckled at his jokes so not to hurt his feelings, but I thought "I'm OK now please let me suffer without you". After a few moments, the Police came by. I hoped they would take the old guy with them. But no luck. They must have known him, because they quickly made a U-turn and left, as I suffered through my physical and now mental anguish.

Well, after awhile, I massaged the protruding sacks out of my legs and climbed back on my steed. I finished the last 100 yards. Packed my stuff. Drove home and felt great. What A BEAUTIFUL DAY...

Oh, by the way thank you for asking.

Hey ya' Sean. Yeah, it is weird about the group rides at Mahlon...very few ever take pictures and those who do, take very few. I think it is the fear of catching me in the frame 😱

We can't have a group ride up there w/out your name coming up several times...especially now that we've taken to calling that rocky hell on green "Anrothar's Alley"...I think you have Ryan to thank for that 😀

Give me a 2-4 week heads up the next time your coming home and I'll get a ride together that'll rival yesterday...at least...

The guy wareing the orange "event organizer" t shirt.. His name was steve. I know shaggs name is steve. Or was that fogerson?😕😕

Great ride, thanks to Tim for putting it together! Finally got to really meet up with him even though we only live a few miles apart, definitely not the last time.

...

Huge props to Ryan H.! When I saw him in the parking lot I didn't recognize him.
...

We need to do this again, maybe a Northern Migration Fall Foliage tour? Before the leaves fall of course.....

Yeah, I think we saw each other in the parking lot and nodded to each other once w/o knowing that we knew each other 🙂confused🙂.

Ryan is the tube changing king. The first ride at MDR I did with him I saw what is, to this day, the fastest tube change I've ever seen--faster than I thought was possible (I'm not kidding). Mad skills that boy has...oh yeah, he can ride too.

A fall tour post-leaf turning and pre-leaf falling would be killer. That is my favorite time to ride up there. An epic cruiser ride...casual, lots of hanging out, maybe even bringing lunch, would be a grand idea...just enjoy the company, the beauty, and the fall aroma. When we get closer drop me a line and we'll see if we can figure out the optimum weekend and pull something together.

I feel right at home in the rocks and hills up north.

No doubt Chainsaw. You're more of a northerner than I am, for sure.

I'm doing well.

Glad to hear it man. We all of our own stories of hitting the wall hard.

I think that was Chris (oldballsbiker). I was the guy in the mtbnj jersey on the orange niner who did most of the talkin' before and after the ride 😀

Shaggz (Steve) was the dead-sexy thing (other than Mare) in the mtbnj.com full kit (matchy-matchy) who also did some pre-ride talkin', but wasn't as loud.
