That's a nice saw but too big to fit in my camobak. I like folding saws - I had a good one but lost/left it somewhere on a TM. Any recos for a good folding saw?

my buddy swears by a 9" bahco, ive seen it in action and its no slouch on green wood or hard dead wood alike

i think im gonna have to acquire one soon

First rocks on the 27.5+ horsethief. Hit sourlands and really impressed, I counted 10 rock gardens/rock over sections that I cleaned for the first time. Almost got this one too - one of my nemeses there, but got off trail and choked. Second time around I hit a rock wrong and went OTB. Will get it this year tho

Bottom of the pipeline is a mess so didn't venture all the way down but a partial bombing run showed this thing can fly, too many hikers to let it completely rip but a PR is certain to come.

Back on top did a little TM with my shit saw - had to recruit the help of an asian family hiking to finish it off. That huge down tree in the background is directly on a fun 3 rock whoop-de-doo that is unfortunately no more

It's weird, I've gone from not liking camelback's, to wearing a small one, to a bigger one, to a big camo one, to not liking them again. Full circle.

One downside to a larger capacity camelbak - more crap can fit. I weighed mine this morning pre-ride with tools, phone, water and it's almost 8 lbs! Gotta find some ultralight titanium clippers and saw

Can't you call Parks dept. to cut it up? Or NYNJ trail conference? That's what we're supposed to do here up North.

Now that's a rock garden! Looks like what I encountered on Sitting Bear in WayWay.
I hear the trick is "speed is your friend"! Now all I need is the balls to follow through!

We do trail maintenance with Jorba and somerset county park rangers. Only the ranger can run a saw. Will see if this is deemed salvageable, maybe.

On rock gardens yes I was told the same thing, speed and keep pedaling gets you thru and it's true. But fails are more painful!

Went for a nice hike with my wife earlier today, so after we got back I decided I'd go out for an hour. I grabbed an MTB though, since I figured I'd find me some dirt somewhere. I ended up going and poking around in the local abandoned quarry, riding the RR tracks, some local MX dirt and a little bit of road for good measure. Beautiful day to be outdoors!

Decided to do a test run of what HoH might be like on SS. Did a ride from home to FarHills then 70 miles of the NJ Fondo route and back.

The climb at Black River Road completely sucked as did Hoffmans Crossing much later.

Awesome day for a big ride.

Some gravel along the way, and a short break at the border of Pennsyltucky.

A Very Good Day
I had to work again this morning. While I am not keen on working on my days off, the extra money is good for getting more cycling socks or coffee mugs
Plus there was pizza so maybe it was worth it.

Just the usual commute. I am enjoying the saddle bag, I think. While I feel like it makes the bike feel heavier, (and specifically in the rear end) I like not having to take a back pack off/on to get something or change a layer if needed. I dressed way too light this morning. On the way in I was fine, but by the time I had to go home it was chillier out. I neglected to bring an extra layer so I didn’t do a long ride home. Considering how lethargic I had been feeling the past couple days, and knowing we were heading to Jungle today, a slow paced short ride home was in order anyway,

What is it with joggers who run down the double yellow line anyway?

I take the Family to the Zoo
The Hubby had been wanting to explore the paved sections at Jungle. He’s not really into rocks and such so didn’t enjoy those trails the last time we went, but he was really into exploring the paved sections. And riding the parking lot. He really likes the parking lot. Its one of the few places when we get done The Hubby actually looks at his Strava to see if he went faster than me. Its such a pretty area to ride in so we decided to invite some family.

Jason, Lindsey, and Lily accompanied us, and they invited some friends George and Alex. The weather was perfect, the company was exceptional, and I brought my Beloved Beast. It was bound to be a good day.

Jason led. Sometimes this is bad for me. He likes the challenge of climbing. But he also loves downhill so that’s a plus for me as I try to keep up with him. He is such a great riding partner. He is very good, but never makes you feel bad for not being as good. Of course we start out by going UP the road towards The Lot. Blah. Half way up Lindsey, The Hubby and I feel like this is nonsense and walk part of the way. I had to pee anyway so it was a good excuse.

We enter the park through The Tunnel. The Hubby of course has to make monster sounds and then yell out “Godzilla” as he goes through. I just yell out “weeeeeeee.”
P3127240.JPG

Then it’s a turn and another long climb. Sometimes I would like to smack Jason. Isnt there a park that has all downhill? Well I put my big girl panties on and dealt with it. For every up there is a down and we all know that’s what I live for.

