Wawayanda Spring Cleaning

Stewart and Tymor a cakewalk :hmmm: Good lord I am a wuss

RC ... :drooling:

Tymor's hills aren't a walk in the park. But I struggle most with the technical stuff, which waway ringwood and of course blue have plenty of. That one rock garden at waway I've still never gotten through, though waway as a whole isn't as difficult as blue and ringwood for me. Maybe that's partly because it's shorter. Or was at least.

1st time

I'm signed up and can't wait! This will be my 1st time @ wawayanda (and 1st h2h race... I've done a 1/2 dz mass races). what tire choices would be best? I've been on the dred treds this year @ rv, clayton & allaire and love them. are they too racy for wawayanda? should I slap on the velociraptors?

thanks!

The best tires are the ones you feel most confident about as far as I am concerned. I ran Stans last year at wayway which look like bologna skins and had no problem and there were some slick sections.

Of course you are about to have a gazillion other opinions that will tell you otherwise...🙂

1st time racer

This will be my first race ever! From what I'm reading it seems like it will be a nice course. I suppose it's a good place to start and I'm looking forward to it!

Im new at this too. And not sure if I should go in the SS class or normal. any suggestions?

It is usually best to try Cat 3 first to see how you fair. You can always upgrade at the next race. Once you race Cat 2 (regular or SS), you are not allowed to drop back to Cat 1 without protest. Once a cat 2, if you race regular, you will have age brake downs. The SS class has no ages, just open age. Generally the 30-45 age groups are pretty fast.

So the white trail is still in the course? I thought it was out. We are talking about the teachie singletrack that followed the super steep little singletrack climb after the lake in the original direction, right?

I have to admit, the course as I understood it did not knock me out. There was way too much fire road, and the new singletrack felt like bunny slope stuff that requires no skill to clean. If I was wrong about the white trail being taken out, than it will be better than I thought, although I was disapointed that we don't get to ride down that switchback climb that has been tormenting us for years. I will come back and eat my words if it turns out to be more fun in a competitive context. It is my understanding that the Ringwood race is also going to be hosted by the same folks that took over this race? I sure hope that race doesn't get sanitised, especially now that there is some super sweet new singletrack there that I would love to see in the race.

Lookout is in for everyone except Cat 3. Usually everyone complains about how hard and rough the course is for the first race of the season, this year its about 3 miles longer with fire roads to soften it up a bit. We coud have made it 9 miles of bike and body smashing rock gardens, but how many would like that? Tombstone is just sweet soft single track, nothing more.

Don't doubt the Black Bear crew. Jeff and the crew will put on a good race no doubt. As for the new singletrack that's been cut, I wouldn't plan on seeing that in the race this year, or in the next 5 years. That's too nice to throw 300+ people on while looking for passing lanes and killing the amazing work that's been done.

Yes. When you get to the top of that steep climb the race will be coming from the right and making a hard right turn to go back to the fire road. It won't be coming down that steep hill to go by the lake.

Blue Mountain is definitely body smashing.

I rode the race course last Saturday and I'm psyched. Black Bear always runs a great race!!! I can't wait 😀

You would. 😀

Brah- it ain't Waway without the rocks😀. It was changed up a bit, same course= boring. There's tons more of the park than what you've been on. If its mostly single track :cry:no place to pass, mostly fire road :cry:its a roadies course. Plus the problem of sending a pack of guys into a tight rock garden and one of the guys in the front face plants. We all saw the vid of last years race going over the bridge funny as hell unless you were the guy that got shoved into the drink.
