Drones overhead tonight (many)

I live very near the Sourland Mtn Preserve. Tonight (11/30/24), My neighbor called me to say he saw a huge drone fly past his house. I looked out and while we were on the phone together we both saw at least a 1/2 dozen+ large drones hovering and then moving slowly off into the woods.

The strange thing here is that behind our houses there is very little to see as it is open space and no homes are back there. All the drones had flashing lights and that alone makes me believe that these are recreational users vs some more nefarious use.

This article describe exactly what we both saw:

Recreation drones are usually quad copters they will sound like a beehive and have way less range than a fixed wing drone. They can operate 5 to 45 minutes depending on the size. A fixed wing drone will sound like a plane or be less buzzy, they can fly hours. No recreational drone flyers are using fixed wings of this magnitude. If it's quad copters they are operating very locally.

Get used to it, the air will be so crowded in 10 years it will be annoying.

They were spotted in Parsippany yesterday and Other parts of Morris county too today.

This this was on Tues 11/19....middle of the night a helicopter was hovering over my house for a good 5 min......

Which is this AW139...holy hell, my house was rattling.

Anyway, looking at the track it flew, it was doing laps inside of Picatinny which is ~1 mile or so from my house.

So they were apparently following the drones around. haven't seen any more lately. I guess i'd be a little surprised if a place like Picatinny didn't have some kind of counter UAS system....but maybe they dont. They certainly would never make it public.

Im guessing its rich kids making tick tok videos.

Its interesting to see where all of this nets out in 5-10 years as these become more common and privacy and trespassing come into play. I think that package delivery will be via drone at some point, but people will also find creative ways to use these for nefarious purposes. Up in VT a few years back we were being harassed by someone playing with a drone. It would hover over the deck watching us have dinner or while hanging outside. Neighbors reported the same thing happening with them. Eventually that drone ended up in small pieces.

friend reported seeing 3-4 of them in the Roxbury area last night and said it was very loud and distinct compared to helicopter or plane flying past.

Surprised also if they were hovering around a military property that they dont have a way to immobilize them. Then again they cant just shoot them down and risk crashing into property and people on the ground I guess.

I had one of those odd helicopter hovers in my neighborhood last week too, wonder if it was the same thing?

encroaching on a military isntallation is a great way to attract the kind of attention the operators likely DONT want.

"investigating" sure
if they were crossing into picattiny airspace, they actually are.

Friend saw them last night in ringwood by the reservoirs. Told her this is the "new normal" 😂

I called the local police and the cop called me after not getting out of his car and doing an uninspiring search.

He asked if I had a shotgun, and said that he woudl just shoot them down if it were him. I found this advice to be foolish at best.

I did make a report here: https://www.njohsp.gov/threat-landscape/report-suspicious-activity

to me anyway......if you are doing this....You are looking for attention....You are the same people who make crop circles, etc.
