The terrain is VASTLY better than it was in the 90s when I lived in PC...Its like a different mountain now. I had two friends in HS whose moms both worked at the mountain...we could ski there and eat there for free and we still never wanted to go bc it was boring lol....but I dont feel that way anymore...They really added some nice stuff....and I agree, its easy to get into the fun stuff without too much hiking. Its not the intense kind of terrain at snowbird persay, but still really good. And skiing in the aspens with my 6 year old was an absolute blast.
No doubt. some of the best tree skiing around. My son almost ran over an Ermine in the triangle trees 2 years ago. And you‘re right, snowbird has some serious terrain, although those Daly chutes can make anybody pucker a little!

Thanks for sharing. Big companies want to take away small perks from their Ski Patrols and now they pay the price. Haven't skiid at Hunter in 20 years anyway. Once I figured out 2 more hours gets me to superior Vermont resorts - game over.

Are you still up there at Killington? Trail count has been on the rise.

Fingers crossed for a decent day tomorrow, appears they opened "5" additional trails.
Interested to see how crowded things will be with it being a "red" day.

So I’m trying to decide on finding a used ski setup or rent. My daughter wants to spend more time on skis this year which is great. I snowboard and have that gear covered. However I can’t show her anything with the board, lines and speed are different, etc.

Be a lot easier to ski, but I don’t want to invest a lot as I’d rather ride...I think. When I rented whatever the place had last year the ski shape advances blew my mind. So much better. I don’t want to buy used and be way out of date but there’s always deals to be had on CL.
Thoughts?
Thx.

You’ll be fine if you buy used. Even skis that are 5 years old are light years better than skis 15-20 years ago. And, they pretty much last forever. I have used eBay a few times and never had a problem. No idea how you would buy used ski boots, my feet are too finicky.

Yeah, boots have been hard to find. Especially since the tri state area seems to have an average foot size of 6-7.5, which seems statistically impossible. I‘ve seen a couple decent ski offers but until I have boots kinda blue sky.
Thanks for the input!

My son started skiing at 5 and I boarded alongside him every season. He followed me the first few seasons but then began to find his own way down. He tried snowboarding at 8 and caught on quick but the confidence and independence he had gained on skis by not following my lines and doing his own thing kept him on skis. He’s now 23 and into backcountry out west. My point is that in my experience giving your kid a chance to be different from Dad could actually help him/her learn in a different way. It also savesyou some $$$ 😉

What size boot are you looking for?

Interesting. I’ll think about that. She hasn’t really complained about anything I just thought it might help. Hmm.

Are there any decent ski shops near you? Asking someone there if they have old demo/stock items in storage that would fit the budget and size might be worth it.

Any ski swap groups on FB that you could post a wanted ad?

Just want to throw out that boots are the most important part of the equation. Used boots might get you started, but I can guarantee they won't be the right boots. If you asked this question on a ski forum heads would explode. No different than someone asking here "which is the best fork to put on my Huffy because I want to race DH at Mountain Creek this year?"

When I rented last year the boots fit sloppy but I was so impressed with the skis it made up for it. For some idiotic reason my old boots were tiny and I wore them for years. But yeah, wearing something made of rigid plastic all day that doesn't fit right won't be much fun.

Totally agree. Go to a good shop and get fitted for boots. Not sure how possible that is right now, but it makes such a huge difference. I started skiing a bit late in life, around age 30, and getting boots that fit properly made such a difference in my learning curve. At that time I went to Heino's, which is no longer in business, but the main guy there Greg was/is(?) at Ski Barn.

On a semi-related note, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for ski instruction. At this point it would be next season. I really enjoy skiing but I'm kind of stuck at a low intermediate level, which is down to probably some limitations in the instruction that I've had (taught by a friend who grew up ski racing but isn't an instructor) and a lack of days on the snow. Ideally I want to do something like a week long camp type of thing focused more on kind of a modern GS type of style, although I get that there are fundamentals that run across different styles. I say that mainly because I had a lesson at Stratton where the instructor basically wanted me to ski with my ankles touching which just isn't what I'm looking for. Seems like it would be easy if I were, say 10 years old, but haven't found much out there for a 40 year old!