So far The Family is liking The Zoo but we hadn’t seen many animals yet. Then we come to this Big Rock. Jason decides he just had to ride up it. I am like “why?” is this one of these “because its there” things?
Rock Fail
JH Jason.jpg

Of course Lily makes it, but no fair, she has 4 wheel drive
JH Lily and Jason.jpg

This is Lily. She is my hero. She was the one she helped me convince The Hubby we should get a doggie.
JH Lily.jpg

We finally arrive at one of the animal pens and I sit and watch while everyone follows Jason in to do loops in the cage. I am snickering because they all are complaining about the thorns (which were sorta purplish by the way, wish I had taken a photo of those). They all follow him around TWICE. Humans are definitely prey/herd animals. Well, some of us anyway. Did you notice I did not follow them?

P3127237.JPG

We finally get to a large downhill. Glorious! Well worth the climb up. The Hubby had a problem focusing and managing the gentle swoopy turns and almost hit the guard rail. As I wiz by I shout out “look through the turns not the guard rail.” He is complaining about his rotors being mad hot and has to touch them to see how hot “ouch!” Ummm yeah.

We all stop and chatter a bit about how great the downhill was. But Lindsey, The Hubby, and I are all for some sort of lift service to go up the hills.

We also found where the government is breeding space alien life forms. We left before we accidentally found the space ship building center too. That would mean big trouble. Here is the nesting area:
P3127239.JPG

Next is another big climb. Even Jason and George stop about half way up for a breather. I am about 20 feet behind them and when I see them stop I am determined to get past them. As I pass, George yells out “do it girl” and I reply “ I just have to make it further up than you guys.” But as I pass I decide I must make it all the way. As I feel like I am going to give up, I yell out “someone start cheering me on!” and Jason and George yell out words of encouragement and I focus on their voices and keeping my breathing under control and……I MADE IT! I was stoked to actually made it up without stopping.

At one point a lady jogger passed us. Jason grabs Lily and tells the jogger “its ok, she is friendly, she wont bite.” And I say “yeah but watch out for me, I bite.” the jogger responds with “that’s ok, as long as you make it hurt.” Good thing The Hubby isn’t a jealous guy.

We explore some more and we decide we have to take a quick stop at our vehicles. There is a small uphill at the gate and we decide to wait for Jason and The Hubby as they are the ones who really needed to visit our vehicles. But as we are waiting, I decide to see if I can make it up the hill. Those of you that have ridden with me should be surprised by that. I actually CHOSE to go UP just to see if I could. Proof Miracles do happen.

We come to an animal pen and of course everyone has to go over to admire it.
“What are you all looking at?”
P3127243.JPG

By now a few us are feeling some burn in our legs and have had enough of ups, but arent really ready to quit, so we wander around on the more flattish paths and visit the otter pen. We got to see a couple otters too!

We start off on another path that is going down sorta, but it has a huge rocky washout right in the middle.

I have to continue in the next post, apparently I have too many photos

Part 2
So some of us ride the rocks, some of us walk the rocks. The Hubby and I find our future home, we want to live here:
P3127244.JPG

(sorry the photo is washed out a little, I tried to get the sun to respond to my commands like Joshua, but no dice.)

We come to the train tracks and of course the fellas want to go around the tracks and make little choo choo train sounds, ok maybe not. But I wasn’t into the train tracks. I wanted to ride down the little stairs. Its only a couple steps, but figured it would entertain me while the fellas go in circles. When I yelled out I was doing the stairs, I realized everyone had decided to follow me! I rode down, The Hubby rode down, then Lindsey rode down! I was so proud of her. I knew she was a little nervous but she did it!
Wish I had taken a photo of that but instead got this, not sure what I was doing
P3127246.JPG

Of course we finish off with a bomb down the parking lot. Much to The Hubby’s delight. We didn’t race though. I don’t know why but he took off before anyone else was ready. And then we went one at a time. When we get back to the van he is already pulling out his phone to check his Strava! He is disappointed because the information is limited and wont give his maximum speed. REALLY? Oh my God, you will have to wait till you get home to check!
I may have mentioned before, his phone isn’t as accurate as my Garmin. It routinely shows he rode faster/longer than me. It did in this case too. But it also showed he went up “otter slide” today which we did not. He placed well on it too, which he wouldn’t. So I am not giving him kudos for going faster than me, cause he didn’t.

It was definitely a good ride. I enjoyed riding the paved stuff there way more than the rocky trails. Good work out on the climbs and fast down hills. Will definitely do it again. It was challenging enough to keep me and Jason interested, but easy enough for Lindsey and The Hubby to enjoy themselves. I think George and Alex had a good time too. There was lots of smiles all around.

The day was finished off nicely with a yummy dinner:

That’s right @Mumonkan I had cookies for dinner!

But this following shot is for @stb222 because he thinks this one small photo will tell the story of our ride better than all the previous stuff:
