Car issue and suggestions needed

Kia is just going to continue to blow you off.
interior door panel has to come off, no other way to access for repair and figuring it out. Probably have to remove a speaker so you can get into the door cavity along that edge. There will be videos on how to get the panel off for your vehicle. If a body shop had it off once it will be a little easier this time. As for the door check you can probably google and find "2021 Kia Telluride door Check assembly diagram" and start to find things both as parts and a view of perhaps how it is set. If you haven't pulled a door panel off its a pain in the ass but not terrible. I've pulled off a number of them, granted been a while (thankfully). If not your thing perhaps a friend you can bribe with beer. I'm sure you could get just about any repair shop to do it but it will be like a $50 part that you'll get hit for like $400 to fix.

Did the body shop give you a quote or indication of what’s needed?

They did not give me a quote. From what I was told originally it looks like I would need a whole new door shell, then transfer everything over to that door. And then paint it to match. Sounds pretty pricey, which is why they’re giving me the cold shoulder.

No, it’s not just the door checker. That is not the problem. It’s where it mounts to on the inside of the door shell that’s broken. I was given the impression that the mount is not fixable, and an entire new door shell will need to be ordered painted and replaced.

know any adventurous friends with a welder and a strong affinity for beer?

This should be repairable without replacing the door, even if it’s the mounting plate or welds that broke. It may leave visible evidence of the repair but it will only be seen when the door is open.

Go to a local hot rod shop, they won’t be afraid of a small bit of fab and weld.

Ouch. Thats extra shitty.

Sorry man.

It sounds like an emotional decision rather than a financial. Keep pressing those MFers.

It sucks but if money is no concern then got for it! 🙂

I installed longer door checks on my Honda rear doors, and was able to do so through the speaker hole.

I would consider the possibility of through-bolting the door checks through the door frame/shell. Nice, clean exposed bolt heads and no one would even know.

This whole issue just burns a bit more after replacing a backup camera that was fouling the whole electronic system just after the warranty was up and spending $1900 to fix that. I’m getting close to my limit and trading it in and getting something else. Been looking at some GMC sierras as a possible replacement.

Be careful what you wish for. My last Suburban needed a new engine at 105k miles. Less than a month later the transmission went.

And my experience with sierras and their wax dipped frame vs ecoat paint, wheel bearing failures x3 and a few other significant corrosion issues were less that optimal. Perhaps they improved since my 2007 but i wont go back as long as they wax dip. My 2019 ram has been good...enough...@ 100k. Wont say ive had no issues. Good enough.

wheel bearings are wear items, not sure how many miles you had when they went out, but yea . . . .

that said my 17 RAM has been phenomenal with only 1 repair (a/c bearing oddly enough), that said you DID buy the first model year of the new generation so . . . .

Was gonna say, trade it in and run away but I’m anti-American cars unless it has a v8 and a clutch

i was also thinking time to trade it in and make it someone elses problem, but in 4 years how many miles can you realistically have on it? you probably still have plenty of that powertrain warranty (assuming they are still doing 100k for that).

Im not a huge GM fan but its gonna be 1000000 times better than anything made by kia

I loved my Sierra until 95k miles. It was done. I traded it in almost a year ago and it still hasn't sold to a person. 3 different dealers tho
