Ramblings from Moe Mountain

Did you check out the map after your ride? The yellow trail is a little tricky in that area especially if your not familiar with the trails. There are a tremendous amount of trails in and around Mahlon. Kudos for going out and exploring. Sometimes those "adventures" are the best rides.
Yeah, I did download the map and check it against my ride. I was just buggin' out at the time, seeing Yellow going every which way. I could picture myself going in circles on Yellow. "with no arrows of direction under my feet" an old quote.

Well I’ve been out of commission since Monday so no Bikes or Hikes for three days, but today I got out and rode. Two and a half miles, big deal! It was great to get riding again, but it was a real effort. About three to four inches of wet heavy slush and snow. I lowered my tire pressure ‘till the sidewalls rippled and it was better, but there was NO flotation. The rule was don’t veer to the left and don’t veer to the right, straight ahead or down you go. Washout. Even with studded Dillinger 5 and studded Bud I could spin the tires if I powered. It was still kind of fun though. If I could have gone out in the morning I would have been good, but this was mid afternoon. I took a photo of the parking lot by the lake, and the trails were in the same poor condition. I saw no other bike tracks today.

Had a great ride today! Not like two days ago, I got out early, 7 AM and 31° and frozen. The trails were good, except for the damn hikers that made boot holes to deal with making the ride lumpy and bumpy. I'd ride the edge as much as I could and it was great. Got to the double track and it was really rough from 4 WD trucks making ruts and making a difficult ride, still fun, just really having to pay attention where you ride without getting thrown off by the ruts. Great ice everywhere today. I was running 3 PSI in the tires and found the front was a little too soft and uncontrollable, so I stopped to pump it up a pound or two. Now the problem. The valve stem came out with the pump and I quickly lost my air, damn, I hate when that happens! Got the stem out of the pump and reinstalled it in the valve and pumped again. Fifty five pumps and I quit and carefully removed the pump hose using my fingernail to try and keep the stem in. It worked. Now I was at about 5 PSI and happy. I thought of the Iditarod people doing this at 20 below. I had a great rest of the ride sticking to snow banks along the road and fresh snow along the sides of the trails and the hard icy patches. Seven miles and a happy biker!

I can't read the markings, was that the 2XL tire?

January 29th.
Motorcycle Hill climbs today in Monticello, NY. I got there around 9:30 AM with my friend Ed. I went for a ride around to see the lay of the land. It looked like it was going to be a great day. Lots of racers getting ready. This place is called Holliday Mountain Fun Park. For $40 you get to bring whatever you want and ride it around, snow mobiles, motorcycles, quads, bikes. Plus it has family skiing and a crappy lodge with fast food. So I rode my bike up to the lodge and around the snow bank to underneath the chair lift and back down to the parking area and then up to a amusement park area, now closed, but a nice ride in the ice covered snow. Then I went off and rode alongside the river just to see where it went. There were small picnic areas along the river and some small trails just in and back out to the road. Saw some cook ducks and geese on the river. I only did about six miles and then got back to the races. Spent the rest of the day watching the hill climbs and hanging out with friends. Pretty free as the rules went, there weren’t any. Spectators and racers were drinking beer and smoking funny stuff. Really funny to see a racer cuing up with a bottle of beer and chugging it just before going up the hill. Rules might change by next year, this was the first year for this event. All in all a great day out. Some photos.

I only rode 3.5 miles this afternoon in the snow in Wawayanda.
We got about 3 inches of fresh snow, but remember, there is ice hiding below!
The trails were difficult to ride because of the hikers leaving behind their two to
three inch deep footprints. Get thirty hikers and you have a washboard mess as
it refroze. As much as I tried to ride the outsides of the trails, so did the hikers.
Then I hit the icy underneath trails and went down like a sack of s@#!”. Damn,
ya go fast and hard, studs. or no studs, I don’t think it mattered today. Most
likely because with NO snow on the ice, you see it and prepare. When you don’t
see it, it’s a total surprise. It was still a great afternoon ride for only 3.5 miles, but
that’s all I had in me today.

For future reference, leave the bike in the position where it ended up after the crash for the pic. Bonus pts for discernible body impact image!

Nice ride this morning, I rode the Laurel Trail going over the icy spot that threw me down last week. Everything is still nice and snowy and frozen, great riding conditions throughout the park. I saw a rare site as I came back to the furnace area, two Fatbikers riding together making a great rumble down the trail and up towards Double Pond trail. Then I rode up to the lake and saw the Russian ice fisherman out on the lake. I rode out to them and did a little ride around. They thought it was great fun to see me out there and they thanked me for stopping by to say hello. I told them that bikers have an old saying. “Never trust an Ice Fisherman”. They had a good laugh and said don’t go over that way. They were right, it is open water. Then it was back down the Iron Mountain trail and back to the car, I was done. On another note, I tried using my goggles today again and they never work for me. They always fog up within the first 1/2 mile. I know people use them, but I haven’t found the answer yet. I’ve got my Thermal Balaclava with Heat Exchanger that advertises “wont fog goggles”, but NG.

Then a quick ride to the bar to meet with the motorcycle boys at noon.
