2/7- surprised to find dirt!!

Left the house intending to ride the roads of navesink. Passing huber I was surprised to see the trails pretty much clear of snow.

Trails were nice and frozen in hartshorne and huber and fun to ride on a "skinny" mtb

Got in and out before the thaw.

Some sections are gonna get sloppy later.

2 hrs. 20 miles

Today seems to be try to find some dirt day. Original plan was to hit Stephen's with Rob but he had to bail, so went it alone. Another solo first time ever park (39 more parks to go). On the drive up GPS took me up Schooley mountain road - looks like a good climb that I'd like to try on the road bike - is there ever a time with little traffic there tho? Anywho, parked in what I guess is the main lot for Stephen's - no one there except for a ranger. Hit the trail next to the bathrooms and off I went. Like Matty said, no mud anywhere but there was a lot of frost heave which made it slow going and traction on climbs was really tough. Other parts of the trail still had snow (non-magic) so that was slow going as well. Going down a steep switchback that was snow covered was the only butt clenching moment - Fred Flintstone brakes saved the day as I almost skidded off at one turn which woulda been a steep tumble down. There was a ridiculous climb at the beginning that due to poor traction I ended up hiking most of it - oddly enough I got a KOM! At the top I found this - pretty impressive that someone rode this thing up - at least the way I came:

Looks like I didn't go far enough northeast but almost all the trails I saw were well marked - finally found an unmarked trail and followed that. It turned into a weird pink marked trail that went down the middle of a power line clearing. At the end, I popped out onto a dirt road across from a huge gravel mine. I followed that road for a bit looking for a trail back into the park. Found a shooting range:

Mostly 12 gauge shells - I put one on the saddle but it's hard to see. Turned around on the dirt road and found a trail back into the park. Followed a white trail for awhile, then red/white, which took me to a shelter and playground. Turned out I was pretty close to where I parked so did another short loop. Back at the lot, saw a road/trail behind the ranger station and wanted to get to 2 hrs moving so went up that - it kept going and going, finally had enough, turned around and bombed down to the lot. Finis.

Ate a Kind bar by the creek

went up zion again today - felt better than last week - although someone pedalled by and put 100M on me in about 3 minutes during the climb....
couple minutes behind my pr. but i'm gunnin' for it by july!

as an aside, this temp really messed with me. again, want my knees covered so wore the PI tights. had bike shorts underneath. made the mistake of
putting the shoe covers on, instead of just the toes. And didn't take the sleeves off the windbreaker (i like wearing it, cause neon yellow) - hands were hot,
butt was sweaty, head was cooking! gotta remember to dial it back.

Went to Allaire. Walked up the orange trail a bit but decided elsewhere would be better. It was either ice or mud. I knew The Hubby wouldn’t appreciate the ice very much, and I am not riding on muddy trails. So I asked The Hubby if he wanted to hop over to Manasquan Reservoir or just hit the paved path near Allaire. He opted for the paved path/ Ir was a good choice, we had a fun time. There was enough snow next to the path for me to ride and play in for extra smiles.

And we even explored a short trail in the woods and made first tracks, isn’t that the goal of every snow ride

Oh no, not a hill!

First ride of the day was just a leisurely road ride. Nothing spectacular. But it felt good to be out early and riding.
Then in the afternoon The Hubby and I took a spin in some local woods. Felt great to be out on dirt trails. Just enough snow on the trails to make it extra fun and interesting. Its fun slipping and sliding here and there. It was especially fun watching The Hubby just kinda “go with it” when he would slide. I think he’s finally beginning to appreciate snow riding. Saw a herd of deer numbering about 15.

D&L jawn. that hurt. for all kinds of reasons.

i made the stupid decision of loading my bladder onto the bike before jim drove us to the race, so all that froze before we even rolled out and it stayed that way until i got to the turnaround. if it wasnt for utah and the bottle handup i wouldve been cooked at mile 30 and needed rescue. 2 hrs in the snow started to slow down and be frozen footsteps which just absolutely jackhammered my taint all day, which sucked a lot of energy out of me. then the mud. so much mud.

i blasted thru the the bikewash as norm calls it right at the beginning, which ended up freezing my rear caliper, and making my deraileur "meh" for a good 2o miles, then my valve stem froze when i tried to let out some air. i couldnt close it back down so i had a slow leak for like 5 shitty snow miles and had to nurse it with a co2

whole way back i hung out with norm which was good, cuz i was hurtin and i wouldve gone a lot slower if i was out there alone
@thegock i mightve touched your butt when 3 of us stalled out on a snow dune. no homo

thanks for the water handup (life saver!) and barleywine john, thanks for the couch and food and ride and brohangs jim, thanks for the company norm

if anybody knows that recipe for that veg chili the ladies had at the turnaround, i need it.
