The north east still needs a lot more but fingers crossed for this to come into play:
Great terrain at Mad River, personally I would put it above Jay. But Stowe, man it’s special. I’ve never hiked to the top of Mansfield to ski, but all those woods between the quad and gondola, when it has snow, almost as good as tree skiing out west, ALMOST. Love Smuggs, have only skied there about 5 days, because the lifts suck, but the terrain is awesome. Sugarbush is great also, heading there on Monday. KIllini ton is pretty awesome also.I guess I'm biased, but I did spend every winter weekend of my life in Vermont from age 8 to 12 before moving to Utah...then alot more when I moved back...my vote... Mad river, then Jay (better terrain but so far away), smuggs, Sugarbush then I guess stowe (bc of the Mansfield hike) then Killington...
Mad river is far and away my favorite...I LOVE gnarly and mad river... While it doesn't have the steeps of Utah, the lack of 100+ inch base means you have rocks, trees and all kinds of things to deal with... What a fun place. And it's not circus Killington and stowe are
There is this thing about the shitty lifts at smuggs and mad river... And yes they are slow as balls... And at mad river.. Ya it's a LONG ride... But God do they lessen the mountain traffic.... I mean I think the terrain at stowe and smuggs were fairily comparable outside of the hike to Mansfield... Which is great if there is good snow... But to me stowe is such a zoo every time I go there... And the prices are outrageous... Like I know Pico is not Killington, but its alot quieter, way cheaper and still has some good terrainGreat terrain at Mad River, personally I would put it above Jay. But Stowe, man it’s special. Bottom line, I pretty much agree with your assessment. Not that you were looking for my approval.
no doubt, the terrain at smuggs is awesome. I usually only ski mid week, non holiday, so I haven’t had the zoo experience at Stowe that you are talking about. But I’ve only skied smuggs on a weekend, and those lines suck. I mean really suck. Like 25-40 minutes suck. But, you are totlally on point with the price of Stowe, holy shit, it’s insane, I’m pretty sure that’s what kept me away for so long. I had been buying the epic pass since it came out, when Stowe was added I started going back, and it was actually better than I remembered. My kids are 13 and 16, they learned to ski at Pico, and I have had some great powder days there, but it really isn’t even in the same conversation as the other places you’ve referenced. That being said, I’m so old, I could do soft blue runs at Pico all day long. There is this thing about the shitty lifts at smuggs and mad river... And yes they are slow as balls... And at mad river.. Pico is central VT’s best kept secret in plain sight. Never any lines, even on weekends. Everyone just drives by on way to Killington. By the time they get there I’ve already gotten 3 runs in. Plus, much le$$ to pay. Plus plus the waffle shack 😋no doubt, the terrain at smuggs is awesome. No doubt, in plain sight! It’s right in front of you. My wife and I skied there on closing day once, I think it was 2000,2002? Somewhere around there, it was an incredible snow year, they got about 7-8 feet in March. We were one of 7 or 8 cars in the lot. Mountain was 100% open. I have very fond memories of Pico. So soft!!! It also has some challenging terrain, the woods off KA demand attention, as well as a lot of stuff on that side of the mountain.Pico is central VT’s best kept secret in plain sight. Stoked you got some goods. My wife and I were supposed to be there last weekend when Stowe was getting that storm. But something came up at home. We are getting back there in February and fingers crossed the base will stay and new material will fall on top! (I still need to get my back in better shape after spraining it from ice hockey injuries accumulating the past few weeks 🙁 )Skied sugarbush on Tuesday-Wednesday. Wow, it was incredible. Soft! Soft! We didn’t get the fresh powder from the storm over the weekend on Tuesday, but the skiing was excellent. No ice at all. The base was amazing. On Wednesday, we woke up to about 6-9”, what a great way to start your day. My legs were fried from the powder. Great day.
